It's not recruiting that's the problem. We've reverted to a passive defensive scheme and the discipline and organization of our team is awful. We can't get plays off without chaos before the snap and we can't even manage the clock. A great coach can win 9 games next year with this group.
I will disagree slightly on that.......it is noticeable that this years defense lacks a ton of speed and size........front line is not as solid and the linebackers are decent but Moore was really good, as was the DLine.........young backs too..........they need more impact players on both sides of the ball on the line.........McCombs was really good with a line but w/0 he's a one tackle and down guy.........this team has no reason to be on the same field as Michigan and they aren't all that good. Many UConn teams in the last few years could have competed with this Bog Blue team but not a PP team.........
It is very difficult to know how good these kids are because the coaches care very little about teaching them the details that make all the difference. For instance, Pruitt has great size for a DE, and in fact his size may be a reason why he doesn't have the quickness to rush the passer from the edge. But what is glaring about his play was a complete inability to set the edge on outside runs. It is galling to see a player with his size (much bigger than your prototypical college DE) unable to set the edge. This is not a talent problem. It's a coaching problem. much smaller and weaker players do it.
Unless Uconn was deathly afraid of funneling runners up the middle toward linebackers like Smallwood, I see absolutely no reason why they would take an advantage (big DTs and DEs who may be slow, but they have bulk) and create a disadvantage. Maryland was running free on the edges all day long for huge gains.
I'm not local anymore and haven't been to a game this year to see these guys for myself. My friends that have season tickets and go watch practice now and then tell me that the size and athleticism looks better than ever. Even Rob Lunn has mentioned that the players look bigger and faster than they were when he was there. I think it is coaching that is the problem. Our guys are always confused and scrambling to get set. If they are losing one step due to coaching and execution, guys with the details down---like Edsall's players, will look a lot faster.
It is amazing how much bigger, faster and stronger a well coached player with some fire in his belly looks. These guys have no aggression, no urgency and no idea what they are doing. Just a mess.

I guess Akron must be a really good team, eh??
It's not about the athletes, Pasqualoni is seriously the worst coach I've ever seen. It's criminal that he and GDL are running our football team.
