Former Chicago Sky star guard Chennedy Carter has signed with another league in the wake of not receiving WNBA interest.

Grant Young | Apr 27, 2025

Veteran guard Chennedy Carter averaged 17.5 points per game with the Chicago Sky during the 2024 WNBA season, which was the 12th most in the entire league.

Carter (who played in China this past WNBA offseason and was named league MVP) was a restricted free agent after last season ended. However, the Sky made no effort to re-sign her for 2025. And Chicago wasn't alone, as the 26-year-old seemingly didn't receive any free agency interest from the 12 other WNBA teams, as she remained unsigned throughout the whole year.

"Amid WNBA disinterest..."

Some believe that Carter is being blacklisted by the WNBA because of her temper and inability to stay with the same team, largely because of stories about her impact on locker rooms. Regardless, it doesn't seem likely that Carter — who was one of the most talented guards last season — will play in the WNBA this year.

Not surprising, but too bad for a young player with so much talent.

I don’t think there’s any concerted effort by the WNBA teams, I think Carter’s done it just fine herself. After her freshman year, Anriel Howard and Dani Williams, two dyed-in-the-wool Aggies transferred out, and similar things have followed Carter ever since. It’s impossible to attribut any one issue to her (other than some documented events), but there’s a pattern that follows her.

A similarly-talented male player would not be shunned by colleges or the NBA. Suspect some WNBA team will take a chance on her during the season, despite her history.

I think she’d be in the league if there were 30 teams but there are only 13, and she’s basically burned bridges with every franchise she’s joined. This has Liz Cambage 2.0 all over it which is a shame since she could be a major star in the league based on skill.

Good for Chennedy Carter. She found a league and it's not that far from home. I hope it all works out for her.

I am definitely not a subject matter expert when it comes to the WNBA, I don't know if I ever watched a complete game start to finish. I do know that Carter committed a viral flagrant foul on CC. Is this the type of thing that can get you blacklisted in the WNBA? Has it been suggested as a contributing factor?

Again, I don't know...I am a UConn NCAAW basketball fan.

No, that foul wouldn’t get someone blacklisted.

A bunch of players committed flagrant fouls against CC last year, it was the cool thing to do. Probably some clickbait articles tried to make a connection between that and Carter not getting signed, but I don't think it's related at all. As noted she has been let go by 3 different WNBA teams now and has a history of not getting along with teammates.

What’s wrong with you people? We’re too old to be acting like middle schoolers
