That was my first reaction. I think Stevens was being even more calculated (and I don't mean that as an insult). I think he felt a lot of loyalty to Butler. Nobody can really be upset with him leaving a mid-major (even with the new Big East affiliation) and going to the Celtics. I hate the Celts, but he's not just going to the NBA he's going to the Celtics. If it doesn't work out, Calipari, Pitino, et al. have made it clear that you can move up after stepping back down. Its a good move for Stevens, but not good for the Celtics. Stevens try's his hand at the NBA and if it doesnt work out for him he will have a ton of college jobs lined up for him. Its not as if an established NBA coach is gonna be interested in coaching in a rebuilding situation.
A blow for the new Big East.
This is a good move for both the Celtics and Brad Stevens. Its a terrible blow for Butler and the Big East. The Celtics will now probably try and trade Rondo for an expiring contract and a '14 1st rounder and Steven'll be coaching a bunch of kids in a plug and offense. The Big East loses a rising coaching star and takes a giant step toward solidifying their mid-major status. That was my first reaction. Pitino was president and dir. Of player personnel. He blames his failure in Boston on not winning the lottery (Tim Duncan) and he gave a total of 30 games to Billups before shipping him off. Stevens won't have that pressure.Pitino was 35 when he took the Knicks jib. It lasted 2 years.
He was 45 when he started at Boston. Lasted 3.5 yrs.
The overreaction on this board is hilarious, if not expected.
Stevens has shown a good ability to relate to, and develop, young talent. The Celtics are about to have a lot of young talent. If Stevens works out as an NBA coach, the C's have their guy for when they're ready to contend again, but they have plenty of time to evaluate him before that time comes.
I'm not sure I really see the downside here.
He is 36, barely older than the players.
He has never coached in the pros.
And as coach of a mid-major, he has never had to deal with elite players, high expectations, egos, and fan criticism.
