Chief’s Briefs - Florida Edition

Why does it seem late in games do we let teams run up the court in 4/5 seconds and score uncontested lay ups?
It’s inexplicable because it’s not like we’re scared of fouling and stopping the clock- we did that too!

It's a bit scary to see us get out-rebounded by such a wide margin, but comforting to know we could still win.
Only solution is Double-Bigs. Surprised Dan H hasn’t thought of that yet.

we lack a true muscle power forward. We miss having that.
Have you been holding a candle for Jeff Adrien for 16 years?

You don’t get the high hedge. The high hedge is not meant for the big to steal the ball. It is meant to disrupt the offense. I don’t think they scored at all as a result of it. Meanwhile, how many open mid range looks did we get as a result of their drop coverage that you favor? Lots
I get it -I don’t think a Big should foul
out there since he won’t be able to steal the ball.

My point is if you don’t overextend forward, you don’t have to overextend the drop coverage

So true, that takes care of weak side too!
Double bigs would ruin the continuous motion of our offense which totally wears out opponents. How do you think Reibe would move playing the 4?

I don’t advocate Reibe playing the 4. He is not a power forward. Part of a motion offense is guys that can set a powerful screen. Do you remember Calhoun’s double screens and how they would free people? Rip Hamilton was a pretty good motion offense running off those screens. The other thing they do if done right is get you to the line more. There is no one in UConn history more motion offense than Rip. But also thanks to Jake, Kevin, Edmund, and Souleymane for setting screens that are a key part of a good motion offense.

Be glad this obsession is from 2009. Most of his hangups are from 1995.
You should talk to Hurley’s dad. The first advice he gave Dan when he got here after seeing the team was to get more muscle. Hence, Adama and Taris.

Place him in the corner and have him knock down 3s

But you advocate for double bigs. I don’t know who would be the 2 bigs then.
And yes, RIP never stopped moving. The play with all the screens was the “circle” play. We ran it when I coached high school.

Gonna give AK some credit here on D/Boards/Blocks.. To my eye he has increased his strength and improved his D. Especially his lower body strength. He is not getting pushed off the blocks as much as he used to as an underclassman. Arizona/Florida/Illinois have some sturdy Bigs bangin' against him/Reibe/Reed- though still at 75% . He will never have the foot speed of Stewart or the hops. But I see improvement on that side of the ball. Is he uber-athletic? No.. But definitely improvement over previous years. Danny is gonna ride with AK at the 4 .

I think he wants Reed at the 5 and Hilton Armstrong at the 4

I would rewatch games in focus just on Rip. The motor on that kid was unbelievable.

If we had a double big set, it would be with Reibe setting high ball screens for a pick and pop and Reed screening for cutters and posting on any switching defender. Problem is that Reibe is not nearly as effective a screener as Reed. We're past the point of having time to experiment, but it may be worth a try.

Yes. But it would really curtail our off ball movement which is the reason our offense is so effective

We seem to have no happy place between not fouling and making even a minimum effort to contest progress. When we are told not to foul we play no defense at all.

So you think a 15 to 1 foul shot disadvantage to open a game is just fine? I agree the high hedge is not meant for our guys to steal the ball, but my point is why then do we foul so much in it - lol what are we trying to do then?
Only after we get in foul trouble (which happens fast) do we pull the overplay off out of necessity.

So you are in favor of a more passive high hedge?
I think you play horizontal to the hedger not aggressively over it, that way you don’t open cutter lanes. Or create so many mismatches that then result in fouls. Of course, you need to read the scouting report and adjust for good three point shooters.
