Butler Post Game Thread

First game all year I didn't get to watch and can't watch tomorrow because of Peacock and of course Solo and J-Ross go off!!! My wife said it was a super fun game to watch.

Great job boys...you impressed my wife!
I’m impressed your wife watched the game without you!

If you have YTTV they added NBC Sports Net which shows the peacock games. It recorded for me

Are the Huskies making up fer certain shortcomings?

Braylon is behind schedule, that much is evident. Some of his fouls (or reaches) appear freshman like, in that he has not realized the speed and physical strength of D1 ballers. Being a freshman his pre season injury (missing games) affects him much more than an experienced Reed. In time he will catch up and then he will explode. To me he needs about a month of reps, so mid January he will have arrived.
He’ll be scoring 20+ soon. He’s pretty active on the court. Does a lot of things away from the ball.

Except for the fist 5 minutes or so we looked very good. Interesting that we have 2 very different 5s. Reed is just a bull, especially if the refs let him play like they did last night. They could have put 4 guys on him and he was going to the hoop. Reibe is more not exactly a finesse guy but ball handler, passer.

But that game was a physical mismatch. If that’s the #3 team in the NBE, Hurley needs to sit down with Geno to discuss how Geno keeps his team focused when he plays through the weak schedule he has to deal with.

On Ross he played great. Not convinced yet though. I’ve watched many coming out parties over many years. Sometimes they are real. Other times they are 1- shot wonders. Let’s see what he does going forward. I hope it’s real.

I’d guess that’s more by design than a lack of confidence. He’s the fifth option in half court sets. That’s not a knock on him, we just have a really good team. But he is generally setting up in the weakside corner and has been a nice outlet when his defender rotates and it allows him to hit the offensive glass pretty hard. Especially have liked his aggressiveness to drive the ball when the lane is open and the drive and dish to Reed you mentioned was great. If we can get out running this much, that’s where he really adds a lot offensively right now.
It’s not by design. He’s just scared of the ball until he does something good.

Great way to start BE play. Ross played his best game ever. Solo got out of his shooting slump. We outrebounded a team and shut them down with our defense.

But FTs, TOs, and fouls may come back to bite us sometime this season. I hope not.

I hope Stewie and AK are alright.

Malachi - he was really off last night
Our offense slows down with the ball in his hands. Several times last night we ran out the clock without a shot. Seems like too much pointless dribbling. Smith is a dribble first guard who doesn't look to run a fast offense or fast breaks of any kind. Why this continues I don't know.

He is valuable to the team with a great change of pace, but he sure needs work on his pull-up floater and foul line activities. Missed early foul shots seemed to impact his rhythm. His defense is impeccable and one key reason to keep giving him court time.

The second half fouling has to be cleaned up ASAP. 6 fouls before the first TV timeout, in the bonus before the second and the double bonus with the majority of the second half to play. Putting teams on the line allowing them free points with the clock not moving is gonna bite them in the ass sooner or later.

On the otherside though can't have only 2 reliable FT shooters in solo and alex. Mullins hasn't been there enough to prove he's reliable, malachi has been bad, the rest of the team seems hit or miss. Assumed it was a case of the wrong guys being at tge line but really looks like we might struggle there all year.
Yeah, we put them in the bonus with 15:27 left. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen that. As a coach I imagine you can’t tell your team to dial it down on defense but they really need to find a way to be smarter with their fouls.

It was really nice to see them get out in transition a bit.

Ross was huge last night but all eyes on AK and JStew injuries.

Between Demary and Smith we get a great game of assists or points and with Solo going off and Mullins quietly getting his scoring was not needed from the 1.

DePaul will be pesky but lack firepower so by then we should have AK and J Stew injury updates and if either misses the game we will see more Ross and either Reibe in with Reed or some more Koroma

Solo’s form seemed to be better to me last night. More up and down without kicking out his leg. He said he focused on defense initially without worrying about offense. I love this time of year since they can focus on hoop until the start of Spring semester. Looking for more team improvement.

Took care of business. Didn’t watch Sportscenter this morning but Jayden’s dunk was I assume #1 of the Top 10?

Donny’s comments on playing in Hartford vs playing in Gampel gave me a chuckle.

Hurley’s said a couple times now something along the lines of Braylon doesn’t really know what he’s doing in the offense and has been scoring on pure talent, which makes me think we’re gonna see him start putting out some 20+ point games in the near future as he sorts it out.
What I like is that to guard Braylon like teams have been- it leaves someone else open. Last night it was Ross. He has several open 3s. He made them pay dearly. It’s a pick your poison type of scenario w/ the depth we have.

I think running some more plays for Braylon and him learning to get open more by running more creative cuts after passing, is all he needs to start dropping 30.

Unlike most players, his issue isn’t with draining shots just getting open.

He is a star in the making.

And Ross, with his defensive intensity matched with scoring explosiveness, I don’t know how Hurley can keep him on bench.

Somebody has got to sit more and it’s not Ross. Good problem to have but challenging for the coach.

Demery I have no concerns with as long as he keeps playing so hard on Defense and racking up those assists.

Smith looked god awful last night on both sides of the ball. His shots, his free throw shooting, ball handling, nowhere to go but up. He is one player that I worry about a bit as we need him to be more dependable - especially from the FT line.

To me, one of the most enjoyable plays was Eric Reibe with the ball at the top, waving Solo to make a slash and "Bing!!" hits him with a bounce pass for a layup.

Gold.

Ring #7 comin'.
A ring this year would be sweet. It's not going to be like 23 or 24. 23 was a super weak field, and 24 we were absolutely dominant with one other dominant team out there. This year we are more like 23, but then there are another 5-6 teams out there that are legit. We'd have to beat two of them to win it.

I know it's a little early, but one can dream.

The guards are suspect on D and O? We start three guards. One of them had 26 points, another had 11 assists and shut down Bizjack, and the other had 12 points.
My observations are relative to the standard of a top 5 team vying for a championship, not beating Butler which has no chance under the sun of vying for anything but second place in the BE. Lots of turnovers and still a lot of blow by penetration . They couldn’t finish at the rim and rebounding took away a lot of extra chances for them to score.

Maybe I'm looking for something that isn't there. But I thought that Solo's release a quicker last night. Going faster means less thinking. Just letting your natural talent lead. The release seemed quicker and pure.

I have no evidence of this. There are a million tiny actions in the jump shot. I know you are not suppose to rush the shot. But sometimes quicker is better. Mullins release is lightning.

Saw the top 10 didn’t even make it but Butlers opening drive and dunk did which was surprising
