Yes—-but need more than one player that can do that consistently
Ehh. Stewart and Ball both had some nice takes off the bounce yesterday. Karaban dabbles, though he needs to finish better, and it’s in Mullins’ skillset. It should not be a limiting factor of what should be a very good offense.

THIS BOARD: "UConn sucked"

THE REST OF THE WORLD: "UConn Huskies Crush Boston College 84-67 in Season-Opening Exhibition"
To be completely fair Boston College is awful

.-.
They must DUNK THE FREAKING BALL rather than trying to lay it up off the backboard.. How many chippies did they miss when banking them off the backboard? Many for sure. Make half of those misses and they win by 30.

He was assigned Hand in the 15-1 run. Hand had 18 free throws. Why? Because the only way we stopped him from scoring was by fouling him. Until Ross guarded him in that second half stretch.
Another way to look at it is that we fouled Hand before he had an opportunity to score unfouled.

Mullins learned and corrected that as the destine to be great ones do. Reibe is still in the process of learning that.

I feel like we have these comments every year. Going all the way back to Okafor. Is it really a problem? Not being a wise guy, I’m seriously wondering.

Not necessarily disagreeing—-I would just like to see a little more of it that’s all. Stewart could be a great candidate to do more of it

I think we need to give Jaylin Stewart a define role and hold him accountable. I think he has a high upside that he can fulfill this season. In my opinion, he was the third best player in the August 8th scrimmage.

Chief have to disagree on Stew. Got beat bad on D and settled for the 3 too many times. He went to the hole once and scored on a short bank shot, need to see more of that creativity. I love this kid but he needs to make a jump this year and it’s early, hope he does but last night was a bit disappointing for me.

The reason we lost games last year was not because we did not play defense aggressively enough, we lost because we committed too many foolish/unnecessary fouls. We got beat on the foul line last season. BC had a 30 to 11 foul shot advantage. We need to do better.

Unfortunately, Alex Karaban’s shot showed no improvement. Sure he’s a money player and hits some key shots on high volume and got rebounds. But, Alex misses when he’s off balance and leans forward or backwards. Too often he’s open but leaning. If he gathered himself, stabilizes his body and feet, he would consistently do much better. When he leans forward he hits the back of the rim. When he leans backwards he hits the front of the rim too often. This issue is compounded due to sometimes not having perfect backspin.

I think we need an expanded role for Stewart. He’s got the full package. Size, shooter, passer, runs well, shot blocker/rebounder and defense.

Mullins will be a great player but had early nerves tonight. He will not be a repeat of Maheney. Mullins has one of the best looking shots in UConn history. He’s athletic too with great fundamentals.

Reibe will also do very well, but rushed his finish moves. He has a good touch and it will show soon. He’s also had improved his body this summer/early fall. That was my concern that it would take awhile for a young guy his height to do that. He looks way ahead of schedule. His footwork is good.

Looking forward to a balance Solo Ball. He will be good with a balance between drives and threes.
Do you see Smith starting over Solo?

I always find the notion that people think these kids are just deciding to turn down an easy dunk to be pretty funny.
So do you think that they are being coached to turn down an easy dunk? If so, what do you think is the purpose of that?

We might not have realized it watching the game but Jayden Ross (+26) and Dwayne Koroma (+19) had the best +/- minutes. After that Karaban @ (+12). Lots of factors but give Jayden and Dwayne their due. May have something to do with their defense and a little rebounding?

Also, when an opposing guard shoots 18 foul shots, I don’t think our main defensive issue is Jaylin Stewart.

Additionally, exhibition games do matter seeing that huge 30 to 11 foul shot attempt difference. That was our biggest negative statistic last season and no improvement. There’s a saying, you are what you practice. This is on Hurley to discipline our practice defense more to reduce fouling. True, a balancing act since BC was pressured into 20 turnovers by our defense. But that type of FT attempt discrepancy will result in 3-5 loses if we don’t clean it up.

What would it have meant? I mean that sincerely. The only difference between last night and some of the closed door scrimmages the last few years where they lost or got pressed was that there was a crowd there.
The game identified several things to clean up such as lobby fouling and defensively stopping a penetrating guard.
It also is a brick in the wall of having our team learn how to win, with two starters out.

Thank you for pointing out Jayden Ross, I had commented on his play. He looked again, like the player we expected when we recruited him. That in itself is something to get excited about. At end of the day, this was a good way to start season playing with a couple of key players out. I don’t expect this will be the last time it happens. Offensively when we start hitting a grove, I think we have potential to be pretty scary.

To many needless fouls. Intensity was there but execution looked a little hazy. First 10 minutes of second half settled for to many 3's. Quick as well and then they started to take it to the basket. Not a great showing by the player that could set them apart, SOLO Ball. Mullins looked a little frazzled in the first half but the last 4 minutes of the game may be the most important for him. More of Stewart and was surprised, pleasantly, by Ross.
All together a pretty good mid-October, preseason game.

"lobby fouling"? I like it!!

There’s no way, if smith earns a starting spot it’s Mullins’s. Kinda what I’m hoping for actually.

we shall see. I’m thinking Silas. Smith, Mullins, AK and Reed
I don't know, I just can't see Ball not starting. Unless he doesn't play defense at all. And I think he will improve this year on that end of the floor. He's now a junior. He was the 2nd leading scorer as a sophomore last season (.1 ppg less than McNeeley and only .1 more than Karaban). He shot 41.4% from three. I see what Smith can add but just can't see Ball not playing 28-30 mpg (he was at 31.7 mpg last season). Can anyone average 28-30 mpg coming off the bench? I don't see that happening.
