This is a difficult Brief to write. The reality was it was a close game, and Georgetown arguably slightly outplayed us the second half. We are a team that somehow knows how to win games but too often doesn’t play with the dominance we had hoped we had.

First, I love it when Karaban plays a tight effective game, rather than try to be a high shot volume scorer. Tonight he had 18 points, shot 63%, including 4-6 from 3pt. He went 4-4 from the line, including two key foul shots late. He also had 3 rebounds and 2 steals. While doing all that, he became the player, who won the most games in UConn history.

Solo Ball was our high shot volume scorer tonight, also hitting some key shots. He led the team with 20 points, shooting 41% FG (7-17) and 33% from 3pt. While their approaches were different, we needed both Alex and Solo’s end results. Solo also contributed 6 rebounds and 4 assists.

Reed had 5 fouls,1 rebound and 4 points tonight in 18 minutes. His fouls came from poor decisions but also from the high hedge putting him in a position to fail. When our opponent misses 31 FG shots and 8 FTs and our center gets just one rebound - you know it would be a long night. Thankfully Reibe was the one productive guy off our bench with 10 points (5-7) but still only 2 rebounds.

What concerns me, despite our wins is we have not fixed many of our problems this season and its mid February:
1) An inability to inbound the ball nearly cost us the game tonight.
2) Our coaching staff seems to be in denial regarding that many of our opponents now have the book on exploiting our high hedge defense. If we can’t fix it, we need to at least give our opponents other looks.
3) I always say preseason depth, as reported in the media, most often is overrated. Absent Reibe, our bench contributed very little tonight.
4) Demary had 15 points, 10 rebounds and 9 assists. He shot 50% from FG and 90% from FT (9-10). Exactly the type of foul shooting you want from your point guard late in the game. Smith was quiet tonight but we will need him too. How does that happen?
5) The crowd could have been better tonight, but I sympathize with many who had to make adjustments to watch a 8pm game on Valentine’s Day. Again, a schedule will never be perfect but we hopefully also address some lessons learned for future seasons so our team gets the support they deserve.

#2 is glaring. This high hedge BS is NOT working. We do not have the personal that are capable of executing it.
#4 SD has been a threat to be a double-double most nights. I love his steady presence.
#1 AK is comfortable in his role and a steady presence much needed.
#3 we have very little depth. I have been waiting for JS and JR to breakout. I don't think it is going to happen. They have been given ample opportunities with very little results.

On to the next game

Ross was at least effective slowing down Lewis in the first half after Lewis kept clowning Solo.

Reed is the most frustrating center UConn has had since Samson Johnson. Complete opposites of what they can and cannot do. Johnson was athletic, and could rim run. Reed is below rhe rim and a bully. Neither can could do the high hedge but for different reasons.

Slightly disagree on Samson. The whole high hedge BS is only as good as the rotations behind them. 24 Samson was a monster hedging because the cast around him could rotate and play D. Even a “mismatch” would be grown men like Newton or crazy Cam manning up. We do it now, and you’ve got Mullins in the post against Dillon Mitchell or Solo lost on the perimeter. Last year was same issue.

We have a collection of low to medium IQ basketball players being asked to play in a highly cerebral system.

Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn’t. We don’t have athleticism to cover the mental lapses.

.-.
We’re 24 - 2. I can live with that. Go Huskies
If ever the year to stay happy with the wins, reserve judgement. Is this team 2006 UConn or 2023? They feel flat and missing something right now, but also in a position where it feels rare that all players play to their potential in a given game. There is nothing about them visually that offers you the confidence of a title contender, but they are 24-2 and beat 3 teams widely considered title contenders early in the year, barely lost to a 4th down two men. The story will be written on this team in March.

So who are we?

2006 established themselves as a top team early, top 4 all year, won the Maui. Their flaws were exposed as the year developed. Once they hit March, they were a pumpkin.

2023 established themselves early, hit a rough patch in January then peaked when it mattered and went on what was the most dominant tourney run in Uconn history at the time.

I'm not sure where this team goes, but I suppose that's the fun of it.

Reed is not quick enough to be that far out and recover. On top of that he reaches in and fouls out there. The offense gets easy layups or to the line and Reed is out of position for rebounds. But our staff keeps having him do it rather than playing near and protecting the rim.

I guess a win is a win, although this is becoming ugly at best. This teams inability to step on throats will come back to haunt them when playing a good team.

Reed, hey Danny please stop the hedging he’s awful at it. It leads mostly to one of two things, either a foul in a bump or reach from 28 feet from the basket or a scramble by the defenders trying to make up for Reed not getting back fast enough. It’s horrible to watch and if he hasn’t figured it out yet after 60 games he’s not gonna. Let them shoot from 22-25 rather than these awful results.

Silas Demary, we’re lucky we have this guy let me tell you. So damn good he’s our best player and it’s not too close. 12 boards? Alex and Tarris had a third if that together.

Solo Ball, like his offense it’s good to have him making shots. Even at 7-17 yesterday he’s more like last year than many games prior to the last 2. His defense yesterday was dreadful. Whether it was Lewis or making Mulready an all star, he hasn’t improved there. Funny thing is, I’ll take the 17 points with 6/4 as well despite his inability on that end.

I hope they prove me wrong but watching this team game to game, getting us to a 2nd weekend would be successful for me. Anything more is gravy.

UConn started the game off strong but Hurley subs out Reed at 16 and Mullins 15. Why do they need a sub that early?! Mullins had one foul at that point, Reed none. The subbing ruins the flow.
Reed did have any early foul at that point. I assumed that he took him out so he wouldnt pick up a quick second, then Reibe was playing well enough and with energy and the team was playing well so he stayed with it.

Mullins was out because Lewis was eating Solo's lunch but Solo also had the hot hand early. You cant play both and Solo and Mullins in that situation so he sat Mullins.

#4...

As the season's progressed, I think it's safe to say Demary is our most important player going forward. I thought it would be Tarris the entire season, but he continues to make bonehead mistakes that a senior shouldn't be making. Higher-level Center competition has regularly outperformed him too. Demary consistently provides us with incredible on-ball poise, patience on offense, a dog on defense, and just gives that feeling of "everything is going to be OK" when momentum shifts to the other team; just like TNew's calming presence.

Our past championship teams, you always hear Hawk, AJ, Adama, Clingan, Castle, and Cam cited, moreso than TNew in my opinion. It's arguable TNew was the biggest contributing factor to those teams' success.

Demary's trending to have a similar impact and legacy.

One thing I have noticed the last few seasons, at first I thought we had unusually good rebounding guards in Castle, Newton, Demary and Mullins. While partly true, I now also recognize our defensive scheme often puts guards in better position to rebound than our centers. Something for our coaches to think about and perhaps act on?

Tristen played best in the biggest games and filled up the boxscore. It is a little bit of a mystery to me why he has not established himself in the NBA, perhaps due to not having that elite athleticism’s?

.-.
That was a very contrived and made up celebration/event.
It was an event that was only happening if UConn won. Better to have it before or during a stoppage of play at the next game. Fans last night weren’t great but nor did UConn set the table well. A 8pm game on Valentine’s Day did not make many fans attending the game - a very popular guy in their house. Then add on another event after the game at a moments notice, when we won in the last seconds is a stretch. It is easy for those in their living room, who don’t have to deal with the above, parking and traffic - to lecture others who make the trip to Storrs. But, the university needs to look in the mirror too.

The high hedge has its place. Big E is very good at it.

However.....

we should never high hedge with Malachi Smith in the game. The switches end up with him guarding the opposing center under the basket.
Whose the Big E?

The responsibility for Reed’s foolish fouls are a tossup between him and our staff.

Now that we have empirical evidence our bench was weaker than some thought, there’s less wisdom highly valuing our rotations.

I may be wrong to do this but every game we play I filter what we do as if we did it against an elite team and the consequences that would follow. We have lofty goals that other teams may not have.

It is time for the coaches to honestly look at the high hedge. I was criticized for questioning the effectiveness of it and now there’s consensus regarding various negative outcomes.
