Big early season games

Both teams have gutted rosters compared to last year, only a few rotational players from last season return in both cases. The losses go deeper than the 2 stars for each. If I'm looking at last year's stats correctly, MSU lost 3 starters and UP lost ALL FIVE.
It's true - and sad to see that these teams have a much harder time reloading than the traditional powerhouses of the world. That said, the attrition and transfers at the mid-major level has been mind-boggling this year - I attempted to draft a team mostly of mids for a fantasy league and it's proven hard outside of a few teams that have been unscathed. The Maggie Doogans, Adrianna Smiths, and the Brooklyn Meyers of the world seem to be fewer and farther in between.

I've been halfway watching this game. Lots of turnovers for both teams, but especially for Portland. Montana St. looks like a team that still knows what their identity is, The Pilots look like a young team who have never played together. Rough outing. Chirrick is as much of a pest on defense as ever, seems like every time I look up she's deflecting a pass or getting a steal.

Genuine question - how big of an error would that be if someone plugged in San Diego in their GPS by accident? Are we talking an hour or several hours, including traffic?
Pretty huge - over 500 miles from San Diego to Sacramento. In fact, Sacramento is about 90 miles north of San Francisco so... it would be pretty bad. And anyone who followed their GPS from say San Jose to San Diego instead of Sacramento would need to have a very low basketball IQ LOL.

"How many blondes does it take to..." 😁

Oh damn. As my US geography knowledge isn't great, I'm never sure whether some of these California cities are suburbs of Los Angeles.

That's okay, I'm sure you can run circles around the rest of us w/ Canadian geography.

Heck, LA is so big that even the suburbs are a long way away from other parts of LA.

You're not alone. As an East coaster for all my life, I don't have many reference points, outside of movies, on the location of West coast cities. I constantly find myself assuming all of California has Los Angeles weather. 🫣

1) I wish I could say that's the case. I still can surprise myself as to how little I know.

As a former resident of Toronto, I can relate with this to an extent. Getting across Toronto is painful pretty much any time of day it seems.

Yup. Then I look at the map and see it reaches as far as Oregon!!! 😲😂

Were my eyes deceiving me in the UCLA - Oklahoma game? Betts takes (and makes) the first shot of the game from the top of the key? And brings the ball up the length of the court later in the game? And has an excellent contest against a perimeter shot, maybe more than once? It’s like Lauren has taken seriously the idea that she needs to expand her game beyond the paint for the next level. And she really did look a bit quicker than last season.

Apparently Coach Close has been telling her players that with their current skills none of them would be the first option on any team in the W. That may have motivated something in them. Kneepkens, too, who showed off some serious skills off the dribble, breaking a few ankles and getting to the rim.

It was a really competitive game, close most of the way with UCLA opening a lead whenever Beers was off the floor. Cori played her starters + Dugalic for 30 or more mins. This was apparently not a moment to develop her bench. I guess both teams, but especially UCLA, were coming off very public spankings from UConn in the tournament and had something to prove to themselves. And the fact is UCLA’s game looked more open, more aggressive than last season. I’d say hats off to both coaches for reimagining and reinvigorating their squads for the new season. Cori even started 4 guards plus Betts.

One last note: still no little Betts for this game, and no Gardner. And Kiki looked a bit slower than usual — is she coming back from offseason surgery? Leger-Walker was able to pick up the slack, though even she seemed a little slower than her peak seasons. The good news for UCLA is that Kneepkens and Dugalic looked better than they ever have. Once everyone is fully healthy this is looking to be a formidable and fired up roster.

Kiki Rice is still recovering from post-season shoulder surgery and may still have some limitations. Likewise, Timea Gardiner has not been cleared to play after her post-season surgery (but I will note that she is almost unrecognizably thinner than last year). I haven't seen any updates on Sienna Betts and her leg injury.

I thought Leger-Walker looked a bit tentative in the first half, but picked up her pace and shooting more in the second half.

Saw a post on Twitter/X by Talia I believe stating she's no longer wearing a boot, but there's still no timeline regarding when she'll play. The fact she's not in a boot sounds like a little progress to me.

Less than 1,500 attendance last night for UCLA-OU. Don’t get that. An awful lot of stars and fun players in that game. Love what Kneepkens and Leger-Walker add to the Bruins.

What I noticed was the fact that neither Beers nor Betts scored double digits, Beers played 24 minutes, and only took 7 shots, and Betts had 34 minutes with 11 shots. Beers had more rebounds in 10 less minutes. However, Betts had 4 blocks, with 7 TOs.
I guess that I was expecting a little more from the All Americans matching up.

As I had said a month ago when this thread was posted, I was looking forward to seeing the UCLA-OU game and it did not disappoint and ended the way I thought it would. Cori's team was pretty much in mid-season form and OU tried to run, run and run. As @Centerstream noted, the marquee match-up was a bit of a "thud". To me, UCLA does not know how to create enough ball movement to get the ball to Betts and enable her to score. Is this the fault of Rice or CLW? Not sure but I am not ecstatic about either being a true point guard. Kneepkens was as advertised. Every time I watch Betts, I always feel she's allowed to muscle her way to the hoop with the ball, elbowing, shouldering and body blocking the defender/defenders out of the way with nary a call against her. I would not say she has "finesse" but does have a nice touch on her shot around the rim.

OU does not really have a good half-court offense, which is what it takes to win elite match-ups now in these elite match-ups and in the NCAAT. As for UCLA, they now have a legit outside shooter in Kneepkens and a streaky CLW. I am still not sold with Kiki as their PG but this is the #2 in the country. I would put Texas 3rd. The 4th/5th spots are between SCar and LSU. I think LSU has better front court and better depth but Dawn is the better coach.

@DefenseBB I didn't consider UCLA a top team because I think that the team with a really good 6'7 player was basically a one-trick pony. I meant that if she is shut down or you can shut down the other 4 players, they wouldn't recover. Well, last night Betts didn't score much and the Bruins still beat the #6 team in the country. They might be better this season than they were last season.

I agree. The core group is clearly improved merely by swapping Kneepkens for Jones. And if Gardner can return strong they’re clearly better.

It was in Sacramento... which has ties to neither team. Coach Close made some noises about the venue being the home of a few rounds of the NCAA tournament this year and it being a trial run for that... but, that's a real stretch.

Someone paid some money for both teams to be there, and that's that. I don't know if the men's teams would have fared much better, frankly.
