Borges: Andre Jackson is ‘so ready’ to begin his UConn MBB career

“The thing that makes him the winner that he is, not only is he dynamic in transition, but he passes the ball, puts the ball in guys’ hands. He feels that if (James) Bouknight can get five open looks or (Jalen) Gaffney gets open looks, that ball’s gonna be on his hands. He’ll draw the double-team and give it up. And if the double-team doesn’t come, he’ll score it. He plays the right way. There’s not a selfishness in his game. He just plays to win, and he’s aware.”

Hurley and Tom prioritized Andre all summer even though he was practically a lock. That says something about how they feel about him as a player.

We are going to have great team speed.. If we can combine open spacing with great ball movement..Everyone will get their touches and points... I think RJ will be open for jumpers if the ball rotation comes back his way after the first pass or two..from Bouk and AJ.. As Dickie V would say.." Lob City..Baby"

Calhoun talked about speed towards the end of his career. He said Carolina always emphasized athleticism, dook emphasized skill and he emphasized speed.

Dude..We have some Roadrunners..If you've got the Rock (rebounding) Then you can Roll.

If he is supremely athletic, a great passer, and shoots over 40% from 3, why was he not a Top 30 recruit?
247 still has him ranked outside of the top 100! After dominating playing a national schedule, shooting 45% from 3, winning NY state player of the year. The knock is that he’s just an athlete but he’s proved that he has serious ball skills as well. Not just his improved shooting his passing, his play making, his IQ, his leadership. Makes absolutely no sense to me.

He wasn't shooting 40 % until after he signed with us!! New development..Wants to be Pistol Pete per him..

JC, so the story does, while riding in an elevator at halftime of the 2014 championship game, supposedly said we will win because we are quicker ( or faster, there is a difference) and in better shape.

I hesitate to say this because the overall point is true and Jackson was highly underrated, but take the 3P% with context, Gilbert was at 54% his senior year. I think he'll be competent from 3 which opens a ton of doors for him but he's not going to be a knockdown shooter, at least right away

JC and Dan Hurley..By virtue of not having Bag Men..Have to recruit a different way .. They have to recruit under the radar guys with huge upside.. They have both been tremendously successful with this strategy..Enjoy the Ride!!

Gilbert was a superstar before he came here. Injuries made him a role player.

Yeah not meant as a shot at Gilbert or Jackson. More a reminder that the translation from HS to college 3 point shooting isn't exactly linear

The shooting is new. And he can't shoot off the dribble. He barely shot at all until this high school season--our coaches likely got in his ear about developing that ability. He is extremely TO prone.

But he is also underrated. High hops, defensive potential, and passing ability at 6'7 are legit.

There's no way anyone actually believes he shot 45%.
That's why I feel compelled to bring it up every time, the HS 3 point line is shorter and he's 6'8. It definitely happened, but just to try and temper expectations that he's not going to come here and disappoint by only shooting 30% next year

HS line is shorter, and he took very limited attempts almost exclusively off the catch. It may not be 45%, but it also might not be *that* bad. I think I'd be happy if he can make 30-32% a game next season off the catch. Not great (at all), but could be a base to build from. What I don't want is him taking almost no threes all season and never getting a lick of confidence for the rest of his career. Let him jack them against the cupcakes early and dial it in for conference play.

Agree. In addition to the 3 point line being significantly deeper - the speed of the college game, the pressure (fear of being yanked from the game), and the guys you are playing against make a big difference. He will be playing against guys who can actually contest and block his shot and are much quicker to close out. Also, AJ won't be playing 30 minutes per game so he won't be in as much of a flow or have as much confidence shooting the 3 as he would in the high school setting.

Me personally, I shot probably 10% lesser of a percentage in college than I did HS. For those reasons too...

Quite frankly, he’s a very bright kid. Andre is so right, you can’t be a team leader if you don’t know where you are suppose to be on the court. Additionally, as Chief has said before, he’s very unselfish and respects the game.
I am sure even the most casual of our beloved Casual Fans recognize the amazing athleticism we will have at two positions next season. While that gives us amazing potential next season, the thing that will make Jackson great is that potential combined with being a true student of the game who can talk basketball with those he can learn from.

A reminder that Alterique also had ups in HS that I don't recall seeing from him at UConn, especially with the number of times he failed going to the hoop. In HS he dunked in traffic. I've often wondered if he had more injuries than the shoulder. Jackson I think will translate to UConn and be the same player as Bouknight. He'll make 3's in the flow of the game taking 2-3 a game. I have seen most of the players ranked above Jackson including top 10 Terrence Clarke a bunch (at least 10x in person). In the 10x I have seen Clarke I don't think he's had even 1 game better than what I've seen personally from Jackson in the 3x I've seen him. I do think he is very under rated. I'm also not worried about turnovers being a problem.
