I'm not sure the kid can dunk, but he can shoot. There is definitely room off the bench for that skill, especially with playmakers like JA and AG getting you the rock. Makes sense to go after this kid; he's not a dynamic athlete, but his quickness/defense can improve. I just hope this isn't a Scotty Harrelson situation - although this kid is much more highly ranked.
 
Maybe he'll be the next Jimmer Fredette. Maybe he'll be the next Brian Fair.

I'd take either, happily.

I don't think we can assume based on someone saying he's a marginal athlete. You can be a lot smarter than a great athlete and perform defensively with hard work. And being small certainly isn't proof either. I mean doesn't Bazz pretty much fit the same categories?
 
Not to mention we have had some great athletes in the past with mediocre basketball skills. This kid has a reputation for being a marksman a skill that served many other undersized guards pretty well. Duke''s guards this year weren't dunking over people but shooting over them. Give me a shooter with no conscious and Ollie will find a role for that kid in a heartbeat.

Are we still having pissing contests on the topic of size, athleticism, etc.? Egad!!! College PGs or PG/Combos don't need to be great athletes. They do need to have quick feet (i.e. first couple steps) to stay in front of their man in the half-court and quick hands help as well. Being strong helps too, but that sometimes takes time for kids coming right out of high school. Bazz is a great example. He is not fast end to end nor can get over the rim, or at least not very often, but he was good at keeping his man in front of him at the college level. Agree? Disagree? Note this is not directed to you mau but to all who keep on kicking this poor dog to death.
 
Surprised nobody has said this (or I've skimmed too fast), but he reminds me a lot of Sterling Gibbs in terms to what he brings to the table.

Seems like he's extremely fond of UConn. Sign him up, we could use a sniper for 2016 with Bailey mission bound.
 
I really like the idea of landing a sharpshooter like this kid, plus I don't think he scares off a higher profile 2 guard like Diallo.

Strengths: A tremendous outside shooter who needs only a sliver of daylight to get his shot off, Powell is tough to slow down once he gets going. Capable of playing with or without the ball in his hands, Powell finds a way to get into the scoresheet, whether it’s attacking in transition or finding space on the perimeter and waiting for a feed from a teammate. Becoming a more all-around scorer who can create off the bounce and finish tough buckets around the rim. Strong-bodied guard who isn’t easily muscled off the ball.

Weaknesses: Though he’s worked on his body, still needs to continue to improve his conditioning to be the best player he can be, especially on the defensive end. Needs to work on being more of a point guard, because he’ll be small for an off-guard at the next level.

Overall: He doesn’t have optimal size for his position, but Powell’s productivity on both the high school and AAU circuits is impossible to deny. In the right multi-guard system where he can find open spots in opposing defenses, Powell could be an impact player right away at the mid-to-high-major level with his shooting ability.

He was dunking with ease so he is either taller than listed, or more athletic that supposed. Either way, win/win.

Every year there are kids who dominate the AAU circuit and land mediocre offers due to measurables and perceived limitations. See: guys like Buddy Hield and Van Vleet. Lets hope Powell is one of these types. I'm not saying he is as good as either and would be thrilled with a knock down 3 pt. specialist, but I don't get how killing the best AAU circuits doesn't get kids more top offers.
 
A couple observation. He looks more versatile than Shad. Sounds like he's not a great athlete, but a heck of a shooter. His handle looks much better than Shad ever had, who was good at creating space for his J, but really struggled getting to the paint or rim off the bounce. His hops looked okay, not uber-explosive, but got off his feet well enough to dunk with ease for a 6-0 to 6-1 guard. Sounds like he's struggled to keep his weight down, something apparently he's going to have to work on. You know a good comparison might be a bigger KEA, though his game has been described more 2G than PG. Khalid was a scoring PG who was a good passer and saw the court well. Some kids just never have a feel for the lead guard position, and it sounds like he needs to work toward being at least a scoring combo-PG at his combination of size and athleticism. He's one to keep an eye on, but I'd be inclined to think there are better fits for UConn, but what do I know. If he comes hear, I'll root my brains out for him. There's always a place for good shooters, but they won't see the floor that often if they can't defend. One definitely to keep an eye on.

Playing at the Nike Global Challenge for the East Team the kid shot 14-30 from three (47%) over four games, averaging better than 20 points a game and TWICE going for 30. And those games are against top top talent. He can shoot, but he's a player for sure. If he really is a UConn fan, lock him up. He fits the bill and we need some shooters going forward. Under appreciated talent.

Seriously all I needed to see what he recently averaged and that was enough. His defense can't be that bad that you pass that up.

Without seeing him play, I don't know. I'll leave it up to KO and his staff to figure out who they prioritize and who they stoke the fires as plan-B, C, etc. recruits. Maybe they're high on him. Maybe they're aiming higher. I don't know. It's good to know they have a lot of irons in the fire. It will be interesting to see who pulls the Husky trigger over the next few months. August through October are usually the most active months as far as commitments go. By then the recruits have achieved the test scores, allowing them to take official on campus visits. Lot's of in-homes start taking place. College programs, I think, begin to get academician results from the recruits schools. One thing is getting a great player to decide to come to your school. It's a whole other story to make sure you get commitments from the ones that will qualify and actually show up the following fall.

I just think we'll begin to learn of commitments maybe as early as the end of this upcoming month and into September. The staff has really worked hard this year and have already received some verbals, but I think more will be coming soon. Of course this is based only on gut feeling and past history since I have no insider contacts any more, though the ones I did weren't exactly all that accurate. My past contacts were UConn assistant coaches who had to be careful with what they said, but I've come to realize that they were just as unsure what these teenagers were thinking as us crazy fans who live and die on the whims of a 18 year old. Granted, sometimes they know that a kid has his heart set on UConn but is just taking advantage of the process wanting to go through the recruiting process and official visits, but most of the time they're wondering if the kid who seems high on their program is saying the same thing to the other top programs on their short lists. I do like my chances with recruits that seem cut from the Husky mold, who really talk highly of our program and do so more than they do for other programs on their list. Adams and Gilbert fit that mold. Now that's far from a litmus test since many have talked the talk but then after visiting other programs walked the walk right into a commitment elsewhere.

So of the recruits we know about, who fits this mold? IDK. Maybe the latest Boneyard generation who have insider contacts can chime in with which ones seem most likely to land here.

Rashad Anderson was also 5 inches taller than Powell. It's not just the fact that he's a mediocre athlete, there's also that he's really undersized for the position and isn't a particularly good ballhandler.
 
Would be an excellent complement to one of the other 2016 studs (I include Diallo in that category). Although, even if it were just Gilbert, Adams, Powell, and spot minutes from Sam Cassell, that would be a pretty good (albeit young) backcourt.

It's interesting that you put Cassell's name into this, because Cassell had a lot of open looks from 3 early on last year. In this offense, I think there is a need and a call for a dead-eye 3 point shooter. The opportunity is there. Omar Calhoun is another example, though Omar has a lot more athleticism and size than Powell/Cassell.
