BREAKING NEWS:

University of Connecticut men’s basketball coach Jim Calhoun will undergo a surgical procedure Monday to help alleviate the spinal stenosis that has forced him to take a medical leave of absence.

Calhoun is expected to be hospitalized for one or two nights, followed by a recovery period at home. He will not coach the Huskies’ games against Syracuse on Saturday or at Providence
on Tuesday, the seventh and eighth games that the Hall of Fame coach has missed due to the lower back condition. His coaching status will then be evaluated on a day-to-day basis.

“I’m glad we have finally determined the best course of treatment to deal with the problem,” Calhoun said. “I’m looking forward to having the procedure done, hopefully recovering as quickly as possible, and putting it all in the past.”

The Huskies play host to Pittsburgh in their final regular-season game on March 3 at Gampel Pavilion. Postseason play begins with the BIG EAST Championship on March 6-10 in New York City.

Associate head coach George Blaney will continue in charge of the team in Calhoun’s absence, with Kevin Ollie, Glen Miller, and Karl Hobbs serving as assistant coaches.

Not good news. But, obviously, taking care of his health first is absolutely the right thing to do.

Well, I'm glad he didn't need a more intensive operation. Hopefully he gets well soon and we get him back for Senior Day...but most importantly, get well soon, coach.

Damn, I was hoping he'd be back for Saturday, maybe the last go-round for the 2 war-horses Boeheim & Calhoun!
Best of luck to Coach Calhoun, always a worthy & respected adversary for Cuse fans.
Get well soon, JC.

Maybe the NCAA. Pitt's out.

The problem at MSG? He wouldn't last 5 game days in a row :). A really poor set up in that respect.

This is good news. Now there is a procedure he can have that will put him on the road to recovery.

He clearly was not himself on the bench. Looking forward to having coach back where he belongs.

Ouch. Done for the year would you say?

It's one to two nights in the hospital, then intensive rehab. Really can't imagine him being able to resume coaching 100% this season.

I agree, its fantastic news on him finding and selecting a solution. He has done more for UConn than anyone ever will. I could care less about his basketball future (I'm exaggerating here), but I'm trying to say that Calhoun is family and him living 'out' a back pain free life is more important than anything else. We may see him in the tourney or may not see him till 2012-2013, but at least he will be well and recovered.

It would be nice if there was an electronic way the BoneYard can sign and send a Get Well card.

From a syracuse fan hope everything goes well and Jim is back and coaching next year. Also hope the ACC wakes up and gets UCONN in and the hell with Notre Dame who already destroyed one conference. Personal preference as much as i detest Rutgers because they bought nothing to the conference except wins in football and basketball at least they are an eastern school. I want UConn and Rutgers as 15 and 16.

My friend has spinal stenosis and had surgery and was out of work for little more than 1 week. He is an auto mechanic and on his feet all day and feels much better now. Do not know if coach JC is in the same situation but there is hope he could be back soon.

I know it's putting the cart before the horse, but wondering if he'd be able to fly for potential NCAA tournament games. The tournament starts March 15.

It's a risky procedure. He isn't having a wart removed, he's essentially having his vertabrae shaved off the nerve. The degeneration will continue as he's 70.
