Borges: UConn potentially looking at hosting low-major MTE?

Yeah seems like the right model to maximize revenue, but also pretty pointless. I'm guessing this is why NCAA is looking to streamline schedules and remove the MTE "loophole" and just give all teams more games.

Syracuse men bought in a few more athletes, but they brought in a group that has worst defensive metrics that could rival last year‘s team. They might be able to score a bit more but they won’t be able to stop anybody.

Yeah but the Norteastern loss led to UConn hiring their head coach so I'd call that a major win. :)
Yes, Toner wanted to move on from Perno and hire Calhoun in the spring of '85 but he couldn't get enough support from the administration to fire Perno. He basically told JC that he could help the cause in the Connecticut Mutual Classic. They pretty much ran us out of the gym.

Not sure that’s true vs a complete coincidence but I’ll let you have it

For those that remember, our first choice was actually Nick McKarchuck
Imagine if that had happened instead of hiring Calhoun? Ugh!

I just remember Toner saying he was impressed by Calhoun when Northeastern beat UConn in that Connecticut Mutual Classic and that helped convince him to hire Calhoun. Did it really? I can't find much evidence of it. It was a long time ago.

In fact, Calhoun had led Northeastern to a 90-73 thumping of UConn in the Connecticut Mutual Classic that previous December. UConn athletic director John Toner sat at the scorers’ table for that game and apparently liked what he saw from the 43-year-old crazy man on the opposing sidelines.

“I think it impressed him, how hard his kids played,” noted Chardis, the longtime UConn beat writer for the J-I who is now the sports information director for UConn men’s hoops.

They actually appear to be recruiting a little better. Let's see how Red develops the talent.

Not sure he will have a ton of time to develop talent. He's in year three this coming year. In the first two he is barely 500. Basically as bad as Kim English has been in arguably a worse conference.
