Big East December '25 Thread

Steve Smith is a good color commentator(working the GT/Marq game), good move pivoting to college hoops full time after he didn't get added to the Amazon/Peacock teams once Turner lost their NBA rights.

Since I had question marks I was asking you if they were supposed to be good since you have done a projection and I was assuming you know more about the Big East than I do. I thought I saw a lot of projections that they weren't supposed to be good. What do you think? I see you have them finishing 5th in the BE in your BE projection thread. Do you think that would be good enough for Xavier to make the NCAA Tournament?

Their kenpom ranking currently is 103, which is 9th for BE teams.

Their NET rating before tonight's games is 101, which is 7th for BE teams.

So do you think they're going to make up a lot of ground and have a really good Big East season so they will make the NCAA Tournament? I'm asking a serious question about why the Creighton win over Xavier was a “bid stealing win”. Just doesn't seem so.

Losing by 41 at home to a 6-5 team will do a number to your KenPom rating.

Xavier looked decent in the games I saw, had two decent quality wins in OOC, and a respectable loss to a good Georgia team, so I didn’t expect Xavier to suck.

p.s. pretending that you “told me so” has more credibility if you actually made a prediction.

Xavier is awful, going to take another year or more for pitino to get the caliber of players needed. Maybe dad can have repole send some nil money.

I never said, “I told you so.” I was asking a legitimate question about why Creighton’s win over Xavier was a “bid stealer.” That didn’t seem to make sense.

I couldn’t find kenpom’s ranking before last night’s games. But I imagine it wasn’t close to good enough and their NET was 101, which isn’t near good enough either. Maybe they’ll have a great BE season and make up ground. I guess that’s what you’re thinking.

KenPom is going to have to change its methodology, because the opening rankings are still a huge factor in a team's rankings well into December. I don't think they get fully washed out until January. I guess that kind of made sense when someone was just looking at returning players and new recruits to project a team, but many teams turn over 50% or more of their rosters every season now, so there is going to be a lot of volatility year to year. The preseason predictions should be out of the model by November 30, even if it results in more day to day volatility for a few weeks.

His rankings do change quicker in the portal era, he confirmed he tweaked things and you can tell when comparing it to other metrics which are slower to adapt.

I saw this article this morning but decided not to post it to avoid one poster's wrath. 😀

At least Joey Brackets praises UConn.

UConn is even better than we projected heading into the season. St. John's isn't, at least not yet.....The modern Big East has officially evolved from a conference carried by Villanova to one carried by UConn.

😂 shouldn’t you be calling the ESPN writers trolls? I am not Gen X (random). I’m a millennial. And I was at the Duke-UConn game in Tampa in ‘99, went to UConn, grew up next to UConn, and have been rooting for them my entire existence. Just because I acknowledge our league is now awful doesn’t make me a troll. But god help me I do enjoy laughing at your asinine straw men takes..

The league isn't awful. It's certainly down this season and the worst out of the 5 power basketball conferences this season.
 
I’d say only two guaranteed bids is awful. I guess you just have lower standards.

I said it's a down year and the worst out of the power 5 basketball conferences. We only got three bids when we were the second rated conference in the country a few years ago so I don't really judge the strength of a conference on bids. The eye test tells me the conference is really down this season but we'll still have more than 2 bids.
