Chief’s Briefs - Florida Edition

So you think a 15 to 1 foul shot disadvantage to open a game is just fine? I agree the high hedge is not meant for our guys to steal the ball, but my point is why then do we foul so much in it - lol what are we trying to do then?
Only after we get in foul trouble (which happens fast) do we pull the overplay off out of necessity.
Let’s count the number of fouls that are a result of the high hedge.

I think you play horizontal to the hedger not aggressively over it, that way you don’t open cutter lanes. Or create so many mismatches that then result in fouls. Of course, you need to read the scouting report and adjust for good three point shooters.
You have always been dead set against the high hedge and now are relenting somewhat

Foul so much in it? How many times did our bigs foul someone away from the basket on Tuesday? Zero. Most of our fouls came out of drop coverage when we gave their guards a clear path to the basket, with a handful when we didn’t execute the hedge and allowed it to be split.

If we had a double big set, it would be with Reibe setting high ball screens for a pick and pop and Reed screening for cutters and posting on any switching defender. Problem is that Reibe is not nearly as effective a screener as Reed. We're past the point of having time to experiment, but it may be worth a try.
Given that both players have been inclined towards foul trouble, I can't see playing them together for any extended period of time. We need both of them at the five. Without them, we become a donut team, with all due respect to Koroma and Alex.

We seem to have no happy place between not fouling and making even a minimum effort to contest progress. When we are told not to foul we play no defense at all.
It just seems to me we don't have a smart plan when we are up 5/6 points under a minute to go. Especially when we have trouble getting the ball in bounds.
