We shot about 48% from the field, had a 8 rebound team advantage and got 5 more assists than our opponents. Winning those metrics help you win games. When AG went down the team pulled together and everyone contributed in various ways.
Congrats, to B. Adams for stepping up when Gilbert went down. Adams and Polley shot 4 for 5 from 3. That’s a look into how things can be when the right guys take that shot. Something to built on.
Chief has said Akok is a “serious dude”. I think you saw tonight in the first half a glimpse of what I am talking about. He can shoot, dunk, block shots and rebound. We haven’t had a Big run the court like Akok in awhile. He needs to learn how to make the that stretch be the entire game.
James Bouknight also looked good considering the circumstances. Most importantly he got on the court and did a few constructive things. He can play. Scored a few and rebounded in his debut.
Christian Vital was solid with 5 assists but needs to back off his shot volume. Chief wishes AG a speedy recovery, his tough injury string continues. While he did not play well up to that point, he can certainly help us some nights. He needs to focus on distributing the ball and running the team - and scoring in the flow of the game.
Josh played better the second half than the first half. He’s got a big body now and while not the most athletic or fluid guy - he can now throw himself into the physical mix down low and offer some resistance against other teams Bigs and score some too. There a reason you call it the trenches. Mix things up Big guy. Whaley is more fluid but not as big but another by committee thing with guys learning their roles.
Tyler continued his modest rebounding vs. none last season. If this team rebounds by committee we can out rebound opponents as we did last night. Akok and James can certainly help in that department.
Jim Calhoun always said to celebrate victories, so your brain will crave winning even more the next time. So Chief leaves you with this celebration last night near campus. Go Huskies!
