Yusef Lateef was one of the pioneers of world music. This one is from the 50's:

 
Hopefully this is okay, only front man Darius Rucker is black. Their first album was huge. I thought they put out some quality stuff w/ subsequent albums, but it didn't really catch on. Darius had a decent run as a solo artist as well, I think he went more country.

King Curtis was the man on the horn on many a record back in the day as we say. A most wonderful soulful and smooth player. He had it all.
