Can Kayleigh Become A Consistent Double Figure Scorer Next Year?

One thing about KK is consistent top shelf defense and disruption. Kayleigh is an excellent defender but a more skilled and multi-dimensional offensive player than KK. K9 sometimes has been frenetic and mistake prone as the PG but I truly see high offensive potential to her as a scorer. As prior posts have pointed out, Jovana may be an even better scorer although it is hard to project the skills and results you see in the league she is currently in to our level where( Final Four excepted) the game is faster and should be called tighter.

As for Allie, it is true that K9 and Allie are symbiotic on the court but Allie also has had games where she has had no impact. We may in fact see a starting two guard offense with Ash and KK starting with a front court lineup of Jana/Olivia, Sarah and Blanca. I am focusing not on who starts but who is playing and I think if K9 shows that she can be a consistent scorer she will get the minutes.

I also think she is a WNBA player and that her meltdown in the FF will only mean she gets more focused and intense. I really believe she is that kind of a kid. We know she is very smart and the smart move is to work so hard that redemption is a given.
"a starting two guard offense with Ash and KK" ? 14.5 ppg last year. That would mean we would need 60 ppg from Jana/Olivia, Sarah and Blanca to be competitive.

Not really. Last year, UConn's defense allowed 52.2 ppg; so on average, they wouldn't need 74.5 ppg to be competitive. Even if they did need the additional 60 points ppg, those points would come from a combination of Sarah, Blanca, Olivia, Jana, Kayleigh, Morgan, Allie, Jovana, Fisher, etc.

Let' be realistic and just look at the last 3 games (against real competition). Defense allowed 52 ppg just like you said, but offense only scored 61 ppg. We have no stats on Morgan, Jovana or Fisher as they didn't play, but Kayleigh had 13 points and Allie 4 points in those 3 games. I wish I could share your optimism here, but...

Of all the players on our roster, I think Heckel and Allie have to make the biggest jump for us to compete for a National Championship. They're both just better offensive players than KK and Ashlynn. After Sarah and Blanca, we need to get a lot of points from a lot of players, and they, to me, are the two most gifted offensive players on the team not named Sarah and Blanca.

We all know that K9 is a great defensive player.
On offense, she has given up some nice open shots
and passed the ball to another player. She has to shoot
more, and if she does, she will be a great all around
player.

Why not K9? Someone from the big guard group of KK, Ash, K9, Allie, Morgan & Kelis is going to have to step up as a scorer with more minutes next year.

We kind of know what the floor is with this group, but not what their ceiling is.

K9 showed a lot this year, especially in March. She could certainly be the one, and with KK&Ash now seniors, could have that starting point slot locked for the 27-28 season.

KK and Ash will definitely start as will Sarah and Blanca. That leaves one spot. Allie, Jovana, Olivia, Jana, K9, or a player to be named later? I suggested that K9, if she develops offensively over the summer , can play some off guard and if she does she will see more minutes. There were times where both KK and K9 were on the floor at the same time last year. I don't think that is controversial at all.

In their freshman year KK and Ash averaged a shade under 20 ppg as starters for most of the year - Paige and Aaliyah were the team's top scorers as Azzi was out most of the year and Nika ran the point. And that was with everyone playing crazy minutes since we were short-handed all season. Their role this season was more defensively focused with three big scorers but I'm confident that they will again contribute more points with Sarah and Blanca being the Paige/Aaliyah of the upcoming season.

As I have said before, give Jana a chance to start and make an impact next season. I believe she is better than Serah Williams, just needs a chance to prove it.
And if not Jana, then Big O or Gandy. All three have an advantage over an incoming senior in that they have more than one year remaining in their available time at UConn. Jana and Gandy also have the advantage of being familiar with UConn's offensive and defensive systems, so they don't need to unlearn whatever they were doing at their previous school.

I don't see Gandy as being a factor. I also do not think that there was anything more than moderate improvement by Jana last year. I am hoping that her real "sophomore bump" will be this summer and next season because she was a year behind due to injury. It will be very telling to see who, if anyone , Geno gets in the portal. My guess is a shooter and a power player.

In reality, K9 is not a very good shooter. Shooting guard will be out of the question, so she should stay as the PG, and whether she starts or not will depend on working on her 3 point and mid range jumpers. I love K9, but KK will start because of familiarity and loyalty. KK too must work on her shooting, as averaging 10 points a game should be the minimum for a starting player. K9 is an important piece of the NC puzzle, but Geno is the puzzle master and only he can decide what is best for the team.
I am a big fan of K9. I cannot think of any other UConn player with as much energy and commitment to succeed. That being said, she would need to be paired with a strong defender. K9 is high energy but would not be a 30 min. a game defender against Top 10 offensive talent. UConn won this past year as much based on their defense as offensive skills. Suspect the wins and losses will be based on the same criteria this coming season.

I agree 100% with this post and actually thought that after Williams struggled, that she should have moved to the starting position. For the posters that say she doesn’t have the skill’s, go look at the films of her pre injury. She has the skills, give her the PT and support and she can be the big we need.

K9 can become a starting, star if given the assets and if she takes the time in
the off season. She starts wirh speed and is one of the fastest players in women's
college basketball. This speed can be an asset if used properly. And her shooting
can improve with a lot of practice.
