Caroline Ducharme - The journey back

It's great to see this come out like this. The epidemic of concussions in youth sports, and especially in young girls, is terribly overlooked. I put up a video on the MD forum of a friend of our family who was headed for a world's championship in mountain biking when a crash completely changed her life forever. Remaking ones's self isn't an easy task when you've spent your whole life building up your one identity. It takes buckets of courage, and it's great to see people like Caroline have what it takes, and are willing to share the journey.

Amazing insight. Thanks for posting. It only adds to the love of my favorite Caroline game (freshman year on the road vs DePaul). So she literally took over the 4th and hit the go ahead shot.. concussed.lol. idk if it's a too soon thing but she was so expressionless after the shot and her teammates were so excited. Idk if it was the silent assassin part of her or her just battling through a concussion. Anyways very fascinating article and journey. Also a bit scary as well. Just wishing her the best.
 
This is why I was not upset when my son decided he would no longer play football after he received a concussion, and his symptoms, while significant, were mild compared to what Caroline has had to deal with.

He is still bothered by bright light and loud noises on occasion almost six years post concussion.

Wonderful article, THANKS!I I know that 99% of fans did not know it was that bad, and I am one. I loved Caroline's freshman year because of the way she took over when Paige got hurt and was magnificent. I posted she would earn multitude AA honors and then............it all blew up in her face. I didn't know about the extent of her injuries until this article and now I am even more impressed at her grit and determination. Prayed for you .Caroline for the last 2 years and I predict you will have a come back season in 25/26 that every one will be talking about. GO CAROLINE!!!!!! GO HUSKIES!!!!!!!!

Concussions are so scary, and it seems like doctors are just beginning to understand how best to treat them. Thank goodness for the advances they are making.

I'm sorry your son is still dealing with his symptoms. I hope he—and Caroline!—will be totally free of them some day soon.
 
Mixed feelings on these Caroline stories. One of my favorite players, you often do not fully understand the impact of severe concussions until many years later. Press is creating click bait by implying that her primary goal is to play basketball again. In the whole scheme of things, sports is of relatively minor importance versus fully living her next 50+ years.

Caroline's journey has been one of those that stories and/ or movies are made of.

I have no idea whether she will be a major contributor this coming season as some fervently hope or a bench player. And it makes no difference. As long as she is healthy that is all that counts.

She will always be a UConn Huskie in the absolute best sense of the word.

I remember a girl who played on a California team and was injured and transferred to I think Texas Jackie maybe that was her name and she played her senior year. Im praying Caroline plays next season and her journey will end up in a NC.

"Carey's story of perseverance is well known. The 1999 Miss Colorado Basketball was the 2000 Pac-10 Conference Freshman of the Year at Stanford University before concussions sidelined her for the next two seasons. After a year free of post-concussion symptoms, Carey transferred to the University of Texas, where she was a two-time All-Big 12 Conference selection."

Sorry to hear about your son’s concussion. Sending him prayers for a full recovery. Stay strong.
 
Very emotional and comprehensive article in today's Waterbury Sunday Republican about Caroline's whole journey.
Written by Maggie Vanoni, more than a full page.
I don't have a link because I read it in the actual paper, and don't know how much mirrors the Courant article above, but thought it was worth a mention.
Such a warrior and my sincere hope is for her to return to the court and go out as a competitor.

She has had so much past diagnostic help that she may be in a position to understand, in the terrible case that new issues develop, what position she is in. Too many athletes tend to ignore head injuries.
