It may not fit my body clock but we are winning in these very late night games, so I am nervous about a 5:05pm start Sunday. But, it’s better than the 2pm game. This is win and move on or lose and go home time of year. So you don’t over-analyze the rear view mirror, you just celebrate success and prepare for the next opponent. Nothing in college basketball is bigger than UConn vs Duke from my perspective.

So now I will overanalyze the past game lol.

Our two star seniors combined for 55% of our points (37/67)and while our 19 point lead was chopped away at by a good team, we were strong enough mentally and emotionally to hold things together enough.

Karaban is the gift that keeps giving and so happy he’s improving his draft position even after so many years. He shot 50%, including 37.5% on threes and 2-2 FTs for 17 points. Led the team in rebounds (7), and had 3 assists and 2 blocks. Alex had a do what it takes to win type game.

Our other key senior Reed had 20 points with 50% shooting. But, what was really satisfying was his 2 made foul shots to win the game. He did not look like a 55% FT shooter and it was great to see all his hard work improving what he hasn’t done well pay off. Overall he has been a 75% FT shooter (15-20) in the three NCAA Tournament games, which puts a lot of pressure on our opponents. When you foul Taris now, you likely pay a price. While the high hedge scheme positioning hurt his rebounding (only 4 on defense) he played smart enough not to let Breeding eliminate him from the game (4 fouls). Reed also had 4 assists and zero turnovers against a tough team.

Our 43% to 25% 3pt% advantage was key even though some came early. That and higher 3 volume gave us a 15 point advantage from 3 in a 4 point win.

In a game in which we were out rebounded by 9 (39 to 30) that was key. Rebounding work starts before the shot goes up by being in defensive/rebounding position something Geno/Calhoun’s teams do/did well. The high hedge makes that sometimes difficult, despite our toughness and there was a MSU 13-6 offensive rebounding advantage, something we can’t allow against Duke.

Mullins (8 points) and Ball (12 points) played 61 minutes, shot 40% from 3 and 60% from 2 points. Demary is a tough guy, Hurley said he was at 70%, and playing against good teams makes it difficult playing hurt. He played for 19 minutes (2 points, 3 rebs, 3 assists, 2 TO’s.) I like Smith’s game, 7 assists vs 1 turnover, and good defense with 4 steals. Stewart actually hit a corner 3 so he had 4 points in 3 minutes but is probably less than 70%. Reibe needs to be better against Duke and Ross must continue his defense and hopefully adds a little offense since his defense will give him lots of minutes.

Big game on Sunday!

Can someone take this gif and replace NEERRRDS with DUUUUUKE?

I'd appreciate it.

1. We got outrebounded by 8 or so in the first 10 minutes. We rebounded evenly with them the rest of the game.

2. I think you’re way too against the high hedge. Some games it works better than others, but I thought it worked really well last night. Yes, sometimes it leads to easy buckets but last night it led to tons of tough shots that they didn’t make at a high percentage.

3. With about 10 minutes left, when it had become a 50/50 game, we were 1-6 from the line and I thought “we’ve been flirting with foul shooting being our poison all season and now it’s going to cost us this game.” And then we hit 9 of our last 10. WTF do I know.

4. I think Duke is a very tough match up for us (because Reed can’t cover Boozer outside and I don’t know that Karaban can inside and because they may outshoot us by 25 FT attempts). But it’s UConn— Duke. For those of you too young to get it, we played them in the tournament 4 times between 90 and 04. In 90, they ended our dream season in OT in the Elite Eight on a Laettner buzzer beater (that history has ignored because of his later shot against Kentucky). In 91 it was miraculous we were in the Sweet Sixteen and they were much better than us and crushed us (despite Rod Sellers trying to shove Laetner’s face through the court and into the center of the earth). In ‘99 we beat them for the national championship in what fairly should be considered one of the best finals ever played, when they were an outstanding team in both talent and performance but we were somehow vastly underrated by the media given our year. And then in ‘04, DURING MY SON’S BAR MITVAH RECEPTION OF ALL THINGS, we had a late comeback to beat them in the Final Four in a game everyone assumed would crown the national championship (and did). AND THEN NOTHING FOR 22 YEARS. (Yes, I know we played them in the mid-60s after beating Bill Bradley and Princeton but that had nothing to do with the rivalry that ensued.). Well, Sunday it all comes back. They were a better team than us this season and have more individual talent. But all that matters is who plays better for 40 minutes. We all have today to recover emotionally and get some damn sleep. And then be ready for tomorrow.

I will rewatch the game but I don’t think the high hedge hurt our rebounding because it was a soft high hedge designed to keep Fears from penetration which we did. Our defense continues to be excellent. Reed got back into position very well, MSU is a terrific rebounding team

They just beat us to 50/50 balls on that end, that seemed to be the majority of it. But while the hedge worked on Fears there’s no doubt it will impact rebounding a little because Tarris is hurrying back and will not have position often. But you are also correct MSU is a very good rebounding team, relentless like their coach.

Chief it’s been 8 years. Can you please just accept the fact that Hurley employs the high hedge as part of his Defensive game plan? It’s not going to change so Criticizing it after every single game is not productive. for the sake of variety if nothing else.

I opened this thread knowing Chief was going to find some way to rail against the high hedge, as always does.

He did not disappoint.

But making sure to complain about it when it was such a clear obvious key to our victory tonight shows how dopey he gets with his game analyses.

Keep on Chiefin’, Chief!

I have urged Chief to get to get together with our coaching staff to explain why they should either abandon or greatly modify the high hedge. Just because we have the best coach in the country doesn’t mean they can’t learn from someone more knowledgeable than they are. Have you met with them yet Chief? You better contact them today.

You know there will be an opening on the staff next season. Though Hurley might be hesitant to add Chief. He would want the shown up as a casual fan by an assistant😉

I choose against rivaling your post for length and instead concentrate on this single, wonderful detail.

On that date, my youngest first cousin's son's Bar Mitzvah drew the family together in West Hartford - lengthy service, bagels & smoked fish afterward, and evening dinner & dancing...all at Temple Emmanuel.

The prior weekend, we all knew that the later reception would conflict with the semi-final game. My uncle took suitable lead in advocating for renting a giant TV for the cocktail hour. My cousin's wife was 100% NO.

My sisters and I (and families) gathered around a 24" TV at my stepmother's condo, and had no intention of heading to the reception until the game concluded with its "perfect game" final minutes. We were all dressed and ready for immediate departure as soon as the game finished, and when we arrived at our destination a few miles away, there were many cars arriving at the same time, and the reception went from relatively quiet at its stated starting time to raucously celebratory 45 minutes later than scheduled. My uncle & cousin missed the game. All else worked out fine.

This x1000!!!

F-ng FT's are going to bite this team in the ass was going through my head for a while.

I agree on the 1999 Championship and 2004 semi, which was basically the NC game. I was at both and those were two of the best games I have ever been at.
I know WBB and MBB have differences and but I have focused on sound Geno’s position defenses this season (stay between your opponent matchup and the basket) and how that leads to good shot D, few fouls, position for rebound before the shot is taken and a fast break. Very simple fundamental basketball but beautiful to watch. Calhoun’s philosophy was he put you on the guy that would give us the biggest advantage so while he would give different defensive looks, the core defense was to fight through screens wherever possible and stay with the matchup that favored us not let the opponent determine the defensive match up that favored them via the hedge or make us a step behind recovering to our match ups leading to fouls.
To your point, when we are less aggressive with the hedge, it is often said we use a quick drop but really it is that the starting point is on the side of or under the hedge not on the halfcourt side of it.

No but Do you hear me complaining about the hedge? he was the first player since Duncan to get 40 pts and 40 rebs through 2 games.

Little do you know our relationship. It is one thing to differ on basketball scheme ideas, he actually enjoys that, but another to attack him personal on some of his refs issues when Chief has been on his corner.

The offensive rebounds were frustrating but a worthwhile tradeoff if it means Fears is contained. If I am remembering right, a good chunk of their offensive boards were from their freshman F, not Reed’s man at the rim

I don’t attack our players like you did Solo Ball. That was my point our centers are talented and get good results when we are not extending the hedge. When we do extend it, Reibe looks loss, and Reed gets 4 defensive rebounds.
My goal is not to just beat #15 seed Furman but #1 Duke.

So your details deserve a response, so knowing that I’ve probably said this before (but not for the last decade) and at the risk of derailing Chief’s analysis (I’ll shorten it — less high hedging please), this was our story.

At that point my sons were 17 and 13 and to my wife’s utter chagrin the world revolved around basketball, largely UConn basketball. The moment the draw was announced on selection Sunday my sons and I all had the same thought, which was “oh crap, we’re going to be playing Duke in the national semi-final starting midway through our reception.” My wife could have cried, or started cursing us out, or bemoaned her strange choice in husbands, but God bless her, instead she ran with it. By the night of the game/event, she had decorated the children’s part of the room in a Final Four theme with mini-basketballs, pennants and trash bins of different college basketball powers, let a large screen TV be brought into the room by the bar, let our older son when dinner was finished before tip off change into a UConn jersey and paint his face blue and white, and even had the band ready to play the UConn fight song during breaks in the action. The party continued normally, but as the game wore on more and more people stopped dancing for a while and migrated towards the screen. I saw the last 8 minutes (and then saw the game when we got home afterwards). By contrast, we know another family who had a bar mitzvah reception that night, they were a hockey family that didn’t care about this, and just ignored that the game would be going on. Common friends who attended parts of each reception said that down the stretch of the UConn game at the other reception a third of the crowd were in their cars in the parking lot listening on their car radios. (And if any young person asks why weren’t everyone just watching on their cell phones I’m going right for the scotch.)

Good times. But I never dreamed it would be 22 years before Duke would get a shot at revenge from us in a tournament.

Way to avoid the success of the high hedge the last 2 games
