Big 12 season thread ('24-'25)

Addy Brown crab dribbling for a hundred points or so versus ASU didn't translate that well to playing a team that takes pride in defense and all around game. Was sort of surprised it was this close.

I am the rare, one in a thousand, Cyclone fan that actually thinks it is okay to play defense. The majority think that being at all physical or playing tight defense is something something akin to murder. Our WBB fan base can be incredibly whiny. You'd think that Crooks was a dainty ballerina considering how our fans expect her to be defended. Basketball isn't a game of H-O-R-S-E. Not that I think the refs are good, it's just I don't think that the refs are anti-ISU.

This was a frustrating game to watch. Should have been a better watch but the constant foul calls messed with flow of game. Hope they send that crew home.
 
Not pretty but Oklahoma St. got past Texas Tech. Heard went off w/ 34 pts/13 rebounds. Half of it was from the FT line. That's a lot of trips to the charity stripe.

Basketballed out so didn't check into that game. Good for Heard, one of my fav opponent players in the league.
 
TCU was up big, West Virginia made a run, but Frogs held them off. Looks like too much Prince and Van Lith. If they win tomorrow are they looking at a #2 seed?
 
Vonleh has been a bit of a disappointment at Baylor this year I think, but my goodness she has been unstoppable today. Just killing Oklahoma St. 35 points and counting and putting all of OSU's bigs in foul trouble.

I think most Baylor fans are happy with what Vonleh has given us all year. A few tough games but easily the best post presence we’ve had in 3 years.
 
Now suddenly Baylor can't miss from 3. I think that last one sealed it. Up 7 w/ 43 seconds left.
 
Oklahoma St. has fallen apart in OT. Coach losing it, players losing, not much composure. Or execution.

Should be because of LSU 1-3 finish and the way ND staggered some. Even if they win they have to overcome ND "name" and likely committee SEC bias.

I just feel like TCU and Baylor will get dissed because the league was weaker. It's not nearly as corrupt as the football play-offs but they still want the names. Baylor should still be a "name" but they seem to want to erase that with Mulkey gone.
 
Also missed this from a few days ago. This is surprising to me since she is LDS and on an 18-month mission and I just did not envision her leaving (although she could still stay at BYU). She was the top three point shooting ace in the Big 12 as a freshman. Not sure when her mission completed, likely fall so she has time to get back into game shape for 2025.

Cyclones won their First Four game so the Big 12 is 1-0. ;)

Terrible 2nd quarter almost cost them the game but they came back to win. Continues their season long trend of winning every game they were expected to (except UNI) and losing every game in which they were not favored. I don't count the win over the Lee-less Jayhawks as a win over a "favored". That was at Hilton and, as noted, Jayhawks were Lee-less.
 
Iowa State and Utah lost today, while the better seeded Big 12 teams, Baylor, KSU and TCU rolled on. ISU did win their First Four game so Big 12 is 4-2.

WVU and OSU on tap tomorrow.
 
What a game from KSU's Poindexter, eight three-pointers made!

Wild finish and am glad for KSU (and Lee) that last little floater didn't fall. Was impressed that Lee was able to even play let alone be as effective as she was.
 
So anyone of our AZ peeps want to tell me a bit about Jada Williams? With zero history with Arizona prior to this year I saw her play once this season and she had an outstanding game.

This is me assuming the Skim teaser gif is Jada committing to ISU.

At Arizona Jada was a team leader. Heart and soul type. That might not specifically translate, of course, depending on team need.

On the court, she typically played point or point/2 guard depending who was on the floor with her. She was often the person on the court who knew where the other players were supposed to be, directing them to their spots. That said, she became visibly frustrated at times when players were not where they were supposed to be and I think at times this either affected her play or got her a brief respite on the bench.

She is a streaky shooter. Just is, it isn't really a negative as many players are. It does have 2 mild downsides - first, when she was off she was still being depended on to shoot. She was the leading scorer but other players were close. It isn't like her points average was unbelievable, in fact, I would argue that Arizona's problems were at least partly caused by a lack of a "star" go to player - although scoop has it that Jada, at least at times, thought she was the second coming of Aari. The other downside was that when she was on, some of her shots could be "outstanding" - but even if she was generally on, you just couldn't (obviously) count on every shot going in, and she would get in streaks of trying to take over, which (typically) didn't actually happen.

I liked Jada on the team a lot, but I wasn't surprised she was a team leader in departing. Absent confirming whether a reported transfer yesterday was an April Fools or for real, I think Arizona is down to 2 or 3 players plus 2 walk-ons that have scholly's. I am most unhappy.

Thanks for that response, I appreciate the info especially since signing with another Big 12 team is sort of insult on top of injury and you are being a good sport in sharing your thoughts.

It seems like a really good get for ISU but I wonder how she will actually fit in real play with a diva like Crooks wanting 20 shots a game next year. But, this is another Big 12 teams and she's from KC so she knows what she is getting into and that includes the not everyone's cup of tea coach. She went out on top without completely emptying the fuel tank.

ISU has a two year window to do something in the Crooks/Brown/Williams junior and senior seasons. It will be their best and last shot before the wheels fall off. Fennelly turns 68 this spring and speculation is he may go out with the 2026-2027 season. The juniors to be total 8 of the 13 on the roster and the 2024 and 2025 HS classes are lackluster as I expect 2026 to be. I think we will be looking at a completely empty cupboard come 2027 if Fennelly just rides the Crooks team out as a retiring coach. Every coach change now can be a mass exodus but if your entire base graduates and the recruited classes suck because kids think you are retiring than it is sort of preordained that the new coach won't have much to even try and retain.*** Of course, he wants ISU to hire his son which, unless they home run 2026 recruiting for HS and portal seems pretty unlikely.

*** And why I've sort of come to admire Iowa's Bluder retiring the way she did. She left a decent base and two good incoming recruiting classes for Jensen to work with and recruit to.
