2026 Recruiting: Caden Pierce (Transfer) potential interest

Painter is also probably the most unlucky great coach of his generation. Any other year he wins a championship with the 2024 team he had, he just happened to run into arguably the best team of all time. In my head he basically has a championship.
100% - they ran through the tourney up to Uconn, won all games but Tenn by double digits, had that Tenn game in hand. They were clearly the next best team and far better than the rest of the field.

The question I guess this all comes down to, can Pierce go to any school and be as good as Matt Painters sr year as a Boilermaker when he averaged 8.6/4.6/2.6?? 😳🤔 😉

The one time he made the final 4 he got smoked in the title game against Hurley.

It's weird you think he basically has a championship because of that and it's weird he's being compared to Hurley.

Sure he's a great coach, he ain't Hurley.

I think Painter is a great coach but the bolded is comedy, I guess you're adding a title to every coach's resume that lost a title game then

In my head Duke basically won the 99 title.

Yeah I don’t think so

I'm not sure Alabama couldn't have knocked them off that tournament.

Nope it doesn’t. County and Furphy will be battling for the 10th or maybe even 11th man so unless/until Furphy shows something at some point this year I’m going with the shiny new toy that staff put more recruiting effort into more recently
I think you really have not watched Furphy in his games in Australia nor U19 nor when he played for us. He has moxie, scrappy defender, charges in to get a rebound and get fouled. He is a 2/3 not just a shooting guard.

The problem is we are overloaded on wings so much that he has to be behind Solo/Mullins at the 2 this year and even if one is injured, we go with Stewart.

He has been really nice saying he doesn't care if he plays at all this year and just wants to learn. He will definitely be higher than 10/11 next year on the bench.

Where in that post did I say he was Hurley?

Reading comprehension is hard.

Not ever - now. This isn't a HOF conversation, this is about top coaches today. Like if you're an AD and want to build a winning program today, who you're going out there and plucking. Big difference.

I don't really get it. He seems like a good guy and is obviously a very good coach. He's been to one final four, been upset early in the tourney a few times, and hasn't really had consistent "dominance." Meaning he'll have three or four 25 win years in a row, then have double digit losses for three or four years. Rinse and repeat. I mean, even today, gun to the head, if I had to pick one current coach to win me a game not named Hurley, it's not Painter. I would still go Pitino, Few, or Self without hesitation.

Unlucky is a hell of a way to spin losing in the first round with Ivey, Edey and swanigan. He also was gifted possibly the most dominant player of this generation in Edey. He hasn’t been unlucky. He just hasn’t gotten it done.

Also didn’t get it done with Hummel, Moore, and Jujuan Johnson

He's played 41% more minutes, but only 27% more points. He's passing it a bit better I suppose. One thing with Stew is the guy never gets to the free throw line, as in never.
Well he got there against Illinois and clanged them both

Unlucky because his best team ever (obviously championship worthy) ran into the best team ever. How is that not unlucky?

Because luck had nothing to do with it. He just lost.

He had the most dominant player of this generation. For 2 seasons. And didn’t win.

What was his excuse the other 20 years?

Demary / Ball / Landrew / Transfer / Reibe
Transfer / Furphy / Ross / Stew / Transfer

Definitely Higher than 10? Show your work Who’s he ahead of? Not seniors Ross/Stew or the big time backup PG and C we need. Furphy or County are 10th at best and half the board don’t even think Landrew should be starting which would push him to the bench, and Furphy/County out of the top 10.

Lol @ "gifted" , this thread has jumped the shark

You think he or any one else thought he’d become that dominant? Yes gifted. Someone THAT dominant is always a gift. Hurley was gifted Clingan as well. Recruiting is a crap shoot at times

Yea we don't view recruiting the same, I'm going to give more credit to the coach who recruited and offered the barely top 500 recruit and invested in his development. Based off of his track record he's a power conference coach that doesn't just recruit off of a list of players that everyone else says is good, he trusts his own evaluation.

Every thing you said is true. He still got lucky. You believe he evaluated Edey to be THAT good? It’s okay to say getting a guy who ends up being that good has some modicum of luck involved.

That’s not what “gifted” is. You used the wrong word.

Purdue has not raised tuition $1 in 12 years and is a top ten Engineering school both undergrad and grad.....that is a winning combination.

West Lafayette is a dump and Purdue’s campus is as well lol, this isn’t hard fellas. It’s a good school academically, when did anything different ever come out of my mouth

How about one coach pulling together a roster with limited funds, coaching them, building strategies. It's not about a one game situation. It's about building a winning team.

Do I have to send you the blind peer survey of peers/coaches and who they voted as the best X & O's coach in the game? It was Painter - and there was plenty of context and interview text. Hurley was just behind him. How did Pitino do in his one game against Arkansas last year? Cal schooled him. Forget Pitino.

And no, this thread wasn't about comparing Hurley to Painter, up until someone decided crapping on Painter as it came to this Princeton transfer. Painter is a really good coach.

I'll give Painter a lot more credit getting "lucky" with Edey (recruited/developed) than I would Hurley backing into Spencer. Can anyone say Nick Timberlake? Give Painter his due. They are both excellent coaches. I'm sure Hurley would tell you the same.

Yes Hurley got lucky he missed out on Timberlake and got Spencer.

See how easy that is?

Luck is required to win big. Every coach gets lucky sometimes
