factor in the other defensive stats i.e. rebounds (5.8), steals (.6), and blocks (1.6) and i think whaley is the runaway favorite

I think it's closer than you think. Minaya has really come on. His block at the 25 second mark is with his off hand, because he had to. He played 40 minutes of absolutely stellar pressure D last night without fouling. Plus you need to look at BE only stats.

you dont get extra credit for using your off hand

minaya- 5.9 rebs/.7 steals/.8 blocks

just barely ahead of whaley in the first two categories by .1 each but half of whaleys bpg

You said Whaley is the runaway favorite. The stats in the 1st post show that's not the case. Also, Whaley's defensive rebounds are not that in BE play.

Announcers always talk about this kid but when I watch y’all I never notice him. Did he play well against us?

as the only big man on that list that guards other bigs that can normally shoot around 50%, whaleys 35% is more impressive than minayas 25%

You don't notice him because the person he is guarding can't get many shots off. Not sure how many of our'all games you have watched but he is talked about for a reason.

if you say so. I say with Minaya leading the league in minutes played, his defensive FG percentage is incredible.

Idk I notice Morsell, and it’s not like he stopped Martin from getting 25. But I’ll admit I haven’t watched all your games.
 
If you $uck at defense, you're not guarding the opponent's best players

Interesting stat none the less. Better than just blocks I suppose

He has been off the court for a total of 36 minutes in 9 conference games so that seems like a pretty useless stat.

That's basically a full game played without him. And there's been no dropoff in their defense (as of now it's been slightly better with him off the court). Even if the small sample size is concealing an effect, it's certainly not a large one.

He's a very good defender. But wing defenders are the least impactful defenders overall. He protects the rim a little bit and is versatile, but 1 versatile player doesn't help you as much as the value of having several, if that makes sense. A good wing defender can be somewhat avoided. And unlike say a shutdown NFL corner when you avoid them, that doesn't erase half the field, only 1/5. Locking down a wing player will only be relevant in certain matchups, unlike locking down the rim or disrupting the point of attack ballhandler.

For a wing defender to have a truly elite defensive value, they have to be disruptive (either help a ton at the rim or get in passing lanes/make steals, be part of a press, etc.)

I phrased that very poorly. Meant Minya didn’t stop Martin, and that I notice Morsell when I watch Marquette.
