Blanca & trainers

Is this session from before she came to Storrs? The coach speaks to her in English but with a heavy Italian accent and there’s a Molisanos banner on the wall.

The attention to this one detail is impressive.

Blanca just needs a little patience when she has the ball. Don't force it. When she steals the ball there is no way she is stopping to see if a teammate is open for as 3. Like a frieight train. Any of you who have watched Paiges Wings games can attest that Areke does the same thing, and it is rarely successful. Be patient and scan the floor. This past year we have had so many steals that should be layups, but having tunnel vision on the break has resulted in a lot of misses. Be patient little one, you can be one of the best.

After Blanca came back from missing games mid/late season, she improved her drive and dish and was pretty good dumping off to Azzi and Sarah. She definitely needs a drive with a stop and pop shot, but boy her ability to drive around folks is amazing.

Yep. Exactly this. We've seen this with a lot of Connecticut guards over the years. The first instinct is to attack. Mo Jefferson comes to mind on the woman's side as does Taliek Brown (who now is an assistant coach at St. John's under Pitino) on the men's side.

From what I have seen with Blanca this past season and her potential for the coming season, I will commit blasphemy and say she will make fans forget Azzi graduated. Azzi will ALWAYS be regarded as one of Uconn's best, but life goes on and Uconn goes on. With Jovana and Olivia on the team, Uconn's future looks secure. GO JOVANA AND OLIVIA!!!!!! GO HUSKIES!!!!

Some good posts. I laughed when someone brought up Jefferson as a comparison. Going into her 2nd year Jefferson wasn't an AA yet. her outside shot wasn't developed and she still drove into double teams with her head down. (not unlike Big Fish) My memory isn't great but I think she became "Mo Jeff" in the 2nd semester of her sophomore season. One other thing. Mo was 5'7". Quinonez is 6'3". People who played with Charles say she was only 6'3, not her listed 6'4. Think about that. Quinonez is a unicorn. She missed the entire strength and conditioning session last year wasn't on campus until last September. Geno admitted that she didn't understand the system. He said that she played on instincts and all he asked her to do was be aggressive. That partly explains why her 1st move was always to get to the hoop instead of looking to pass. That doesn't bother me. Coming out of the Euro system she is well-schooled in team skills. We saw some brilliant passes. And some that were a bit over-optimistic. To me the key was that unlike most UConn freshmen, pass wasn't her go-to move when she had the ball.

Quinonez is an immense talent. She also seems driven to get better. Think back to being 13. (need a telescope?). Now imagine agreeing to leave your home, your school, your friends and spend 5 years learning basketball. (I had trouble focusing for 5 minutes at that age). I don't think she needs any advise or pep talk from me. I just feel incredibly lucky that she plays for my team.
