Big East Conference Awards (Huskies)

The coaches vote on the Big East awards. I think they're pretty well-equipped to judge who's had the biggest impact.

I think coaches get it wrong sometimes. I think coaches are busy and they don’t watch the random butler versus Xavier game on Tuesday night. They vote on these awards sometimes and think about players that had big games against their team. And that’s how much thought maybe goes into their voting.

I thought HM was reasonable.

I would have liked to have seen Chen get something. But I did look at her numbers. And she was really quiet in the big east at the beginning of the season. She had a couple of zero point games. It took her a while to get going. So, I guess I can kind of understand the snub.

Geno and Cara: Co COTY

Gotta say, I don't know about the choice for COTY. For me, it should've been solely Geno's because he went undefeated a (3rd?) year in a row. At the very least if there had to be a Co-COTY duo, I'd have thought it would be Creighton's. Was Marquette just picked to finish really low initially, and because they did better than expected, that's why she won?

Talk about reputation carrying the day for a player. Azzi is first-team all-Big East? You've got to be kidding me. I'd have had Ashlynn and KK ahead of her, and maybe Kaitlyn, too.

I know this won't sit well with many here, but that's just crazy considering how many mediocre games Azzi has played. The myth of Azzi Fudd lives on...

When you have three first teamers and the top player off the bench in the league it is hard to argue too much. My thoughts are you could put any two players on the team in with the three and they would have the exact same record. KK really had the ability to amplify the offense while bringing a level of defense no one else possessed, and the others were really good.

As far as coach of the year goes I think UConn should win every game, every year if the competition is like it was this year. Their worst recruit is likely rated higher than almost any other player in the league so there is that. A couple teams in the league were gutted last year and I think Marquette over acheived compared to other schools.

All in all it was quite a haul of awards for the Huskies.

I didn’t have Azzi anywhere near first team. And then I looked at her big east numbers. They are actually excellent. And she only had one DNP in the big east. So, I suddenly find it hard to argue against her inclusion.

Maybe they go by stats? PPG Avg: Azzi 12.8, Ash 8.3, KK 5.7. Nuf said!

Azzi seems to receive the most leeway, the least criticism, and the most praise from the fans, coaches, and the media.

Why do you think she deserves any BE recognition? What stats warranted her inclusion?
She wasn’t any where near the top 20 in the league in scoring, was 4th on her own team in Assists, 14th in the league, didn’t crack the top 15 in steals, was 6th in A/TOs behind 3 of her teammates so I see NOTHING that demonstrates KC deserved any BE recognition. That doesn’t mean KC isn’t valuable to us, as a team but she’s not elite enough across this league.

So... for people who feel that Azzi did not belong on the all big east 1st team... here is a list of the top 20 scoring averages for players in the Big East for conference only stats

Note that the GREEN is 1st team, PINK is 2nd team, and BLUE is HM - 2 players were HM that were not in the top 20 scoring for the conference.

Azzi's scoring was good enough for 13th in the league and she only beat out 2 players ahead of her in scoring - one who made 2nd team (McGuff from Butler), and one who made 3rd team (Johnson-Matthews from DePaul).

I can't speak to how or why the coaches voted the way they did, but from ONLY a PPG perspective, it's not like Azzi was named 1st team ahead a BUNCH of other "top" players in the league. I do think it's odd that the #7 scorer in league games "only" made 3rd team, but that's a question for the coaches.

I do understand that looking at Azzi in a vacuum one might not think she deserved 1st team BE honors, but given the list above, I think it's much more understandable. Also, it's NOT just scoring PPG that goes into the honors - I think Azzi's defense is top notch and it would not surprise me if her all around game vaulted her ahead of the 2 players statistically ahead of her in PPG in the league...

Shes the 4th-6th best player on the team. What award did she deserve?

Isn't that exactly how the coaches scout their opponents? Granted it is an assistant coach but they pass the information, including stats, along to the rest of the coaching staff for game planning purposes.
And I am also going to guess that the player candidates are discussed by the entire coaching staff.
Or maybe not.
