Big East Job Rankings - Anonymous Poll

You missed the point. They don’t care. Harvard’s alumni base has deep pockets, too. Both use their access to money for things other than building basketball programs. DWFHoya and I are saying the same thing.

Ahh. This is a thread about a couple of message board posters speaking for an entire fanbase's thinking. Ok. Georgetown alumni's alleged lack of investment in the program is one of those things that is true until it isn't. In a world with rapidly increasing payroll costs for players, I would rather have rich fans than poor fans, but maybe that is just me.

It is worth noting that Cooley has a big contract and the current roster was not that cheap. Cooley is just a mediocre coach that seems to be getting worse as he gets older.

"even though it’s in the middle of nowhere."

So weird that people always try and perpetuate that. Its so close to everything. A slightly secluded campus actually makes for a nice experience.

It is also worth noting Cooley has a big contract because of a University president who had hired the past two coaches to large contracts. A new president with no previous ties to Georgetown (and by extension, Georgetown basketball) arrives July 1.

I mean alumni with deep pockets is helpful, but someone still has to prove they can tap into that. Clearly from that starting 5, they’re not exactly rolling in the NIL funds right now. They’ve got a couple of good guys and then a huge drop off.

Admittedly this is totally unscientific but I’ve got a few good friends that are Georgetown alumni and interact semi-regularly with 10ish or so grads through them. One of them kind of follows the team (watches a few games a season and has a general sense of how they’re doing). The rest of them I would bet money cannot name one coach or player, past or present. Completely apathetic to the program. That culture is hard to change.

I'm surprised Marquette is so high. It seems Marquette, Creighton, and Providence are very similar in terms of job quality. Similar resources in similar sized markets. Marquette competes with pro franchises in Milwaukee plus the University of Wisconsin, Creighton competes with Univ of Nebraska, Providence has the pro franchises in Boston -- all are the top college program in their local market, but Marquette has relatively more competition. Marquette's history is good but not dramatically better than Providence's -- 3 Final Fours vs 2 for Providence, Marquette 3coaches or players in the Hall of Fame vs Providence 4.

Within 150 miles of over 25 MILLION people. But yeah, it seemed isolated when I was there over 55 years ago.

Sports teams more important than Georgetown in DC

Redskins (Commanders)
Capitals
Nationals
Wizards
University of Maryland
Orioles
DC United
Hoyas
eh, that's the same in any market, look at ours - all they have to do is have a big year or two and they'll climb the pecking order

Patriots
Jets
Giants
Yankees
Red Sox
Mets
Celtics
Knicks
Nets?
Rangers
Bruins
Islanders
Devils?
Revs
Red Bulls
NYCFC

I felt like it was in the middle of nowhere in the 80s and I felt like it was in the middle of nowhere last weekend driving up to the Marquette game. To the other poster. I had a GREAT experience, but that does not change the fact that it’s in the middle of nowhere. Calhouns story of the necessary speed to get recruits there from the airport was another reminder.

City teams have access to more NIL and wealthier boosters. That is huge in the modern era.

Mississippi State was a player when stuffing $20,000 in cash in a paper bag made them a player in recruiting. Those days are long past.

I think you make good points, but we just have more proof of concept with Marquette than Providence. Providence had a pretty long period of being not good, and their fan support is likely more tenuous than Marquette's, who has more multi-generational fans. Even when they had a losing record in the Big East under Wojo in 2019-2020, they were putting average of 15k fans in the seats and top 15 in NCAA attendance.

Well except for the national championship they are almost the same program. Yikes.

Right. I mean 30 minutes to Hartford, an hour to Boston to say nothing of Manchester and the shopping there. Don’t know if you’ve ever been to Iowa State where there is literally corn growing outside the dorms. This middle of nowhere thing is, I think, largely a northeastern fiction. Mansfield is basically an outer ring Hartford suburb today.

the UConn fans that actually went to PC but didn’t have the balls to become PC fans and root for their alma mater are outing themselves in this thread

Curious if you Are an alum? My cousin is one of those uber wealthy DC Gtown alums and his support has never waivered since he graduated almost 20 years ago and I know his group of college friends feel the same way. Just some anecdotal evidence.

Georgetown has always been +academics wise.

The institution and relatively recent fan base have drifted toward even more academia first. That's fine.

However, the drift is not one toward a rabid fan base and more toward a rabidly political school hell bent on clinging to the Harvard/Yale ethos. IMHO.

Perfect dumb post to put the final nail in the coffin on this thread.

Harvard and Yale are very good company to be in. The idea that intelligence, research, history and science are political confuses me.

Georgetown doesn't have a rabid fan base because they suck, that's their problem. Trying to be more like Harvard is not their problem.

Can we get your cousin to contribute to UConn nil??????

Part of what made Georgetown so good and popular was cultural. They were in your face and tough, just like The U in football. LA rappers were wearing their gear along with kids in Kansas. The U still has a little of that swagger but it's tougher to do in college sports now, things have changed and the culture has changed. The reality is Georgetown never really moved past their great years with Big John. They stopped putting good teams on the court and they lost all that built up cool factor that made them different a long time ago. It should be an easy place to recruit kids to and they've never really done it consistently since Big John Thompson.

Why does this board keep saying this like the years with JTIII weren’t also really good

Malik Mack and KJ Lewis I’m sure weren’t cheap coming from the portal.

They were good/solid, they got a final 4 and a swet 16 out of him. The real problem is Ronny Thompson.

It’s hard to judge other programs by how they do in the tournament (even though that’s our really high bar of success).

Georgetown was pretty consistently a top 10 team throughout the JTIII years that produced a lot of NBA talent.

But yeah after the Big East dismantled and he left everything went down the toilet.

ON BC UNANIMOUSLY BEING PICKED LAST: “No one cares. It’s the third sport on campus behind hockey and football in a pro sports town. Conte Forum is a ghost town unless Duke or North Carolina are coming in. There’s money, but they aren’t spending it on basketball.”
Need to send this to my BC grad brother in law 🤣🤣
