Carla Berube to become next Northwestern WBB coach !!!!

Not sure how far $1M will go in the Big 18 but it's better than nothing I guess.

At least she can offer scholarships now. Northwestern is an excellent school in a great city. Carla drew players to Tufts and Princeton- she knows how to recruit scholar-athletes

I thought of Carla, Megan Griffith (Columbia) and Carrie Moore (Harvard) when the Northwestern position came up.
All three have made their teams the competition for the Ivy League title and/or getting into the NCAA and/or WNIT/WBIT.
They've done it, with Carla doing it a bit more successfully and also developing three players for the W.

The academic standards are a big challenge, but the financial grants most top Ivies give now to folks under a certain income make it easier to help recruit. Still, landing a Madison St. Rose, the NJ HS player of the year, isn't going to happen every cycle.

Northwestern can offer a bit of both: NIL money and the academic reputation that many players will go after; rightfully knowing most of their careers will be in something other than hoops by the time they're 25-30.

The Welsh-Ryan Center was redone just before the pandemic and while not a huge arena, it's top notch.
"Uncle" Joe McKeown had gotten Northwestern into a few post-season tourneys in the early 20's when Veronica Burton was wearing the purple and white, but it's been steadily downhill since then. Uncle Joe stayed too long.

I think Carla Berube will rely on her connections to academic high schools that produce very good players to form the basis of a team and will use that $800,000 to go after the Burtons of the world that can get into the post-season.
In the meantime, she and her family should enjoy Evanston and the northern suburbs: great towns (I spent two summers renting rooms in N'western while interning in Chicago.)

Good luck!

This is great news for Carla and for UConn. I still believe that she will be the next head coach to replace Geno. Sarah will be at the school for two more years and Olivia three. So Carla has at least five seasons of P4 ball to get under her belt. Beruubeee.
More likely Shea.

To be clear, revenue sharing and NIL are two different things. Revenue sharing is the university’s money, NIL is the players being paid for their Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) by advertisers. It used to be that players couldn’t appear in commercials and be paid for them under NCAA rules but the Supreme Court said the NCAA couldn’t prevent people from profiting from their own names, images, and likenesses. And so now you see college players making commercials and raking in money.

Even though Carla may only offer a recruit roughly $70,000 or so in direct payments ($1 million divided by 14 players), if Northwestern can get back to winning, advertisers will come calling. Northwestern has an NIL office, as does UConn and most other schools, to help their students in that effort. Carla has been successful elsewhere and she’s got some UConn glamour so I’m hoping the revenue sharing + potential NIL + winning will help in her recruiting

Nahhh! Southern Gal has it good. A great location; a better conference; a school with a great tradition even if more so in baseball; awesome BBQ but not as famous pizza. It’s all Carla to learn at NW then off to UConn when called upon. I have been saying this for years now.

Well, I guess that ends the (silly) speculation that she wouldn't want to take over if / when Geno retires because she's just happy at Princeton... or something...

Could somebody remind me why anybody would want to take over after Geno retires? What is the upside, what is the downside? Pretty much, regardless of any success, the person would be considered a failure. Reading the Boneyard, it often seems even Geno is a failure! Why would Carla want this job?

Can’t we celebrate Carla without starting thread #1001 on Geno’s potential replacements?

Maybe. But she will be almost 60 by then. UConn might want a younger coach. Shea is not much younger. Either of those two would seem great,
