A’ja is unquestionably a great player and is almost certainly going to win the MVP. However, the thing that puzzles me, is how she never seems to be doubled and also that teams don’t seem to be trying especially hard to deny her the ball! I would think that if a player is dominating to that extent, it’s time to absolutely sell out and make the rest of the team beat you. Yet, this seemingly never seems to happen! Not that I’ve seen anyway. They absolutely face guard ( though this has eased somewhat now) Caitlin Clark for 90 feet and basically mug her on court as a matter of routine but then allow A’ja to receive the ball in her choice locations and then wonder why she is scoring 35 on them! I just don’t get it! I might lose anyway, but I’m not sitting back and allowing one player to essentially destroy my team without trying to make the rest of the team beat us!I will say that Phee is on an upward track right now as the seasons nears the end, while A'ja is on a bit of a downward spiral, partially because I think she's exhausted of having to carry the Aces on her back (No player should be needing to take 28 shots in a game to barely win it.)
My current take is that MVP isn't going to be a unanimous decision anymore as it's going right now, with Phee excelling and A'ja's stats dropping a bit. had you asked me a month ago, I'd have said A'ja was unanimously the MVP. But with the way her team and she herself are going, I don't think that's the case anymore. Not to say A'ja is doing bad, I still think she's the best player in the league right now, but the gap between her and Phee is closing quickly if the Aces keep going the way they are.
I also feel like team success has played a part in past MVPs. The Lynx are thriving. The Aces are majorly struggling.
