Yeah, this conference is terrible :)

Saturday will be a war...
As others on here have pointed out in other threads the problem with the AAC is that there are 5 very good teams and 5 terrible teams. Nothing in between. The top 5 should be in the NCAA Tournament and the bottom 5 won't even be in the NIT. No middle class would be a problem going forward so hopefully some of those bottom 5 improve in the coming years.

On the other hand 50% of your teams being ranked isn't too shabby.

Seth Davis has us 17th in his AP poll, up from 19th last week. Cinci is 10, Ville is 11, Memphis is 19, and SMU is 25.

I know it isn't the same but the Big East in football got creamed for too much parity in their league. No dominant teams and no doormats made for good in-conference play but killed them in terms of rankings, reputation and publicity.

Right.

You want doormats.

Just doormats who are only doormats in the league. That's how the old Big Eas was. DePaul was always bad, but the other teams would be pretty bad, but have solid metrics.

Problem isn't a lack of quality -- the AAC is clearly better than pre-merger ACC was.

The problem is a lack of rivalries.

When half of your teams are ranked in the top25, it's an accomplishment. There's no other way to slice it. And teams like Temple and Houston won't stay this bad for very long. They both have real reasons for believing that they are going to improve. So even after we lose Louisville, we should still be a solid conference.

I think the toughest thing for many of us is to properly assess this league in the shadow of the old Big East, which was without doubt the greatest basketball conference of all time. And the American and the new Big East are both worse off for not being together (the parts are unfortunately not equal to the sum). But this conference is showing that it is not a death sentence for us, and so long as we continue to send 4 or 5 teams to the dance every year, we'll be in good shape for as long as we're in the conference...

Of course you want doormats, why do you thin the B10 took Rutgers.

If Louisville were stuck here, this conference would have more than a chance. The problem is surely the addition of Tulane, Tulsa and East Carolina. The conference could easily carry a South Florida and Central Florida (2 schools which might occasionally throw a good team together) if it weren't for the incoming subpar bball schools.

Temple unfortunately lost Wyatt and is playing like a chicken with its head cut off so far this year.

Rutgers ex coach decided to abuse his players and they lost a ton to transfers.

USFs PG an one of the best game managers out there has been out all year.

Houston lost a high quality guard to transfer when his dad was sacked.

One of those things is something that wasn't preventable (Wyatt) but the rest were bad luck for the league. Moved three teams from maybe decently ba do downright horrible this year (so far).

Agreed. The only real "rivalry" is Memphis vs Cincinnati and neither of those schools consider each other their primary rival. You know you don't have rivalries when UConn-Cincinnati is probably your second best "rivalry" in league play.

The conference will still be good without Louisville. USF loses one player to graduation, they could be a tournament team next year. UCF could improve especially if their freshman big man gets himself into shape. Houston should be better. Temple has no where to go but up.

AAC 2015:

UCONN (tournament team)
Cincy (tournament team)
Memphis (tournament team)
SMU (tournament team)
USF (possible tournament team)
UCF (possible NIT team)
Houston (possible NIT team)
Temple (possible NIT team)
Tulane
Tulsa
East Carolina

Bottom line, it's still a solid league and improving. If given a chance it will be good. Recruiting should pick up for all of the new members now that they are in a real basketball league. Of most importance, this league should not feel itself inferior to the new Big East.

"Solid basketball league" just doesn't have the same ring to it as "greatest basketball conference ever"

I think Houston and Temple will be bubble teams year in and year out. I think the top 4 (excluding UL) will be in the top 25 every year. We just need better teams. I don't think ECU and Tulane are the answer and it will take years for them to get better.
