Borges: Is Providence College becoming heated rival for UConn men’s basketball team? Depends on who you ask

“Not when you’re at UConn,” he (Hurley) stated. “With the history of this place, and the brand and notoriety and respect with the four national championships and all the NBA players, one of the greatest coaches of all time (Jim Calhoun), and everything that’s gone on with women’s basketball … every game, you feel like it’s the other team’s Super Bowl.”

Asked specifically about Providence, Hurley still wouldn’t budge.

“St. John’s feels like a rival, Seton Hall feels like a rival,” he noted. “I think everyone in your conference feels like a rival. For UConn, it’s different, because of the brand. It doesn’t have anything to do with any of us that are coaching or playing here right now. We weren’t a part of all that success. But every game for us feels like a rivalry game, because we get everyone’s ‘A’ game every night.”

Stated differently, people hate us.

The old Big East hated us because we went from perennial cellar dwellers and a source for Big East Tournament tickets to Top Gun, and we never looked back

The new Big East hates us because of the limelight we steal from them. Places like Creighton think they're the better program, but we get the love.

Not going to change, especially with Jay. Wright retiring

They are in decent shape to become more of a rival. But yeah, Dan is right, without Syracuse we don't really have one.

.-.
PC who? Seriously there is no bad blood here. We barely know they are in New England. They will need a few more good years and perhaps take a few more players before a rivalry is even discussed

The forcing of this UCONN-Providence rivalry narrative is funny. Nova is our main rival in the Big East, everyone else is everyone else. Creighton has more of a chance at being a temporary rival than Providence.

We need to reestablish yearly out-of-conference games with our main rival Syracuse.

Once Capel gets fired from Pitt, and they hire a new coach, we should also look at scheduling Pitt as well.

Syracuse and Pitt were our 2 main rivals.

The games aginst Nova were most rivalry-like. But that was really fueled by two teams at at the top of the table, a meaningful game. Not history, which is what makes a rivialry. Historically, we have much more history with URI. And we have their coach.

Come on man, URI. Providence is not a rival, but URI is and will always be a meaningless game worse than any game with Providence. Going by your logic, that must mean Northeastern is more of a rival than other schools because Calhoun came from there.

Providence and URI are each others rival.

UCONN's rival is Syracuse. After that, Pitt is our 2nd main historical rival. Nova is tied for 2nd with Pitt for now, but a lot will depend on what happens post Jay Wright at Nova.

We should look to have a yearly out-of-conference schedule of Syracuse and Pitt(after Capel gets fired and they hire a decent coach).

I stand by the sentence. Historically, we have much more history with URI. We do have more history with URI. That is simply a fact. By the way Hurley used to be their coach. Not saying they are a rival. Just noting that PCU is not really even the best candidate for a rival in the state.

But PC is, by far, the best candidate in the state. Sure, history is part of the equation, and one might be able to argue that UConn has more history with URI than with PC, but I doubt you'll find one person on the Boneyard who agrees with you that URI is a bigger rival to UConn right now than PC is.

I don’t see the old rivalries from the old BE as valid anymore. Going forward I see us developing rivalries with NBE teams going forward. Creighton, Villanova and yes, even PC if they continue to be good. Losing 5 in a row to Creighton hurts! That’s what makes rivalries. Does anyone really give a crap about Syracuse anymore? And Pitt….really? I don’t.

He didn't say URI is a rival. I think he's saying if Providence is a rival, then URI is too, and therefore, neither are rivals. We do have much more history against URI. It doesn't matter today because we're literally and figuratively out of their league. But we've played URI more than we've played Providence, and we both came from the Yankee conference.

What? lol. It is a good thing that that game will generate buzz, I don't know why it is so hard for you to admit.
I think you're a bit confused what the discussion is then, I'm sure there will be buzz for the game because it's 2 local teams. What I'm saying is I wouldn't consider PC a rival

In all seriousness, I can't remember a very important Providence / UConn game in years. I can think of huge games with Pitt, Syracuse, Villanova, Miami, St. Johns, Georgetown, Cincinnati... but there's not a "Providence - UConn" moment. When was the last time they played a game in the later rounds of the Big East tournament?

When I think of UConn - Providence games the two that come to mind are Jim Calhoun blowing up over Ryan Gomes (and I couldn't even tell you if Providence or UConn did anything the rest of that year) and the final game of Ollie's first year when Napier was hurt but they won at Gampel vs. Providence.
