Bryant Post game thread

Congrats to Silas! 2nd triple double in the past 10 years. But...

Good things about this game:
  • It was a win
  • Silas 10-10-10
  • Reibe 16 points in 19 minutes
There were also stretches of good defense. That was about all. I get Bryant had a tough non-conference, but they are now 1-5. Kinda expected a blowout. Disappointed in Hurley's post game talking about the team "punking out" in the AZ game. Given that (IMHO) over the top reaction, can't imagine what he will say after this game.

The Bryant coach looked terrified before the game. Was practicing deep breathing before tip off lol

The good:
  • Silas triple double! Getting a Newton-type player was the goal and so far it’s been a success. Excited to see his further development
  • Malachi and Ross were defensive MENACES to start the second half
  • Reibe once again the team’s leading scorer. Not sure if that’s a good thing or bad thing, but great experience for him
  • Stewart gets a lot of heat so I try to give him credit where it’s due. He had a solid first half! Took good shots, great passes for a Ross dunk and Reibe layup (that was missed). But unfortunately inconsistency came back, as he didn’t do much in the second
The bad:
  • I had a missed layup tracker. We had 13 missed layups! Silas 4 (1 got blocked, 1 he got fouled on but it was the wide open fast break so I’m counting it), Reibe 3, Solo 3, Ross 1, Karaban 1, Koroma 1
  • Karaban and Solo were 5-22 and 2-13 from three to lead a woeful shooting night for our team. 39% FG and 20% 3P against Bryant…
  • Second half overall was zzzzzzz
But it still goes in the W column. Let’s go Huskies!!

Ball is in a crazy funk right now, he’s forcing the issue now. Defensively I thought they looked pretty good, had some nice stretches of disruptive pressure without fouling. They’ll be ready for Illinois & hopefully we have Mullins/Reed ready to go, teams need them.

these are the games Solo is supposed to work out the kinks and find his rhythm with his 3pt shot, it's starting to look bleak
Yeah, it is. We can't afford a 20% shooter from three on the floor that can't play defense. Fortunately, we have options once Mullins is back. That's the nice thing about this roster, is we have plenty of options once fully healthy. We have Malachi/Ross/Mullins to rotate to keep him off the floor if he isn't producing.
Ball, Stewart and AK as 3 starters is not the recipe
Nope, and don't want to say I told you so but I was saying this all summer. You cannot have those three guys on the floor at once, it makes for the same clunky lineup we tried last year. They all have slow feet, can't defend. You become a really stationary undynamic unit with them out there. We had a full year to watch them - you don't make a drastic leap in athletecism or foot speed, or ability to stay in front of someone.

We really have 3 plus players on this team - Tarris, Silas & Mullins. Then we have role players. We won't know what we have until 2 of those three guys are back on the floor. I do think Ross can become a plus role player throughout the year, consistently brings energy to the floor.

Best lineup down the line: Silas/Mullins/Ross/AK/Tarris. Big, best defensive unit.

Great tripledub for Silas.

I don't really take much from cupcake games especially without two starters. I already know we're super talented but we need to see this team healthy. I'm praying that happens Friday. It was a gross game but those happen sometimes in these cupcakes and this was a late Sunday start which tends to make things even uglier.

What I didn't like- Solo's three point shooting, it has been a long time since he was making threes. His overall game has improved but if he doesn't start shooting consistently from three he could lose some minutes because Silas, Malachi, Braylon, and Jayden are a lot better than him on defense...

Hurley gives AK too long a leash with what he's allowed to do on the court. We saw it last season and we see it again this season. Alex putting the ball on the floor, crashing into players and missing running layups and floaters...

Meanwhile Stewart is just always camped out in the corner. He's a much more talented player than we've seen at UConn. He still doesn't have an identity on this team and Hurley was pissed at him for blowing an assignment and he never really got back in the game.

I really hope AK goes back to playing like he did as a freshman and sophomore because he's great in that role and it's great for the team. Get open for threes, cut to the rim for layups, only drive if the lane is wide open. He can barely even put it on the floor against the cupcakes, it simply doesn't work against good teams. Hurley gives him such a long leash. He shouldn't be allowed to try and create like he does and some of the threes are just ill advised.

It's very early and we've been without two starters so hopefully that's why roles don't look as defined as they should be. If AK is still allowed to put his head down and try to create off the dribble once we're whole it will be very disappointing.

The good- Reibe. Silas getting his triple double.

Just so disappointed with the effort, especially on the offensive end. AK has 3 moves. Pop to corner, roll off screen, or catch, fake left and take a big move to the right. It’s so predictable and even a crappy squad like Bryant can completely game plan him out of a game. Shout out to Ross, Reibe, and mostly Silas for showing up tonight. Defense was there but man that was uninspiring and gives me no confidence if we are still down BM and TR against Illinois

One of my biggest fears with Hurley was giving AK too long a leash - but we just haven't had a full roster to know how he'll operate once we have Mullins/Reed back. He should be taking three shots - put backs, easy buckets off cuts and wide open threes in flow of the offense. Please, absolutely please, stop doing the weird telegraphed head fake, head down hard dribble to the awkward brick in the lane move.
