Can Kayleigh Become A Consistent Double Figure Scorer Next Year?

### I never claimed or insinuated that you did.
+++ No.
I'm just responding to what you posted. And I'm still not sure of the relevance between the '02 team and this coming team.

I think Kayliegh Heckel is an awesome role player and has the tools to score 10+ppg.

I think Ashynn Shade returns to previous form and scores 10+ppg at 48% fg or better.

I also think Sarah and Blanca will need help from another big time player against the A tier competition, and that player is missing from the current roster.

I only see Jovana as a PG, but I see Kayleigh on the floor also as a shooting guard.
From what I've seen, Jovana looks more flexible offensively than Kayleigh. She is a serious perimeter threat as well as a penetrator. What Kayleigh has that Jovana hasn't shown me yet is defensive intensity. And when I think of PG skills, my mind turns to passing and shooting skills, to be sure, but also to defensive skills. This makes up at least half of the responsibilities for this position. KK and Kayleigh are excellent in this aspect of the game.

Some of the top guards in women’s D1 basketball:

Hannah Hidalgo 5’ 6”
Rori Harmon 5’ 6”
Jaloni Cambridge 5’ 7”
Raven Johnson 5’ 9”
Aaliyah Chavez 5’ 9”
Kymora Johnson 5’ 7”
Shay Ciezki 5’ 8”
Sayvia Sellers 5’ 7”
Taliah Scott 5’ 9”
Zamareya Jones 5’ 7”
Ta’Niya Latson 5’ 8”

South Caroline: Johnson and Latson. Talent usually trumps height. If Geno chooses to go with KK and K9 together, we’ll be okay.
The issue is can you match up with a team like SC or USC with two guards that size…

You just listed 4 players with the potential to score 10+ points per game for UConn in 2026-7.

In my previous post I mentioned that next season UConn might win with 4 or 5 players scoring 10+ points per game. Sarah being one of course.

I also previously mentioned that the 2001-02 team that had 5 players that scored between 10 and 15 points per game . . . as an example. Never claimed or insinuated anything.

How are you still not sure of the relevance between 2001-2 and 2026-7 teams? Check the front of the jerseys. 🤪

Linking to UCONN announcements would have been helpful in understanding your post.

At least for me.
Sorry about that! Here is the math: Five Current Players are "out": Carol D, Azzi F, Serah Williams, and the recent "transfer portal" decisions by ICE Brady and Yanna Patterson.(5) With Olivia Vukosa and Jovana Popovic as incoming Freshmen,(2) therefore:
15 - 5 = 10 + 2 = 12, with a maximum of 3 slots remaining ...should
Geno choose to use them, i.e. 15 maximum players to a roster.

I believe your reply is off point. You're bringing forwards and centers into a discussion about point guards. I responded to post #19, where Johnhelvete expressed a concern about playing two 5' 9" guards at the same time (e.g., KK and K9). I simply pointed out that some of the best guards in NCAAW D1 basketball today are the same size or shorter. Pointing out that Raven Johnson lost the last two NC is a head scratcher. Is your point that she was taller when she won the NC in 2022 and 2024?

I believe your reply is also off. 😉

South Carolina won the 2022 national championship game. 5'8" Raven did not play in the NC game. Tore her ACL in the 2nd game of the 2021-2 season. Team succeeded without her.

South Carolina won the 2024 national championship game. 5'8" Raven shot 1-11 and scored 3 points in 37 minutes. 7 teammates scored more points. 4 teammates scored 11+ points. I am certain SC wins that NC without Raven.

Pardon this Raven Johnson interruption to this K9 thread.

Yes, I’ve got the math. I’ve seen the post’s for Ayana and ice entering the portal.

I thought you were referencing official UCONN announcements that I was unable to find.

👍

Yes, she can. K9 can score in all 3 levels (she's got a nice jump shot in addition to her kamikaze layups and 3 point shots). She needs more minutes and not to be deferring.
I agree. With more playing time (I’ll be surprised if she’s not averaging 25 min/game) and no longer deferring to Azzi, I hope she doubles her scoring!

First of all I want to put out there that I am a huge Kayleigh fan. She wears her heart on her sleeve, gives it her all, and we have recently found out that she does the same with her academics. Next year, I will keep track of a streak for her for most consecutive games diving on the floor. She is the type of player that will likely be haunted by the game against SC for the entire summer and that will be a very powerful motivating force.

I think the title of this thread poses an interesting question because the answer really depends upon what role she is called upon to play. If she remains solely as the back up point guard, you will probably see an improved year in scoring in 2026-2027, but not dramatically. If however she is called upon to be a scoring point, much the same as KC was in 2024-2025, I do think she can and will have a double digit average. I say this because she has all the weapons. She has a true pull up jumper, has a 3, can drive both left and right, can finish both left and right( was called on TV one of the best finishers in America more than once, a moniker I am not sure was deserved), is not afraid to mix it up, has speed, gets steals, and has good in the air moves, such as a double pump.

Having said that, to fulfill this new role, she needs to have a very productive summer. She needs to get stronger, shoot a ton of 3s so that she has full confidence and a faster release, get that pull up even more vertical, work on her left hand, and also work on that off balance jumper. I do believe she is capable of averaging 10-12 per game and if she does, that make us that much better as a team. She has flourished here in every way, so I fully expect her junior year to be her de facto sophomore leap year here because it is her second year. I for one can't wait to see what that looks like.
Interestingly, K9 was something of a shooter in high school, scoring 50+ points in one game. She has a nice touch, but points aren't her focus. She's a terrific defender and key component of UConn's pressure tactics.
Having said that, we do seem to need a reliable scorer to fill-in for Azzi, though we may have one coming in.

KK averaged 30+ minutes a game and scored 8.9 a game

K9 only played about 16.9 minutes and averages 6.9 a game

Both of their rebounds/steals per game are similar....

Both play very good defense. KK a little better.

K9 is a better 3 point shooter, and drives to the basket better. KK can drive to the basket good but is sometimes limited in her moves.

So K9 can definitely hit double figures if she gets more minutes.

I see K9 moving to shooting guard which was Azzis spot. KK will always be the point. (She has started a lot over 4 years)

I am not factoring in any portal players.
I'm not saying it will happen, but having two elite playmaking guards has always been intriguing to me. We've been successful with that on the men's side.

I watched Jovana also. Kayleigh is physically stronger, taller, and more experienced in the UCONN game and in women's college basketball. She is also an opportunistic scorer. I think a lot will depend upon Kayleigh's summer, but just witnessing her personality, she is not going to take the last game lightly. She will have her game face on from day one and I just hope she is given the chance to have more minutes. In the end this is all off season speculation so we will see.

Actually, one of today's threads listed measurements for the world's players for the game on the 11th (?), and Jovana was listed as 5'9 1/2".

I think Kayleigh would take on any role asked of her. She is that kind of a kid.

Pardon this Raven Johnson interruption to this K9 thread.
You introduced Raven Johnson as a leading character in this drama and made it sound like SC lost because of her. All I pointed out was that she, among others, was about the same size as KK and K9. I'm not sure why you had to point out that "SC with Raven lost the last 2 NC" or went on and on about the size of wings and post players when the discussion was about guards.

Back to the thread, based on K9's high school career, her performances in the 2024 and 2025 FIBA World Cup games, and the McDonald's All-American game in 2024, she is more than capable of becoming a consistent double-figure scorer.

If Heckel starts with KK, I can see her approaching double-figure scoring. If Allie starts, maybe 7-8.
Allie is a better scorer than either KK or K9. If she plays with real aggression, she is Chris Mullin like in her efficiency and floor impact Have to add that I have not really seen her play like that since high school.

I expect Allie to start next year at the two. I also expect that she will score effectively. But if Heckel starts instead alongside KK, she Heckel, could average double-digit points.

You have some huge scoring shoes to filll losing Azzi and the guard group this year couldn't do it when it mattered most. To play at UConn and move up you need to either be a favorite of Geno, or be able to deliver in the clutch. This year the team struggled when Sarah or Azzi didn't have a great night. Most of the time it didn't matter with the competition being what it was but eventually it showed in neon when they played the last three games.

Question isn't who can score in double digits, the question is who can deliver when the game is on the line? Right now any guard on the roster should have a shot at making a big move especially Kelis. She can pass, she can dribble and she can score. Can she defend at a high enough level? Sarah can't do it herself and after her it is wide open for me on who else should be on the court the most. The summer will be important to a few of the players.

K9 is a good shooter, good defender with exceptional energy but does not have the quickness to take on the top guards. KK is a world class defender. Suggest that when evaluating her, you need to add 2-3+ baskets to her box score due to her normal steals per game. Love to watch K9's drives but suggest that they are not sustainable against top teams. With Blanca getting more minutes next year, K9 is ideal first sub to add energy to game. Nothing wrong with being the 6th player on a top 5 team.

All three of those players have to make a leap over the summer but you’re right to point out that K9’s chemistry with Allie.

I think she is going to be a double digit scorer and a lot more. She really grew on me as the year went on. She is a future star.

One thing about KK is consistent top shelf defense and disruption. Kayleigh is an excellent defender but a more skilled and multi-dimensional offensive player than KK. K9 sometimes has been frenetic and mistake prone as the PG but I truly see high offensive potential to her as a scorer. As prior posts have pointed out, Jovana may be an even better scorer although it is hard to project the skills and results you see in the league she is currently in to our level where( Final Four excepted) the game is faster and should be called tighter.

As for Allie, it is true that K9 and Allie are symbiotic on the court but Allie also has had games where she has had no impact. We may in fact see a starting two guard offense with Ash and KK starting with a front court lineup of Jana/Olivia, Sarah and Blanca. I am focusing not on who starts but who is playing and I think if K9 shows that she can be a consistent scorer she will get the minutes.

I also think she is a WNBA player and that her meltdown in the FF will only mean she gets more focused and intense. I really believe she is that kind of a kid. We know she is very smart and the smart move is to work so hard that redemption is a given.
