It will be interesting to see how the Stevens / Rondo thing works out.

Or is this a sign that they're willing to deal Rondo?

Wow. Bad move for pretty much everyone involved.
And Butler returns to obscurity....

Um, yeah. That's what Warde has done from day 1 - try to ruin UCONN and the UCONN family. (where's the sarcasm emoticon?). You may not like Warde and think he's a fat moron, but I hardly think there is much with regards to the UCONN MCBB team he should have done differently and therefore better.

Its a good move for Stevens, but not good for the Celtics. Stevens try's his hand at the NBA and if it doesnt work out for him he will have a ton of college jobs lined up for him. Its not as if an established NBA coach is gonna be interested in coaching in a rebuilding situation.

Read this morning where Ainge said that he was in no hurry to hire a head coach. This isn't some kind of 4th of July joke? He's been a very good college coach, but dealing with those NBA egos and incomes? Good luck. And Rondo had problems with Doc Rivers? Wow.

That was my first reaction. I think Stevens was being even more calculated (and I don't mean that as an insult). I think he felt a lot of loyalty to Butler. Nobody can really be upset with him leaving a mid-major (even with the new Big East affiliation) and going to the Celtics. I hate the Celts, but he's not just going to the NBA he's going to the Celtics. If it doesn't work out, Calipari, Pitino, et al. have made it clear that you can move up after stepping back down.

How old (or how many years coached) was Patino when he left college for the Celts?

This is a good move for both the Celtics and Brad Stevens. Its a terrible blow for Butler and the Big East. The Celtics will now probably try and trade Rondo for an expiring contract and a '14 1st rounder and Steven'll be coaching a bunch of kids in a plug and offense. The Big East loses a rising coaching star and takes a giant step toward solidifying their mid-major status.

I like the move. All too often, you have retreads in head coaching positions like Doug Collins or Vinny Del Negro or George Karl. This guy clearly has "something" about him and in a rebuilding phase, I'm not sure it's a bad gamble.

At the very least, you have to think LeBron owns the East for the next 5-7 years. Give Stevens a trial period to see if he's got what it takes and re-evaluate from there.

So who's going to be the centerpiece of the new Big East now?

It's a good move for the Celts and if they give him time there is no doubt he will be successful. Sooner or later a college coach is going to be successful in the league. I thought it might be KO in a few years. I know that's blasphemy but with all his connections and the respect he commands I can see it.

Pitino was 35 when he took the Knicks jib. It lasted 2 years.

He was 45 when he started at Boston. Lasted 3.5 yrs.

Pitino was president and dir. Of player personnel. He blames his failure in Boston on not winning the lottery (Tim Duncan) and he gave a total of 30 games to Billups before shipping him off. Stevens won't have that pressure.

The overreaction on this board is hilarious, if not expected.

Stevens has shown a good ability to relate to, and develop, young talent. The Celtics are about to have a lot of young talent. If Stevens works out as an NBA coach, the C's have their guy for when they're ready to contend again, but they have plenty of time to evaluate him before that time comes.

I'm not sure I really see the downside here.

I like it for the Celtics though it does raise some questions.

Stevens has only dealt with a few NBA players while coaching at Butler. Considering his emphasis on defense and team play, I'm not sure he will be able to sell it to some of the current Celtics roster.

Celtics current roster is all kinds of mediocre (at best):

PG: Rajon Rondo
SG: Avery Bradley (RFA)/Jordan Crawford (RFA)/Courtney Lee/MarShon Brooks
SF: Jeff Green/Gerald Wallace
PF: Brandon Bass/Kris Humphries/Jared Sullinger
C: Kelley Olynyk/Fab Melo/Colton Iverson

They need to start a rebuild quickly.

He is 36, barely older than the players.
He has never coached in the pros.
And as coach of a mid-major, he has never had to deal with elite players, high expectations, egos, and fan criticism.

I agree with all of this, however, considering what the Celtics have, who cares. He will be given time and on the job training.

They will suck for at least 2013-2014 unless they pull some amazing trade out of their butt. I'm sure they are going to give him at least a few years before they start to put pressure on him. He will have a ton less pressure than Pitino did. I think Stevens could be like Thibs in Chicago once he gains some experience.
