Big East OOC thread '25/'26

Remember when everyone, including the Big East coaches, thought Creighton and Marquette were going to be good? Ugh, they both aren't looking so hot.

Nova just beat Pitt by 18.

Remember when Pitt fans were adamant that they always preferred Capel over Hurley? Good times.
A client of mine gave me mid court tickets to this one so I took my 5 year old today. He’s never been to Finneran.

Just cracked a beer and am hoping to watch Seton Hall smoke Rutgers right now.

Bold prediction: McDermott will announce he is retiring from Creighton before the season ends. He can’t be enjoying this

Something is wrong with that team. This is two games in a row where Creighton looks like it doesn’t care. Lack of effort is toxic, and needs to be dealt with immediately.

Does Seton Hall not believe in screens?
They beat us a few years ago with Kadary Richmond just taking turns roasting us one on one. It was a pick-free win. But a different coaching staff and different roster back then.

I do because I want the best for us. It is not good that we don’t play another game that help us advance until February. Every game we play from now until then can really only hurt us. That is not good.
Tell Hurley not to lose any games. The reality is if we lose a game to Villanova, Seton Hall or Butler, it'll help them a heck of a lot more than it'll hurt us.

Love to be a 1 seed. Thats not why we have the conference though. It is going to be the laboratory where we work out the kinks both individually and teamwise, in order to be ready to go come March. If we are a 2 instead of 1, it won't be ideal, but we would probably be the strongest 2 against the weakest 1 of the 4, and we would have had to beat them anyway(as a 2). Very confusing I'm sure, but makes sense to me.

Lets play some Big East games. Go Huskies!

Is the biggest concern that we lose seeding strength(weak SOS) or that our quality of play will be dumbed down?

Seems like SOS is pretty good given our OOC gauntlet.

SJU is very athletic with guys mostly in between 6-4 and 6-7. They are switching on every screen on defense and forcing 1-on-1 play.

Hopkins looks slimmer and quicker. I don't know about his perimeter shooting ability if that has improved.
Hopkins was a nemesis at PC. I expect no less now that he is playing for Rickey. Weight loss should help the knee and his chances at the next level. Great competitor. Wish him all the best except when he plays us.

It is a liability for us to be in the big east. It is far and away the worst of the power 5. Where am I wrong?

We play several teams where fans both in Connecticut, and elsewhere in the Northeast can attend road games.
We don’t wear out the players (and coaches) with extensive travel.
Our conference tournament is at a great venue within easy reach to most fans.
We don’t overly dilute our finite resources trying to compete in the nuclear arms race that is college football (ducks and runs for cover - but its true)

If being in the Big East is such a liability, why has no other conference won more in the last ten years?

If you think this is good, I don’t know what to tell you. We should be in a league with better teams. This is not good enough.

We have a thread demonstrating how awed some on here are with Michigan (who evidently would barely be underdogs to the 1997 Bulls) and quite a few that with different approaches, are displaying a massive amount of apprehension over what our seeding may be in this springs tournament (evidently unless we are a top two seed, a championship run won't be possible).

I'll say it again, our fanbase is soft.

As far as the other schools in our conference:

There was a time (it lasted many decades) when in any non-conference matchup I would always want the BE school to win. I would want the BE to always be clearly the strongest and deepest conference in the country and if we didn't win it all, I wanted another BE school to do so.

That changed over time when for many years from around our first title through our third, the appearance was that outside of Villanova, every non-football member was happy cashing checks while pretending to put an effort into fielding a competitive program. Then, during the last season of the BE as many knew it, we weren't allowed to play in the conference tournament. Their actions from the split to our return have made it clear that this is nothing more than a business transaction.

I can live with that. I've been in the business world for nearly 45 years, I understand it well and know how to react to any situation. As far as our conference goes, we need to take care of what we can take care of. If other schools do well, great, but we still need to do what we need to do. If they don’t do well, too bad for them but we still need to do what we need to do.

The good things about this conference are the locations of the conference tournament and the proximity of a handful of schools. When the day arrives that we are elsewhere, I may miss the Garden but that's about it.

.-.
If anyone thinks this situation is better than playing Houston, Iowa State, and Texas Tech or Louisville, UVA, and UNC in conference you’re not being honest with yourself.

This is not the old big east and it isn’t fun to play bad teams for 3 months out of the season.
