Portugal vs Czech Republic starting..
A mistake, sorry! What has this to do with the post you tagged as a reply?
Correction: Apparently the Game vs Israel is at 6:00 AM Sunday morning, sorry!NEXT UP is Israel who was 73 - 70 loser in their first game. Israel is somewhat shorter than
Portugal. Israel has one player playing in the western hemisphere. Rinot (sp) from the
U of Toronto, Canada. Portugal FG % 44.6 Israel 35 %; Portugal 80% on F.T to 66% for
Israel. Big scorer for Israel: Karsh with 20 points (5'8"). Israel had more steals than
Portugal 15 to 12. So there appears to be quickness on both teams. I 'll give
the edge to Portugal: more USA/Canadian collegiate players, some height advantage
and, of course: INES!! Ines was the second leading scorer for Portugal, 15 points, with
Ms. Barreto #10, from Ball State, leading with 23 points. Barreto plays with
Nika Muhl's sister, Hana, at Ball State. GO HUSKY!! The game is scheduled for
8:30 AM Sunday Morning.
Me, too. I'll be very surprised if she doesn't get ~10 mins/g. Especially if Geno decides to run a pressing-transition game.I know UCONN is loaded in the front court but with her added strength and a year in the program, I find it hard to believe that she can't provide valuable minutes off the bench.
I agree, and would amend this statement to say I expect she'll earn a chance to make an impact. From what I've seen in FIBA, she looks like a woman on a mission.I commented in a thread that was touting the incoming freshmen and the impact that they will have. I posted that I hope people don't overlook Inês because she deserves a chance to make an impact (paraphrasing). I stand by that post.
I agree. My point is that with the number of guards on this team, that it appears to me from my aforementioned post about the newbies, that Inês was on the bottom looking up. I just wanted to express my opinion that the roles should be the opposite on the first day of official fall practice and then each one* will need to earn their time. And Inês deserves a fair chance.I agree, and would amend this statement to say I expect she'll earn a chance to make an impact. From what I've seen in FIBA, she looks like a woman on a mission.
I recall a press conference when Paige was about to return from injury two seasons ago, and Geno said, “Of course, she’ll have to earn her minutes just like everyone else.” Then he started laughing and crying at the same time.I agree. *Obviously I am not including Paige, Azzi, Nika and a 100% healthy Caroline...
She was the leading scorer on Portugal's U18 team last summer. I suspect that they would have found a place for her.Ines made the team because what she learned from practicing and playing at UConn last year. I believe that Ines wouldn't have made the team if she had gone to the school in Florida where she was originally going to play basketball. I hope that she has a good showing in the tournament.
All the results make it pretty simple on Tuesday. A win puts them in second place and a loss puts them in third place. Their group crosses over with Group B in the next round. Second place gets them the third place team in that group, likely Finland, otherwise Lithuania while third place gets them the second place team in that group, likely Hungary, otherwise France. Either of their likely matchups would be tricky.Final Score Serbia 77 - Portugal 59 Ines 3 points , and 3 assists in 20 minutes 13 seconds.
No one looked good in the second half for Portugal. Serbia was able to pass to the interior for layups.
Portugal .... well, there will be a next time, Tuesday.
Next Game: Tuesday 8:30 AM vs Israel.
Overall INES is #2 for Portugal in Efficiency, #1 in scoring at 12.3 ppg, and #1 in assists at 4.3 Apg.INES BETTENCOURT COMES ALIVE IN THE FOURTH QUARTER! But Israel makes
their free throws down the stretch Israel 81 Portugal 74 Ines'
stats: 19 points ( nine in the fourth , top scorer for Portugal) 7/14 for 50 % FG shooting,
5 rebounds, 6 assists, five for five from foul line and an efficienty rating of 24.
Portugal needs to be more consistent. INES makes the team BETTER!
