We shot about 48% from the field, had a 8 rebound team advantage and got 5 more assists than our opponents. Winning those metrics help you win games. When AG went down the team pulled together and everyone contributed in various ways.

Congrats, to B. Adams for stepping up when Gilbert went down. Adams and Polley shot 4 for 5 from 3. That’s a look into how things can be when the right guys take that shot. Something to built on.

Chief has said Akok is a “serious dude”. I think you saw tonight in the first half a glimpse of what I am talking about. He can shoot, dunk, block shots and rebound. We haven’t had a Big run the court like Akok in awhile. He needs to learn how to make the that stretch be the entire game.

James Bouknight also looked good considering the circumstances. Most importantly he got on the court and did a few constructive things. He can play. Scored a few and rebounded in his debut.

Christian Vital was solid with 5 assists but needs to back off his shot volume. Chief wishes AG a speedy recovery, his tough injury string continues. While he did not play well up to that point, he can certainly help us some nights. He needs to focus on distributing the ball and running the team - and scoring in the flow of the game.

Josh played better the second half than the first half. He’s got a big body now and while not the most athletic or fluid guy - he can now throw himself into the physical mix down low and offer some resistance against other teams Bigs and score some too. There a reason you call it the trenches. Mix things up Big guy. Whaley is more fluid but not as big but another by committee thing with guys learning their roles.

Tyler continued his modest rebounding vs. none last season. If this team rebounds by committee we can out rebound opponents as we did last night. Akok and James can certainly help in that department.

Jim Calhoun always said to celebrate victories, so your brain will crave winning even more the next time. So Chief leaves you with this celebration last night near campus. Go Huskies!

Don't forget Gaffney, his ability (and confidence) in bringing the ball up the court when AG went out was impressive. He showed skills and confidence unusual for a freshman PG. Buffalo was quick and tenacious, but Gaffney was unperturbed. Not often you can watch a freshman take control of the ball and as a fan, not be nervous, anxious or anticipating an unforced error.

I like what I saw in that kid, even without the points (which will come).

He seemed to have one job (get the ball up court) and he did it very well.

Adams showed me a lot. He took control of the team during some tough stretches. I was afraid his one big mistake might might haunt him (dribbling the ball out of bounds) but he and the team refused to lose.

Nice to see the team respond when AG tweeked the ankle. B. Adams (and others) stepped up and I think we wore them down in the last ten minutes or so. Bodes well looking ahead.

Bingo - You are exactly right. When Gaffney been getting zeros in the box score early on, Chief been saying what’s impressive is a freshman who missed all that practice isn’t making mistakes - he’s letting the game come to him. Last night he showed he can start to run a team. The dude’s got poise. He’s also NOT a kid who’s going to throw up 20 shots while shooting 30%.

Thank you for Briefin’ us on the box score. Did you actually stay up to watch?
LOL - Chief stayed up for the game and the wonderful celebration afterwards. Check out the picture. You need to get out more. The negativity doesn’t wear well when the team is winning games and Chief is supporting our guys. Why root against the team?

It’s sad how many haters you have that you had to time stamp that picture. Should be a trusted source by now

Bonehead thinks it would be weird and creepy for some 60 year old to be celebrating at a near campus watch party.

Creepier IF posting thier childs snapchats of near campus celebrations, considering the safety concerns that have been raised.

From the second row near center court, it was a great game. Brendan Clearly was our best all around player, even before AG went down he was a stabilizing force. He does the little things well.

Akok can do so much, so well. But what really stood out to me up close was the way he gets back on defense. You do not get many fast breaks against us when he’s out there. He hustles back very hard and can block your shot so he just takes that away from teams. Now we need him to look to do more on offense.

Bouknight has the highest BBIQ on this team. He’s so smooth and effortless and several of his best plays were driven by court awareness. He sees the play, sees the rebound, the pass on both ends and just adjusts. Reminds me of a more athletic a Nadav Henefeld in that way. He should be our best player by March. He was our best perimeter defender last night and it wasn’t close. Better than Vital, Adams or AG.

Gaffney has a very strong handle, which should end questions about whether he’s a PG. He is. I don’t know if his ankle is still bad, but his lateral movement on defense is awful. He got torched over and over. Adams got the bulk of the post AG work at PG mostly because they scored so easily against Gaffney. His offense is almost there. Hope his D arrives soon, especially with AG out.

Vital for the second straight game played the way Hurley wants him too (mostly). Some heady senior plays, stayed within himself and had a solid game. As I said last summer, if he’s our leading scorer and rebounder we probably lose. He’s there to stabilize the younger guys, and show maturity and he can’t do that while taking high volume hero ball shots.

Polley was good, made his looks, and grabbed some boards. His defense was just ok last night. He had trouble with Buffalo’s very strong, quick guards. That’s not a good matchup for him.

I almost laughed out loud when I watched Ted Valentine walk on the court. Naturally, the zebras killed us in the first half. They let an amazing amount of body contact go, along with offensive push offs from the Buffalo guards. Saw them huddling before the second half for a long time. Sure enough 5 fouls called by the two minute mark. They really tightened it up and that helped us. Oddly they reverted back at about the 5 minute remaining mark and Buffalo cut our lead.

Yes he literally calmed down a moment after I questioned his ability at this level. Good for him

Quick thoughts
Vital should never be the point guard
Akok is the real deal
Boukright is going to be a STUD - been years since I’ve seen that type of potential
Carlton looked slow
Adams played well
I would like to see Whaley more - he’s smart and tough

UCONN has the pieces Hurley has to put the right lineup on the floor regardless of seniority if he does that he can win a lot of games
