in reply to the Lakers job--said so pretty quickly. Lets hope that KO does the same AND that Manuel makes sure that KO is a top 10 paid coach with a ten year commitment

He's got a dream job down there, I don't blame him one iota. Maybe the best job in college basketball, why look for greener pastures?

Warde needs to lock up Ollie and remove any desire to look elsewhere.

March 27, 2009: http://www.commercialappeal.com/news/2009/mar/27/john-calipari-insists-memphis-where-i-want-coach/

Calipari, who just completed his ninth season with the Tigers, told a group of reporters at Wilson Air Center today that Memphis is “where I want to coach.”

April 1, 2009: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=4031573

[John Calipari] sent a text message to ESPN.com's Andy Katz on Tuesday evening saying, "I am accepting the UK job! Go Big Blue, coach Cal."

If the Squid is staying a stand up guy like Ollie would never consider it. Who leaves their dream job after two years- in the state were he raised his family- to go baby sit a bunch of highly paid babies and be under the microscope from day one. Sounds like a high paying job in hell to me.

Hopefully he can get by on 2 mill a year and stick around a while.

However- if I was in the process of negotiating my new contract- I would not say anything that make UCONN think I am a lock to stay. Staying quite might just get him an extra 500K a year- KO is a smart guy and it is a smart move.

Agreed on both counts, good points Scot-E. Negotiations 101, why say anything to make them think I'm a lock to stay?

Let's hope Warde is a more proactive CEO than a Tim Cook-type scaredy cat, waiting around and paralyzed to act at Apple. Get it done yesterday, Warde!

"Calipari wouldn't/couldn't leave these kids." Too bad his players don't feel the same about him.....

Maybe I missed it but wasn't Warde supposed to meet with ko and reconstruct his contract?

What happened?

Good point Scot-e, but honestly, I take it even a step further. Ollie is a stand up guy. Honest and ethical as they come. I don't see him "holding out" or playing any kind of negotiating tactic (I hate to use the word "game" because I know you weren't implying that Ollie would play like that) to get more $ out of UCONN. I think if LA did/does contact him, he goes to Warde and says...

"I have no intention of going anywhere, but clearly winning a NC in my 2nd year here has raised my stock dramatically. I'd like to discuss an increase to my salary commensurate with what I just accomplished"...

If squid made this statement it was in either of his anticipation that he is about to leave KY for LA or he knows the Fakers have the good judgment to not even consider him for the job and he is trying to put a positive spin on a mythical 'never going to happen' job offer.

KO is not going anywhere. In 5 years, perhaps. Afterall, he spent a lot more years in the NBA, getting the best and most diverse coaching education that one could get. Is he a lifer at UConn? I'd like to think so, but not if we're still in the AAC in 5 years.

The NCAA isn't nearly close enough to investigating UK. Squid can do whatever he wants there, now that he's protected at an Untouchable program like UNC and Duke. I bet if they were smelling something, he's be gone just like he did Memphis.

Cal has already failed at the NBA. He can't even coach 18 year old children and get them to listen to him. How is he supposed to do anything in the NBA? Nobody can seriously respect him at that level...

NBA coaches don't coach, they manage egos and try not to get in the way if the talent. Calipari would be very good at this.

The only way he'll get busted is if someone does some investigative reporting, follows a lead, digs real deep and finds something. The NCAA is not going to do the dirty work. EG, the only reason they went after USC was because enough of a stink was made about it publicly. Their hand was forced. Similar thing is going to happen at UNC imo.

Problem is, a lot of the investigative reporter types in MCBB seem to like Calipari.

Realistically, it depends on the players. If you have good players, and can manage egos/coach, you're a demigod.
