Yes. The AAC has established itself as "the next best" of the G5 and it's not close. The coaching hires of recent seasons have been nothing short of inspired and motivating: Herman, Frost, Morris, Montgomery, Norvell, Strong, Applewhite...all good hires. Fikell is an interesting one as it's a defensive background guy. But he comes out from under the Urban Meyer tree and if he is anything like Pat Narduzzi and open to bringing in a good OC, he can very much succeed at UC.

That was the public rumor... But, Narduzzi and Diaco shared the same agent at the time so the assistant pool was too low for Narduzzi but not Diaco? I guess it is possible that Narduzzi had a better professional sounding board than Diaco did @ time when contemplating his staff and wasn't willing to compromise on dollars, but I also believe that Dantonio told him to hold out for a P5 opening and bumped his pay and Narduzzi backed out.

I do agree they need to bump the 9 staff positions salaries up where relevant.

I'm willing to put stock in the rumor. I have no idea if it's completely true, just an excuse for Narduzzi to pull out, or complete fabrication. But I see Pitt paying its OC $500K and we pay ours $300K.

I'll calm down a bit if we can get our OC/DC in the $500K range. I know I'm a Debbie Downer these days. I hate it. I really do. Just incredibly frustrated with things (like everyone else).

My point is that if our inability to bring in top talent to UConn over these commuter schools in our conference (with a fraction of our AD budget) is a systemic issue, then we need to fix our system. If we can't figure out a way to use our $72M advantage that we hold towards bringing in a top staff, then our problems run deeper than I thought.

It's not Strong that I'm upset about, specifically. It's the fact that we can't even discuss bringing in a guy like Strong when he becomes available because our program is so much of a dumpster fire.

On paper, Diaco's resume in 2015 was comarable to Charlie Strong when Louisville hired him. Obviously when Texas hired strong he had established his bonafides as a HC from his time at UL. But it wasn't like UConn was scraping the bottom of the barrel. At the time he was hired, Diaco fit the bill of the up-and-coming guy who was pretty widely expected to win and get hired at Iowa or Notre Dame. Obviously, it didn't work out that way.

Now if UConn decides to buy out Diaco, we might have to go for a FCS guy or some TE coach from the NFL. (Another PP). Then you'd be really pissed.

Aside from the fact that Western Michigan is better than the AAC champion you mean? I don't see the AAC at the top of the G5. I think there is a lot of parity in the G5. Which means that the G5 is roughly at the level of the top half of the FCS schools.

Being that it is completely unprovable, I'll say that WMU had zero percent chance of running an AAC schedule this year.

While the AAC competition continues to grow stronger, we continue to regress and move backwards, all the while wondering what was and what could have been if only we weren't stuck in this "lowly" conference that we can't seem to win anything in.

Have any of you guys really truly looked at the Assistants Staffing at our peer Conference Teams?

I am willing to bet - based only on the Experience level/where the Assistants come from - that the University of Connecticut staff is one of the highest paid in the conference. Seriously. If you get a guy from the University of Virginia or just was at Louisville or even the "Eric Fisher" guy or Michigan, do you think they get paid more or less than guys that came from Georgia Southern or Stephen F. Austin or Eastern Kentucky?

Diaco was given a good budget.

Poindexter and Verducci at $300,000
Brown and Cummings at $250,000
Lineburg and Wolthausen at $200,000

TJ Weist at $220,000

I would argue - quick skim - in those 6, they are all overpaid. Based on my view of the world.

No. Western Michigan does not go undefeated in the AAC. Not a single chance of that happening. Houston, with all of their 3, 4, and 5* talent (and dominating wins over OU and UL), couldn't run the AAC table. There are just way too many tough teams in the AAC...

...And then there's us.

I like to solve problems.

TJ Weist finds himself under a new coach now. He might be available. Offer him $400K to come back and give him 100% control of all offensive playcalling.

Added edit: we also offer him the Interim Coach effective Oct 1, after we start the season 0-4. And this time, we give him a proper interview and real shot at removing the interim tag, ala Ed Orgeron at LSU.

Done and dusted. That was easy.

Bottom line, Texas saves a whopping $1 million with this #USF contract. Still owes Strong more than $8 million total over next two years.
 
Strong is inheriting a good team. He will do very well at USF, and after 3 years could very easily be the man at either UF or UM.
