Big East meetings today down in Florida: No Boeheim, no Jamie Dixon, no Bob Huggins. Pitino and Calhoun also not there.

You'd think Pitino and Calhoun would be there.

Are any basketball coaches there? It seems like a meeting that would be for ADs or Presidents....not for basketball coaches. Or is this just a way to create a headline and story by saying that "so and so isn't there" despite the fact that no basketball coaches are expected to be there?

Why Florida? It's freaking steaming hot in the northeast!

If the rumors of FSU, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, etc leaving are true, you wonder who will raid who in retaliation. You would argue that the Big East would be in a better spot than the ACC after those teams leave. But it may go the other way (ACC raiding the BE) just so that the football schools can shed the basketball onlies and the new additions (Memphis, Temple, etc).

It will be the latter. Duke, UNC, etc. have no interest in being in a conference with the schools the Big East recently added if it can be avoided. And it can be.

For all predicting dire fates for the Big East, reps from NBC and Fox were here. Big East, despite geography, still being courted.
Nobody wants to be stuck in a cluster duck of a conference. Especially UConn & Rutgers. Guess what, in it's entirety, the BE is soon to be a cluster duck of a conference.
Then again, isn't that what you wished for us

Is this question directed at me? If so, no I don't want it to be a cluster f. But it has been for years. The BB schools sealed their fate of being stuck with a bunch of crappy schools after UConn leaves by not breaking off before.

Yeah, the question is definately directed to you FriarJ. Back in the fall, when Syracuse & Pitt left, you stated, on PC's board, that you hope UConn & Rutgers get stuck in a cluster f of a conference.
Basically you got your wish. The way the BE will be next year it will be a cluster f... of a conference.
You got your wish. Only, I doubt this particular cluster F of a conference is what you wished for.
Somehow, and I'm not sure how, but PC will end up in a strong hoops led conference. I don't know what this conference will be called. Meanwhile UConn, RU, Louisville & Cinn will be elsewhere. (probably an ACC B-12 combo) The remainder of the "new" BE football schools will scramble elsewhere. Notre Dame will do what's best for ND.
When this finally happens everybody will be happy. But only until then.

Yikes!! I can barely remember what I posted yesterday! :D

Well, there is passion and then there is common sense. as for RU they can rot in conference purgatory forever for all I care. In regards to UConn my stance has softened quite a bit from the #begharder days and the combined hits both these schools have absorbed over the last 3 years or so, (outside of the Kemba led run to the NC, obviously).

I cannot for the life of me understand why the basketball schools are sticking this out when it is proven that not one football school or President of any football school in the conference can be trusted. The BB schools have said yes everytime to expansion and all we have is a giant mess to show for it. It has done nothing to keep one FB school around. Now when you leave, we are stuck with UCF, USF, Memphis, SMU, and Houston as conference BB mates fighting over the BE name. What a show

Geno is there.

Geno Auriemma said he's been careful not to criticize outgoing Big East schools. "Your president could do the same thing tomorrow."

ouch - Looks like NBC will be our new home.

I respect you FriarJ for coming over here and making sense and not throwing ;balls at us like most of the friar faithful.

In reality, FriarJ, the FB schools & hoops only schools have little in common anymore. With UConn, RU, Cinn. & Louisville, most assume either the ACC and/or the B-12 will eventually come calling.
When this happens, PC, SJU, SHU, Nova, G'town, Marquette, probably Temple for hoops only, probably DePaul, will join some A-10 teams. Butler, VCU, XAVIER & DAYTON. possibly URI & UMass too. That's a pretty good hoops conference.
ND will remain independant until NBC cancels their football contract. If they keep this contract they just might stay in the same conference, for hoops, with you guys. That's not a bad conference.
What hoops only schools must worry about is if 65-75 top FB & Hoops teams decide to split from the NCAA and form their own super FB & Hoops association. This is what UConn's old AD, Lew Perkins warned us about 15+ years ago. He said in order to protect UConn hoops, we needed to move to D-1 in FB.
After all of these years nobody can say Lew was 100% right. But, nobody can say he was wrong either. One way or the other, UConn, fortunately remains in the discussions within any potential larger picture.
