BYU Scouting Report

God, what a OOC slate. 4-2 and winning the Big East regular season title would have to put us square into the top 8 seeds of the tournament

5-1 and a BET regular season title would lock up a #1 seed in a region. I doubt 4 teams will have a strong conference and OOC
Second option is kinda what I was hoping for, but now without Mullins I'm hoping we get that 4-2.

Not weaker than Texas and Kansas, but arguably weakest of the other 4. They have no depth at all. I'd rank them as:

Arizona
Illinois
Florida
BYU
Kansas
Texas
Forgot about Texas. I have KU over BYU because I have Petersen over Dybansta and you just can’t be down to a depleted UD at half
I don't think we really know. No clue how good Illinois really is. I wouldn't overreact to a young KU team losing in Chapel Hill to a monstrously oversized UNC team. About all I'd say about these six is that Texas is worst. The other five, it's too soon to tell.

I have no idea how these 6 great OOC games are going to turn out. But I like playing all these teams early while everyone's trying to figure things out, gel as a team, freshmen getting comfortable, etc.

In that construct, I like that we have two starters with a ton of experience playing together (Karaban and Ball), and 2 starters/important bench pieces with nearly 1.5 years of practice/game experience together (Reed/Stewart/Ross). Plus a gamer that seems to be settling in nicely to his role (Demary), and a backup PG with a ton of game experience (Smith).

Oh yea, we also have a coaching staff with a very good sample size of being able to gameplan for big games/tough teams.

Edit: I also like that 5/6 games will be at sites where we should have a decisive home crowd advantage.

They struggled to beat Villanova and didn't look good against Delaware until Saunders went off in the second half so:
Have they been overlooking all their opponents?
Have they been looking ahead to UConn?
Are they taking time to put a new roster together?
Is Delaware a new powerhouse in all sports?
Or have they been overrated?

I think BYu and Florida are the 2 most overrated teams in the top 10 and we’re lucky enough to play both

I think Illinois is going to be really good. They just beat TT without their starting center and one of their best players.

KU is kinda weak outside of DP, although I like Bidunga. That game will be tough because of Phog, but I they feel pretty firm in that 5th spot against those teams, which have much better overall rosters. It's not a knock, since the other 4 are generally top ten teams.

A little Koroma is going to go a long way.
I've mentioned this in other threads, but Koroma's path to minutes against top teams is as a defensive piece against big lineups like BYU's where Koroma can become the de facto 3 along w/ Karaban and a big.

Isn’t that the hope for Ross? He should be big and athletic enough to defend any opposing 3

I think Stewart is a little bigger than Ross, stronger for sure. Would you say Ross is big enough to handle Caleb Wilson at 6'9-10"? I admit that wont' be likely, but even a guy like Bryce Hopkins could be to strong for Ross.

Jaylen definitely has more thickness than Ross. They look about the same from a height/length standpoint. Jaylen bodied up Eric Dixon last year. His issue isn't strength, it's quickness. Wilson might be too quick for him at his size.

And way too long/strong for Ross. He's a problem in part because he's mostly playing 3 and overmatching college 3s yet is quick enough to guard them.

Looking at our big 6 OOC foes, matchups will be a part of the challenge. Not sure which teams are likely to cause us problems or vice versa.

Sure but Stew is just not a good defender. There’s always going to be exceptions, We have no one that can guard Toppin straight up either, but at 6’7 210 or whatever Ross should be able to guard 99% of wings effectively

I don't want to jinx it by agreeing so I'll just say there may be some who agree with you wholeheartedly!

Ouch he was 4th in their team in mpg
Also the guy that was going to guard Solo.

Not impossible he still makes the game, though, haven't seen anything official that he won't play.

Davis has been BYU’s best perimeter defender so far and one of their best 3 point shooters. It will be a big loss for them off he doesn’t play. He sat out their game against Delaware to rest a sore Achilles and their defense struggled much of the game.

BYU fan boards seem to think it involved something other than alcohol, possibly medication or weed. But out send unlikely he plays unless there’s something exculpatory, and doubtful that would come out before the game on Saturday.

If he doesn’t play, it tips the scales a lot more in the Huskies’ favor.

Love this test. This game won’t determine where we go. It will merely tell is where we are at the moment. I saw Alabama vs Purdue last night. Two good teams. Two complete games. Nobody will convince me that they are clearly better than us. If Hurley can get our D to be top 15, watch out.

Well said - only issue is these early games will weigh heavily on seeding.

Pain meds makes the most sense given the timeline of the arrest. It was 11:45 AM and he was supposedly on his way to the flight to Boston when he was hit and arrested
