Big East December '25 Thread

Don't look now, but one of the Big East NCAAT hopefuls, Villanova, is losing at home 56-51 to DePaul with under 8 minutes. This will be a resume painful loss if results hold.

Will DePaul make the NCAAT? No.
Will DePaul finish in the top half the Big East? Really don't think so.

Will DePaul be a pain in the ass to other Big East teams? Yes
Are we going to do this all season?

When I clicked on the link it brought up a chart showing the Big East as the third highest conference and Creighton as our best team with an RPI of 60.
Credibility absent?

It is the RPI, which was used for 40+ years as a key tool in picking the tournament field.

.-.
St. John’s looked like they might be in for a dogfight against Georgetown but all of their shooters started bombing threes together (15-27). They have their holes - but they will be dangerous. Ejiofor (7) and Hopkins (6) did most of the passing.

Ed Cooley looks ready to launch another water bottle
They were undefeated before Vince had surgery including a win over Clemson who’s other two losses are Alabama and BYU.

I’d be so upset at the injury issues if I was Cooley. Think Vince is almost back though and I’m curious to see how they finish the season with him in the lineup.

Julius is skilled but can play soft at times.

And he gets into foul trouble early and often. He had 3 fouls at the 15 minute mark of the first half against St. John's.

Cooley has been struck by bad luck of the injury bug to his team this year and having Sorber declare and remain in the NBA Draft. You can see the idea he had of having twin towers of Julius Halaifonua and Thomas Sorber last year and this year. They would have been a formidable pair against any team. Halaifonua got hurt at the very beginning of the 24-25 season last year and then Sorber has his foot injury at the beginning of February 2025 only to never return. If Sorber remained healthy, even with Halaifonua's injury, Georgetown would have made the NCAAT last year because Micah Peavy was also a very good player. Cooley thought Sorber would be returning for this season and was surprised by Sorber remaining in the NBA Draft. He thought when Sorber declared for the NBA Draft that he was going simply doing it to gain feedback and that he would return back to Georgetown. Cooley got burned when Sorber remained in the NBA Draft.

The knock I have on Cooley is he should have had a Plan B and pulled another solid, didn't have to be a great, center in the transfer portal just in case. Maybe that was what Vince Iwuchukwu was supposed to be, fair enough, but when he went down with the injury it seems like Cooley never really adapted his game strategies and team style to adjust for Vince's absence.

Sorber ended up going 15th in the draft so shouldn't Cooley have been sufficiently warned that Sorber was going to stay in the draft? Or did Sorber rocket up the draft board after the combine and workouts? I thought he was projected to be in that 15 range when he declared so if that was the case then Cooley was naive for believing Sorber was coming back.

I think Cooley is a better than average coach but nothing more. Every time we have these discussions about him it makes me think that Georgetown seriously over paid to lure him to DC. They could have gotten a much better coach for $6 million a year.

he was already projected in that range, he couldn't work out during the draft process due to injury/surgery

Ah, that's right. O.K. I stand by my original thought that as soon as Sorber declared for the draft on March 27 Cooley should have been checking the portal hourly for another player. That's plenty early enough to have some good options.

That problem is solved for the future guy gets drafted and doesn’t like his pt he can go back to college and finish his eligibility.
