Now offseason is here and we had another heart breaker - not sure this forum has done this and if it has I apologize. Just organizing this poll was stunning regarding some of the near misses and incredible teams that gave us everything but fell just short of cutting nets down at Final Four. I couldn't tell you which was the best, forget ranking them. Hoping there isn't a ton of recency bias since some of those teams a little ways back had some serious talent and should be up for consideration. Anyways, thought it would be a good offseason discussion.

Broadening the scope a bit, I think that "the best UConn team that never was" might have been the one that featured Elena Della Donne as a teammate of Maya, Renee, and Tina for a few years. They might not have lost a game for the entire period that EDD and Maya played together.

.-.
17 and 18 burn me, because Pheesa and Katie Lou were the greatest to not lead their team to a title.

In '17 it was criminal for us to have to play so small, I felt so bad for Pheesa and Gabby battling giants in the post. A transfer could have fixed that if they were playing in the NIL era.

And then when we did have 6'-7" Azura in 2018, I felt like Geno should have let her cook against ND the 2nd half of that FF loss. But Geno gotta win (or lose) his way, so be it.

Some quick corrections:
2020-21 should list Christyn Williams instead of Walker
2017-18's main rotation with KLS, Williams, Phee, Nurse, Dangerfield and Stevens. Megan Walker wasn't a big contributor to that team
2016-17 didn't have Stevens (she was on the bench for a transfer year)

The 2000-2001 team was a team of basketball Hall of Famers. In the title game, we were up 49-37. We lost the second half to Notre Dame, 53-26. Probably the worst half of basketball ever played by a Geno Team. That was the game Taurasi went 1-15 and 0-11 from threes.

The "best team that never was" briefly existed in August 2008. UConn - if Elena Delle Donne stayed in Storrs - would have had her joining Maya Moore, Tina Charles, Renee Montgomery, Kalana Green, Tiffany Hayes and other very good players. Would have been an amazing team. Geno would have literally started a WNBA All-Star team

My vote was for 2017--that was Geno's best coaching job in 40+ years and the team's chemistry was off the charts. They looked a little rocky early on and turned into a juggernaut by mid year and steam rolled some very good teams. They looked like a clear step up from the rest of the country until the Mississippi State upset.

The next year they were even better on paper but I didn't think the chemistry was as solid. Napheesa/Stevens didn't work well together and I also think the top teams around the country were stronger this year. Mississippi State went undefeated in the regular season, Notre Dame nearly beat UCONN on the road in the regular season and Louisville was a powerhouse too. Notre Dame beating them was a massive upset at the time.

Going through the rest:
2025-26, they just weren't as tested and likely lose a couple regular season games if they played a tougher schedule IMO. Lost by 14 in the tournament.

2023-24, they got soundly beat early with a healthy Azzi at the start of the year and lost 6 games, I wouldn't include this team, it wasn't one of Geno's better non-winning teams. Also it was a clear moving screen too, not a phantom one.

2020-21, UCONN had a really good team this year led by Paige as a freshman. Covid year so schedule was strange. I thought they were going to win it all prior to the tournament. Arizona just soundly outplayed them, inexperience in UCONN's backcourt showed up and they couldn't find a rhythm (somewhat similar to the 2025-26 SC loss).

2010-11, definitely not the best team since they were over-reliant on Maya. Had a phenomenal season though considering how young the supporting cast was.

2007-08, similar to 2010-11, a really good team but they looked rattled in the Final Four and at various points during the season. Great record but they were much better the following season as Montgomery and Charles improved leaps and bounds.

2000-01, this team could be in the mix but they were better on paper than in reality. With both Shea/Svet healthy they were blown out by Notre Dame early on in the season and they also loss to a Tamika Catchings-less Tennessee despite both playing (Svet went down with injury late in the 2nd half). If you read The Same River Twice which documents that season, that team just didn't appear to have the same magic of the 2000 or 2002 teams.

1996-97, some similarities to this year's team. They faced a lighter schedule but mostly dominated it. Probably lose points for faltering prior to the Final Four, though losing Shea Ralph in the tournament definitely contributed to that. Similar to the 2025-26 season, the other top teams were quite strong that year so a championship win didn't feel like a guaranteed outcome entering the tournament.

1995-96, solid team, lost in OT in the Final Four. Would've been favored playing Georgia in the title game, although Georgia beat UCONN in the regular season. I don't think this team was as strong as a lot of other ones mentioned though.

Honestly this ^

-3 future WNBA MVPs + Renee Montgomery who was a 1st Team All American that year.

Filling out the rotation was Kalana Green, Tiffany Hayes, and Caroline Doty, all of whom had excellent seasons as support players.

That 2000-01 team also had Shea who was lost in the Elite 8 (I think) to a torn ACL
As I recall, Ashley Battle was injured pretty early in the season, too.

What is crazy is that on paper, that UConn team had players like Ashley Battle and Kelly Schumacher -- outside of the talent of TASS and Shea/Svet -- who had quite robust WNBA careers. Battle played 142 games across six seasons; Kelly played 222 games across nine seasons (and won a WNBA title)

the 23-24 team also had Nika who set the record for assists and who stole the ball to get the last shot denied by the phantom screen.
That was probably Geno's best job of coaching with pretty much only 7 players ( including 4 freshmen and 3 seniors and one sophomore) thru the whole tournament.

That's right Nan, Shea and Svet were the vets on that team and I really doubt they would have lost with them.
And Shea got hurt in the Sue Bird "at the buzzzer" game of the BE Champiionship. Svet was already out.

That was my first thought when I saw the title before I opened the thread. EDD at Uconn for 4 years might have started a UCLA like run of championships!
Ah, what might have been.

As for the actual choices I went 2016-2017 as that wasn't injury driven, just a tough loss that shouldn't have happened. And second for me would be the next year.

I do think that 2001 team was the best team ever assembled, but injuries derailed it before the FF. Sveta out in mid-season and Shea lost in the BE championship final before the NCAAs started.

Ugh, then there was the 1999 Sweet 16 loss to Iowa State where Shea and Svet shot a combined 5-29 🤢

you had to remind me??? I was at that game - sitting in the ND section. I took a whole lot of abuse at the end of the game :(

The 2016-2017 season will forever haunt me.

It looked like UConn was truly unstoppable. I’ll never forget win #100 against South Carolina. And then they came so close to pulling off the win against Miss State, even playing as poorly as they were. I truly believe that if they had managed to win there, they would have gone on to get a five-peat. Ugh.

Just was not meant to be. But that team could have won it all this year going away.
