UConn 21, Towson 14. Chandler Whitmer throws 5 TD - 3 to us 2 to them. Sorry, just wanted to get started early on my Whitmer loathing.

As an FYI, guys - the spread is UConn -15. I like Towson at that number, but I do think UConn should be able to grind out a win. I suspect the passing offense starts very poorly and we shut it down and just grind out a victory behind a big day from Lyle McCombs.

All depends if MacQuillian is ready to go and 100%...if O-Line has improved at all. If no to either of those it will be a long night.

With all due respect to both you and McQuillan, if we need Sean McQuillan to be 100% in order to beat Towson, we might as well not play football this year. I'm being dead serious. I'm not sleeping on Towson, but if we aren't significantly more athletic than them in most positions on the field, something is wrong. Furthermore, it's perplexing to me why we would need a relatively untested tight end to be 100% in order to win a game against a 1-AA opponent...

That's exactly how we should hope to win this game imo.

Don't understand the hating on Whitmer. I think the INTs last season go well beyond his sole responsibility. He has the tools and if the OL comes together I think people will be very surprised what he can do.

I just saw the opening line on the game at VegasInsider. UConn -20. So I'm going 27-7.

After reading the Towson preview on the UConn blog I felt a little worried, but then I remembered that our defense will probably hold them under 150 yards of offense. I just hope P doesn't coach this game like Buffalo last year. If anything we're hoping for from TJ Weist is correct we should put up 30+. I'm feeling optimistic, and think P will let Weist take off the reigns because his job is on the line this season. UConn 38-10

I am thinking they will only show a little or just what is needed to win the game. However, remember that freakin flea flicker last year, of course that was the idiot gdl.

I swear I knew we were in trouble after that play. I was sitting there with our crew and everyone was cheering (me too) and I'm thinking "really.....we need this against UMASS".

If I recall correctly it was in the 37-0 win against unmass we learned that the oline was unable to push the our opponents d-line off the line of scrimmage. It was like that all year, so if we can run the ball I will be thrilled even if it is Towson.

That's exactly how I see it. We have to run the ball to be successful and to do that we need our OL to be able to move folks off the line of scrimmage. We do that, defenses will respect the run and Whitmer will get time to throw the ball in a balanced attach.

It is about the TE position as part of the offense especially blocking in the run game..and if macQuillian can't go you are relying on 2 true freshman..1 of which was a 2 way lineman in hs. Took a look at their roster...a fair amnt of their starters are transfers from BCS schools. This team gave LSU a run for their money in the first 1/2 last year.

I'm aware of the TE situation. But I will reiterate my position; if we require a 100% healthy McQuillan to win the game, we might as well mail in an 0-12 season. That is not to say that Towson will not require us to play good football, because they will absolutely require it. That's to say that us going with a Boland on blocking downs or with a Parker or Myers on throwing downs should be fine against Towson.

If you said to me that Whitmer was not ready to go, I would have larger concerns...

Good guys : 4 TDs, 2 FGs, and a safety. Towson : a token 2 FGs.

Most games are won or lost in the trenches. I would hope our OL pushes Towson's DL around but I'm confident our defensive front 7 will cause the deer in the headlight look in Towson's OL.

Our DT's will crush Towson's 6'1" 265 LB center and then watch our LB's come up the middle at will.

Our defense causes 4 TO's and we dominate 42-10.

The maryland beat down will begin Thursday night. Part one of two.

Funny i was at memorial for the last game in 93. Cant believe thats the last time they played.

UConn 40
Towson 10

Whitmer throws 200+ yards, 2 TD,
Lyle runs for 80+ with a TD

Huskies win in the nation's opening night... 21-14 in a closer than we think game.

UConn 31-Towson 24. Towson scores late to make it look closer than it should be as P takes his foot off the gas early and let's them back into it.

.-.
Dogs 34

Kitties 6

Towson doesn't score a TD

28-14 Late Towson score makes is seem closer than it was.

this is sort of what I think too. I had it a bit closer, but the concept is the same. I could see UConn with a comfortable lead in the mid 3rd quarter then turning to running it up the middle and punting as Towson slowly climbs back in.

28-14 dogs after a 14-14 first half.

You guys that are calling this a close game are not getting it. This hype about Towson being one of the best of FCS....it's just that....F Frickin CS....

While I don't expect Weist to tip his hand with MD and Michigan on deck, if Whitmer, Davis and Phillips can't tear it up on Towson, we are in deep trouble this year.

If this OL can't block for Whitmer or open holes for McCombs we are in deep s@@t.

If our DL can't bust through with a 265 LB center we might as well cancel the season.

Stop being afraid of success. We will have success in game one. We will dominate on defense and cause multiple TO's.

We will win this game and if it is close, come talk to me after the game. It won't be damn it.

I'll say it again. If Whitmer can't smoke these guys, we're in trouble.

art,
completely agree with you, but I have the following concerns:
1. The oline was awful last year. I need to see them improve to believe they have improved. They could not move UMass's substandard defensive line.
2. We struggled to turn teams over last year...ranked at the bottom of the country with 3 NFL d-backs and a potential All-American linebacker. I recognize that Hank isn't Brown, and I do have hope that he will change that aspect of things.
3. The offense was awful last year. I know lots of people are excited about a new guy calling plays, but I think that changing the offensive coordinator rarely changes a team. Maybe this will be one of the few times it works. Gotta see it.
4. Pasqualoni has an aggravating habit of going into a shell with the lead. He isn't going to keep the pedal to the medal well into the 4th quarter. If we have a 2- 3 td lead at halftime, he will try to milk the clock. As we saw last year with Buffalo and again with Temple, a lucky break or a busted play lets teams back into the game because of it. I don't expect that to change.

#4 is my primary pet peeve with Coach P... total meaning of playing not to lose. you end up losing when you do that.

if this happens it will be a sign TJ is not in full control of the offense. And I would be there's one large athletic director who played football at Michigan who will not be happy about it, never mind this board.

But ruskin, the decision to call off the dogs doesn't rest with the OC. That is a head coach's call. And no matter what anyone says, Weist doesn't have the authority to over rule the head coach. He makes the game plan, calls the plays, but if the head Coach says call 'em off, he calls 'em off. You can't have the offensive coordinator going against the wishes of the head coach.
