Sleeping Giant. Providence has nowhere to go. Did you watch the city go nuts over a Loyola NCAA run. That's a fraction of what a DePaul run would do. Yep, it's a long way from Mark Aquirre and Terry Cummings. They drew 4,300 per this year. G'town drew 5,800.

As my broker told me. Pass performance does not guarantee future results.

Why would Loyola Chicago (who by the way happens to have a national title) be a fraction with their run of what DePaul could do?

To give you an idea of how long adopting Aguirre & Cummings were, I was in college when they played for DePaul, Cummings last game was a tournament loss to BC when BC was regularly getting to the sweet 16 (BC made the elite eight that year). When Cummings played his last game, the combination of UNC, Duke, UConn, Villanova and Florida had one national title.

DePaul's best case scenario would be a good bandwagon following when they're consistently good.
 
would be nice to see Seton Hall clip St Johns on Friday for their Senior Night but after Saturday's loss I could easily see the bottom falling out for them to end the season

If DePaul and Loyola were both good DePaul would be a much bigger deal than Loyola in Chicago. DePaul is much more the city school and they have the Big East.

Futility is the only thing that's kept DePaul from being like Marquette.

I'm pretty confident that I'm about 15 years older than you.

I googled back to the very early 1970's following college basketball, remember Al McGuire as Marquette's head coach, Ray Meyer as DePaul's. I've seen Marquette when they were at their best and DePaul at their best, post George Mikan.

There is no way in hell to compare DePaul's following to Marquette's, even with the massive difference in sizes of the cities they reside in.

DePaul's best outcome would be as a B level version of St John's, a nice following when, and only when they are winning.

I answered your question on DePaul and Loyola. DePaul outdrew Marquette in the 80's.

1) We actually score quite a bit more in the paint than our competitors. This maps to (a) our very good interior defense (metrics-wise) for limiting close 2pt buckets AND more importantly, making them miss 2Pt paint shots at a higher-than-average rate, and (b) our offense which focuses on high quality looks from 3pt and close to the rim. Many of our 2pt paint shots are not contested so no fouls are possible.

2) We foul the other team's players when they are in the paint a lot. Thus the ~100 more FTs attempted.

We have the 4th-best (lowest) opponent 2Pt% at the rim, 5th best 2Pt% overall. Teams shoot very low #'s of 3pt shots vs. us (35% of all shots in a given game...we are elite in limiting 3pt shot attempts.) The trade-off is that in selling out for limiting 3pt attempts, we let a lot of drives occur. But again, we are elite at rim-protection, with the side effect of fouling more and putting teams at the line more.

Marquette nearly fell off the map in the 80's and if DePaul outdrew them in that decade, it was likely due to two or three seasons that were am aberration. They'll never see 14k season tickets again.

Look at what Marquette draws. Look at Creighton and Xavier. Compare those midwest schools fan support with DePaul. It's comparing fans who truly care about the program vs fans who will go to games to see a top program, but will lose no sleep if the program disappears.

DePaul outdrew Marquette for 8 straight seasons. It's okay to defer to someone who knows a lot more about the city and school than you do.

This is beyond dopey, we all know DePaul has drawn terribly for a long time because they've been unbelievably bad at basketball. It doesn't mean they won't draw again if and when they're good again, they will.

DePaul use to crush those teams. Twice they were #1 in the nation at the end of the season. Yes, they have fallen a long way. Losers never have big crowds or big press. But they were once the prince of the city

High school basketball is huge in Chicago. The state tournament was called "March Madness" in the 1930s, long before that was a national phrase. If Holtmann can keep a few of those guys home and lift DePaul off the floor, they will be media darlings in the City of Big Shoulders.

Let's look at the first decade of this century. I know that for at least the bulk of that decade DePaul was at worst reasonably competitive (they were in iur path in the '04 tournament). What was their attendance in comparison to Marquette's for that decade.

I know you live in Chicago. I also know that with a lot of the programs in this conference you try to make believe that there is more to them than there really is.

DePaul is closer to being BC than they are to being a program that could draw without demonstrating sustained success.

UConn may win the BE regular season title and the number 1 BE tourney is seed before they take the court for the final game of the regular season.

On the downside, watching this MSG game requires listening to Fanta talk about his Bill Cosby sweater.
