Bill Murray’s Son, Luke, Is a College Basketball Coaching Candidate North Carolina State

You’d rather he get VCU or George Mason than NC State? Seriously? NC State may not have the brand of Carolina or Duke but they are certainly a major program. 30 NCAA appearances, 4 Final Fours, 2 National Championships. A program that is more successful in its history than every Big East team except UConn and Villanova. Plays in a P4 conference. Why do you hate Luke Murray?
If his goal is to coach one of the top programs in the future, consistently winning at NC St. is going to be hard in the ACC. The last NC St. men's basketball coach to not be fired was Norm Sloan who left in 1980 due to a salary dispute with the AD. There have been 5 head coaches since Jim Valvano was forced out in 1990 and none of them had a career winning record in the ACC and Valvano was 71-69.

How many programs outside the blue bloods haven’t had 5 or more coaches in the last 35 years? With Luke, NC State has the potential to become the third best program in the ACC behind UNC/Duke. A job outside the P4 is not appealing anymore with NIL and revenue sharing about to start. Getting NC state as your first HC gig is a home run for anybody.

The last 5 coaches over the past 35 years have had losing records in the ACC and they were all fired. At best, 3rd best program in their own state and the job is not better than Louisville or Syracuse. What has changed to make the job easier?

In the college basketball world, Bill Murray introduces himself as Luke Murray's father.

Maybe Luke is/will be a better coach than them?? And so what, they’ve always been the third best program in the state but that didn’t stop them from winning 2 chips

The vcu coaches are all successful since shaka. Nc state is a tough place to win. If he fails at nc state might not get another shot as head coach

It’s not about which programs had a lot of coaches, it’s about which programs has a lot of coaches who got fired. Coaches leave mid majors because they got a promotion. If you take the NC State job you have to crush it from day 1 or you are going to get canned. You have to be able to immediately get in there and sign up a good team from the portal. Usually you also need some players you were already recruiting to your current program to follow you to the job to be successful.

Unfortunately, this is the natural evolution for a top coach (talking about Durley). I suspect he’ll have an amazing coaching tree when all is said and done.

I’m not so sure I see Kimani or Luke leaving for a mid major job. They’ve had to have gotten offers already at the low power 4 + ACC level (much less any mid major), but just holding out for the right job. NC State is a good situation for Luke, I mean he can win 20 games in that bad league easy with even scrubs on the court in that offense. And probably get ranked doing so with how overrated the league is. I hope he doesn’t pursue, but would be happy for him if he did get the job.

He honestly should be a top candidate for the Indiana job, but thank goodness they’re obviously gonna get one of Stevens/Jay Wright/Billy Donovan/John Wooden instead.

No aspiring coach with balls is choosing to go to a mid major over NC St

A coach that wants to win would also go to VCU.

VCU has been to 7 of the last 10 tournaments (including this year, assuming they get in), spanning 4 different coaches. 3 of the 4 made the dance and then eventually jumped to better jobs than NC State. NC State only 4 appearances in the same timeframe.

I disagree with bendm, and the thing you're missing is taking a mid-major and doing well can lead to a GREAT job. If Murray doesn't think NC ST is a GREAT job, but thinks he can crush it at a stepping stone like A-10 or a step lower, then he's in line for a monster job in 3-5 years.

So it's not as clear cut as "NC State is a bigger job than VCU."

That was before revenue sharing. Midmajors are toast. I’m worried the BE is toast.

I think he can turn it back into a great job. It’s not BC they have multiple chips in the trophy caseZ

The pressure to invest revenue sharing in football will be intense at the P4 and especially the P2 schools. VCU has come out and said they will pay their teams $5 million in revenue sharing with most going to men's basketball as they don't have football. That should be competitive with the P4.

NC State is an excellent basketball gig. Highly doubtful Murray is getting this as his first HC job.

NC State would be an excellent first gig. I hope he stays, but if they offer, he almost has to take it.
Terrible right now. Coach ran out the door even under investigation. ACC champs + Final 4<NIL. They have no money. No interest from any recruits. Our guys are either waiting their turn at UConn or going to a blue blood.

Seems like most of the great coaches started someplace less fancy, honed their craft then took the big job and crushed it.

I know the won a title but it is a very hard job. A dead end for virtually everyone who coached there.
He would have to last that long, but UVA is going to be called up to the B1G leagues while NC State is going to be stuck in AAACC. That prospect might free up some additional capital to invest in DMV prospects (it isn't as if the university's athletic performance demands inclusion in a super conference, outside of women's swimming).

I admit to not knowing everything that went into firing Keatts, but damn... dude just went to the FF last year. I think that's like a textbook definition of "fickle".
NC State was 15-15 entering the 2024 ACC Tournament and would not have made the NCAAs without winning it. The Final Four quite literally saved his job.

A10 is a decent basketball league and VCU has good fan support/revenue and no football. I think they'll have similar NIL to NC State for basketball players. They've pledged to spend 400k on average per player to its roster. NC State will have roughly 3 million for basketball revenue sharing (plus whatever other NIL still exists on top), which will probably work out to a similar number.
