Bowl Opt Out Tracker

.-.

This is why you see college coaches go to the NFL to be assistants. It’s not worth the headaches that this guy describes. I’m all for the players getting what they deserve monetarily. However, if they’re going to insist on having bowl games, then these kids should be expected to play.

We can say get rid of the bowls and as much as I hate to see it happen, it’ll happen soon. However, I could see players start sitting out of end of regular season games too if they start getting the same tampering that always happens.

Until they figure out how to control this, it’s going to awful for the team and the fans. It’s not just the players too. The coach situation needs to figure itself out also.

The way it gets controlled is Congress recognizing a huge industry is eating itself alive. I’d start with no portal until Jan 15. No NIL offer may be made before January 15 or after March 15. If any contact is made outside the period, the offending school, its head coach and any agent are each liable for 10x the NIL amount to be paid and the athlete forfeits the money. Watch how fast it stops. This is our game, our tradition and it needs to be protected.

I would create a rule that states you only get 2 transfers unless there's a coaching change and that NIL funds are tied to academic progress from your previous year.

They also have to cap NIL, either the aggregate or the individual level.

NIL should not be capped. If someone is benefiting off your Name, Image or Likeness you should be compensated. It has nothing to do with play and isn't tied to their work on the field. Other payments, whether its a "paycheck" or "signing bonus", should be capped.

That's fair, but that should be a separate pool. One for your actual playing time, and another separate pool for actual use of NIL.

Not everyone that signs an NIL is going to get jersey sales, that's not the point, but you can separate these funds and you can do it in a manner that allows for caps

Most schools have started classes by January 15th. Most appear to be starting January 12th, some earlier. Tough to get "student athletes" on campus for spring classes when the portal doesn't open until January 15th.

I don’t think you should cap it per player but maybe per team. I’m not sure how you determine this because there are such a wide variety of teams and resources. However, this Wild West of spending will quickly result in it being the same 10 teams heading to the playoffs every year. Many of these SEC and some B1G schools basically have unlimited NIL funds. If you find a way to cap that, it forces them to have to limit who they can give what to. All of a sudden, they can’t have every top player because they can pay 6 figure deals. This doesn’t hurt the players. They’ll still make their money.

Like I said, I don’t know how you determine this because you can’t have the same cap for Alabama that you have for UConn. Heck, you can’t have the same cap for Alabama than you have for Kentucky.
