Can we start making the case for Pheesa as MVP???

Fighting quite a head wind for A'ja Wilson I think.
I will say that Phee is on an upward track right now as the seasons nears the end, while A'ja is on a bit of a downward spiral, partially because I think she's exhausted of having to carry the Aces on her back (No player should be needing to take 28 shots in a game to barely win it.)

My current take is that MVP isn't going to be a unanimous decision anymore as it's going right now, with Phee excelling and A'ja's stats dropping a bit. had you asked me a month ago, I'd have said A'ja was unanimously the MVP. But with the way her team and she herself are going, I don't think that's the case anymore. Not to say A'ja is doing bad, I still think she's the best player in the league right now, but the gap between her and Phee is closing quickly if the Aces keep going the way they are.

I also feel like team success has played a part in past MVPs. The Lynx are thriving. The Aces are majorly struggling.

Phee is gaining ground. A lot will depend on how A'ja and Phee play over the last 9-10 games. A'ja had such a great start to the season that she left everyone in the dust. Now that we are back from the Olympic break, Phee has been red hot and A'ja has maintained her solid all-around play. Phee is going to make the voting interesting down the stretch for League MVP.

Agree with what's been said. I'll add, if Pheesa continues on an upswing, A'ja on a downward trend, and the Lynx finish in the top two or three and the Aces remain below that, Collier has a pretty good shot at winning. As has been pointed out in another thread, it's been some time since a player not on a top-three team has won the MVP.

In a word, yes. Power rankings put the Lynx at #2 now, just ahead of the Sun, and that matters.

.-.
Honestly, I think it depends on whether the voters vote for MVP or MOP. Most Valuable Player or Most Outstanding Player.

I don't think there is much doubt that this season A'ja has been the best overall player, especially before the Olympic break. BUT the award is MVP. Honestly, I think a good case could still be made for Stewie. The best player on the best team who has been her team's leader all season... BUT I get why it wouldn't be Stewie. She's had too many games where she scored 15 or so points...

Still... it makes for a nice debate, and I think Copper could probably be added in to the discussion as well. Not that she would win, but if Phx makes the playoffs, Copper will be a main reason for that.

I fear it doesn't matter how good she is... it was the same way in college. She never got her due as far as I was concerned. She's too mature and business like. Not enough drama in her to get noticed enough. She is always the quiet assassin. I loved seeing her give up multiple inches to Wilson over the weekend and our play her!

Phee is definitely the most valuable player on a contending team. She was having an mvp type year before her pre-Olympics injury, during which time Aja had a great stretch. But for missing those games, during which the Lynx looked average, Phee would be neck and neck with Aja now. Phee clearly was the better player in their last 2 head to heads. But the Aja hype will be hard to overcome.

Ionescu is right there with Stewart as the Liberty's top candidate. Right now it looks it's Wilson as option 1a, Collier as 1b with Ionescu/Stewart as a distant 3rd/4th. Vegas faltering + Collier turning on the jets bodes well for her chances.

Stats feel like criteria number one for many voters. Collier will need to close the gap a bit, especially on ppg, for some voters to even consider not putting A’ja #1. If their stats mirror one another, she can steal votes from voters who value team performance / most valuable to a team vs the voters who vote for the most outstanding individual player despite team performance.

Aja is currently ahead 5.5 ppg, on marginally better efficiency. Without closing that gap, it’ll always be an uphill battle.

A'ja with a monster game tonight. 42 points!? Wow. But again, it will come down to the voters on the MVP award. Both ladies (A'ja and Phee) are playing at a high level, Same with a few other players. It is going to be an interesting race to the finish for the MVP.

i don't know how to pull all-time stats, but how many times has a player on a top-4 team averaged 20+ ppg, 10+ rpg and 3+ apg ? and she will likely be 50% from the field.

How you gonna drop 40 and 7 and your team still loses to the Wings ? Feel bad for A'ja, she's carrying so hard.

Lack of defense and rebounding (-14 on the boards). Ironically, the other best stat line of the season came from Caitlin Clark (24 points, 19 assists, 6 rebounds) in a loss to the bottom feeder Wings too.

Rebounding has been an issue. Last week Collier outrebounded the Aces by herself.

I don't think Aja will get a unanimous vote this year because of Naphessa's play.

It was a 4th place vote that lost A’ja the award last year. No, she won’t get unanimous # 1 votes this year but I don’t se many votes at 3 or 4 this year. Still . .. .

Does “Most Valuable Player” mean the player that played the best statistically? Or possibly, the player that added the most value; as in the most Money?

WNBA reports record TV viewership for 2024 season, highest game attendance in 26 years. The Women's National Basketball Association is averaging 1.3 million viewers per game, tripling last season's average of 462,000 viewers.

Pheesa has had a great year. She is clearly the glue and do it all player for her team which finished second. Wilson had a gaudy year statistically but MVP is different from MOP. If I'm a purist, I go with Pheesa.

Well, that’s the new definition used by the Clarkistas. But it’s not the traditional definition which has Ben “the best player ( offensively and defensively) among all players who, at the end of the regular season, have lead their team to the playoffs,”

By the way, I don’t think Clark’s defense is as bad as some say, but it ain’t great like her competition for MVP.
