Butler Postgame Thread

Reibe actually has shown pretty well in P&R, just not with lob finishes.

They should run this more during his minutes. Guards just need to dump off vs lob because neither Reed or Reibe can jump.
That's what I mean....he has a ton of potential there, just isn't going to get enough opportunities. He's going to be very deadly with an offseason.

Happy for Solo but let's see him become more consistent besides teams like Butler. Smith is almost unplayable and he didn't even play good D. Kind of sad to see. Glad Tarris had a monster 2nd half. Need to keep feeding the beast and no more floaters for him hopfully. LOL! Demary was tough and made some big shots. Mullins had a great first half and good to see he scored 15 in his homecoming. Tough place to play and decent win after much better 2nd half. Defense is starting to worry me a little as teams are penetrating on us pretty easily.

We have zero PNR threat on this team. Remember this same offense got us 2-3 easy lob dunks a game with Sam/Cling? Riebe could develop into that, but Tarris is the worst we've had at this. People ask why the guards don't drive? Everything is cluttered and contested. They have nobody pulling the defender away.

Tarris obviously did have a better passing effort, mediocre rebounding. The decisive version of his post game is all he should be doing. One dribble and go, or one dribble and pass.

Braylon and Silas had pretty bad games on defense, and we had zero adjustments to their pick and roll. It was incredibly easy, and no doubt that tape will get passed around on us.

Solo had a high ceiling game.
I don't think you can expect Tarris to do anything that requires intuition.
We struggle mightily with strong athletic 4’s. It’s making me not want to play Houston at all.
Tugler isn't much of an offensive threat. This Houston team is entirely guard driven offensively. Very diff than most KS teams.

When Reeds locked in and his head is in the game, he’s almost unstoppable.
Guards need to be better at stopping penetration at the top, leading to easy roller dump offs. I know some of this is to run teams off the three point line, but the defense off the penetration is bad.

We saw a bit of where Mullins needs to work on D in the start of the second; Matta did a great job of getting a Finley/Ajayi screen three times in a row and getting Ajayi on Mullins, where Ajayi feasted. A great NBA play call by Matta.

Love seeing solo find his shot, he’s looking more confident and seems to be shooting with more verticality and less looking to get fouled.

Would love to see the bench do anything, but Mali continues to be a weak point. Wasting 10 seconds at least every play pounding the ball into the ground, and has some truly terrible over commits on Finley that let him drive easily into the lane.

A win is a win, and a currently Q1 road win matters a lot. Let’s keep taking care of business

A lot of things I didn't like about that game but we won by 10 on the road.

I'll focus on the two things I loved about it, Solo finding his three point shot and Tarris fully engaged in the second half and dominating. Those are two things we haven't seen in a long time.

Hurley is refreshing with how candid he is. He has a bromance with Thad and then tells the court reporter he loves Thad and something like he's one of the best coaches in college basketball back when it was real college basketball.

.-.
Pros: Solo getting into a rhythm in the last month is exactly what we need to see.

Reed dominant 2nd half

Mullins continues to just be insanely fun to watch.

Clamped down on TOs finally.

Cons: We have a big bench problem. Stewart is unplayable at this point. Every time he steps on the floor it’s like an 8-0 run the other way. He hasn’t gotten any better since he stepped on campus.

Hurley seems to have finally realized that Malichi’s minutes also need to be severely limited, which is good.

We still get caught with dumbfounding lineups for a good 8-10 mins a game. Cant have multiple non-Reibe bench guys on the floor together ever pretty much.

Hurley often talks about how he doesn't have many relationships with college coaches because he didn't grow up with them as a college coach, often mentions just Shaheen.

Haha I don't. It's Feb. He picked a guy for Silas at the 3pt line and literally just parked it. I mean...that can't be what he's taught to do. Your 5 at the 3pt line while your PG is attacking. Smh

Got to love Solo's shot coming around. Tarris with 7 assists, Silas with the double dub.

Our bench did squat.

This team still feels like it's missing something. BUT, Michigan is playing a bad NW on the road and down 9 at the half. Road games midweek......

Man Butler screeners sure did a ton of pushing of our defenders away from the hoop as they tried to go around them. Not a single one was called.

Not pretty at times but quality win and played well in closing time. Other teams having tough games too.

Not bad
7-9 ft’s
Good observation about Reed cluttering lane at times
TO’s still bad
D 1/4 step too slow
Reibe needs to be tougher, quicker
I think we still have a lot of room to grow, the question is, can we do it? Part of it is on the coaches, continuing to tweak the offense, but really harping on defense as well

The Good
  • Welcome back Solo Ball! What he did do (24 points on 6-10 three point shooting) overshadows what he didn’t do
  • Tarris came alive in the second half. Really solid passing. Low key triple double watch?
  • Silas had some bad turnovers but overall a double double, 5.0 AST/TO, 3 steals, and the dagger 3 to cap the 10-0 run
  • Speaking of, this was a pretty close game until a 10-0 spurt in a couple minutes late ended it. That is the potential of this offense
The Bad
  • Aside from that elite 10-0 stretch, the remaining 38 minutes was a pretty back and forth affair against a bottom tier BE team. Woof
  • Pick and roll defense and off ball defensive rotations took a major step back today. How many wide open dunks did we give them on bad rotations?
  • We played 4 guys off the bench and none of them inspired much confidence
But a win is a win. Feels like the defensive gameplan was good. Bizjack and Ajayi had 12 points on 4-16. Elabor and Traore shoot <20% from three and each hit one. The guys who we dared to beat us had pretty good games, credit to them for that

Let’s go Huskies!

Defense was just awful, TO reared their ygly heads early but seems to have been cleaned up later, ross and to a greater extent Stewart seemed to have lost that confidence they found before st John's. I think Mullins was trying too hard at times leading to the foul trouble but still managed to have a good game. Solo looked like the solo of old noticed the wrist tape was gone tonight maybe the wrist is finally starting to feel better. Tarris though he got lost on defenses too many times he did play well on offense and hut his FTs.

Gotta get the bench going somehow can't go to the bench up 8 and then 2 minutes later need to bring the starters back in because nobody can or wants to score.
