Let's back off the "pathetic" language and recognize that 70% of the WNBA fan base is women.

What this reveals is the KIND of fans women are. If you acknowledge history, they were raise to watch men and ignore/not know about women. The dominant culture is about watching men. If they're connected to a man, they watch what the men watch, which is the men.

It stands to reason that the residents of the internet fan board would be the high-test fans... and again, the history past and present says "men watch men."

I think women's programs (and the W) do a piss-poor job of engaging their fanbase on the internet. That's why I like what Dawn's been doing. It's not the only way, but it is one way....

If you think that's happening in the men's game you are either watching a poorly coached team or aren't paying attention.

I think you have a large number of males 50 and older because the women now play the game the way we were taught to play it. Consequently we identify with the women's game of today and find it much more watchable than we do the men's game of today.

In my opinion, running over people to dunk the ball or shooting the ball from behind the arc is not "basketball" as I learned it. And yes, that makes me a dinosaur as my son says. So be it.

I agree that dunking is overrated, but I like the 3 pt shooting, a la Maya or Kaleena.

So I doubt that the Boneyard stats are an accurate representation of UConn fans
in general. Certainly there have been plenty of women fans at every game I've

Well, no, the stats aren't representative of all UConn fans and the survey was never intended to represent all UConn fans. The survey is clearly labeled as a census of the Boneyard and nothing more.

It's not unique to UCONN, it's WBB period. I'm a young whippersnapper of 52 who is frequently yelled at to sit down at basketball games. That happens much more at WBB games than MBB.

And most colleges that I am aware of do a poor job of engaging students as fans. Far more likely to be attending men's games while in school. "it's more happening" I suppose, or whatever today's phrase is.

Interestingly, for a Rutgers / LSU game a long while back, LSU held a student auction for tix to their bowl game (a good one, IIRC) at the women's game. Students had to remain at least into the 2nd half to be eligible. Good gimmick. And years ago, GW did an auction of student supplies (like refrigerators, etc.) in time outs. Also had a lot of students there.

But I'm sure that all those female students that don't attend dents the younger demographic going forward, both on the board and in the stands as well.

The 50-69 age ranges coincide nicely with teen daughters in the 1991 on era when UCONN WBB caught fire. That's almost 60% of the poll respondents. Maybe ????

In my case, you nailed it. When my daughter (and son) starting playing on travel teams, would take them and often their team to Gamble. Inexpensive, interesting day out.

I came to appreciate wcbb in the '80's because it looked more like the team game I played in my youth, than the the emerging individual, above-the-rim version of the men's game.

I want to be blown away by five individuals playing a fast-moving team game, where the whole is much greater than the sum of the parts.

There is a growing movement to center your team around a star, and then play AAU/school yard hoops.

You can keep it and the men's game, thanks. If I want individual sports, I'll watch gymnastics.

I know some might be disappointed they didn't get their responses included but I only have "room" for 1000 results so I cut the women's board off at 500. Five hundred responses in three days! Wowza, you guys rock!

Interestingly, fans of all teams but Tennessee and ND used names like Rutgers or RU, Louisville or UofL, Texas, etc. Only one ND fan said "Irish" fan. However, of the four Tennessee fans responding, three identified themselves as Lady Vols fans rather than Tennessee or UT-K. IMO, that shows what a disaster of an idea it was for the university to try to eradicate the Lady Vols designation as the fans identify strongly with it.

Long long time ago I stopped watching the hockey matches called Basketball--and more recently the UC Mens game--
I don't like public swearing or pulling players--demeaning even to the public watching.

In the old Men's College game --I liked the chess matches between coaches. They didn't have the fire power or the size
USUAllY--in addition to watching Student Athletes --watching what certain coaches would do next was part of the fun.
Geno--check and checkmate moves are equally enjoyable--many think the game is the 10 on the floor--sometimes.

should be "Anybody has a theory why The-Boneyard WBB responders demographic is somewhat older?" IMO it would be a stretch to say the sample is representative of the Fan base as a whole. I would be surprised if the age demographic was younger since it could be hypothesized that bloggers active on boards in general tend to be older on the whole.

I would have been interested to see how many games a responder has actually attended stated in range: now and then, < 5 a year; 5 - 10 per year; > 10 a year. Also: home and away; all home - Gampel, XL, Mohegan; only Gampel; only XL
