Best Sandwich

I took your word for it and had their 'Gabagool' for dinner. It was excellent and the people were great.

Alfredo's Deli or Carbone's Market in torrington are my local favorite..
Claudia's Grinder Shop in Farmington make a solid grinder..
Salerno's Godfather grinder going back 20+ years ago when Alfredo worked there is still the best Italian grinder I've ever had. I probably ate that monster once a week for two years straight. Stuffed to the gills with prosciutto, prosciuttini, capicola and stuffed peppers on a Milite's loaf.

Place was never the same after Tony sold it and Alfredo left to open his own deli.

Torrington had a great lunch game back then with Salerno's, Sheik's, Carbone's, Alfredo's, and The Berkshire.

BBQ hot take: the sides are what make a place great. I've had the brisket at Franklin and I've had Rodney Scott's and, honestly, I've had BBQ out here that, to me, was basically just as good. Maybe I just don't have a refined barbecue palate.
1) I said Georgia, not anywhere. I had better BBQ in Mass at BT’s. But……
2) I don’t disagree. It was actually the fried okra side and collard greens with smoked ham hocks that I remembered best from that gas station . The chopped Brisket was good ( and I’m not a chopped brisket guy , but that’s how they do in GA. I usually want to see the slices) I don’t consider a refined palate as a barrier for determining great BBQ like other more esoteric forms of cooking. It’s obviously a simple food, and it’s either really bad or really good depending on a cook knows time and temp . If they do, and you’re at a place that doesn’t hold too long, you won’t see a huge difference.

Making great fried chicken ( for example) is way harder than great BBQ

If in the area, try Gilette Ridge for an excellent Pulled Pork and neat burger with fries. Excellent views and reasonable prices for the eats.

Avella's Italian in Middletown is really good! A little off the beaten path. They'll make any sandwich you want but their daily specials are creative and delicious!
Co-sign on Avella‘s. I usually go with the Bada Bing, but Everything on the menu is great and prices are very reasonable for what you get.

I'm with you. I could pass on ribs or brisket for the rest of my life and not feel I missed much of anything. But I have had some fantastic sides that you simply wouldn't get without going to a BBQ joint. While I guess the point of eating greens is to be healthy, cooking those weeds in lard or bacon fat makes them something special.

Agreed. Too many BBQ joints have sides that basically suck.

Thanks bud. The pic is an homage to my favorite BY poster. We are basically all filthy casuals compared to him.

Great cornbread is a highlight of any good bbq meal. Sweet and moist, buttery and firm, laced with jalapeños and more. So many variations, but when done well, they are all out of this world.

Apparently I need to check out Fusaro's next time I'm in Stamford. My go to was always Uncle's Deli but once they closed it became Corbo's or A&S

I don't know. I didn't even glance at the sides when I got the ribs and burnt ends at Joe's in KC.

A&S is alright, solid, not spectacular and they're more geared for catering orders. Corbo's over expanded. Anything from any one if their spots is hit or miss.

There was a spot in Glenbrook, not far from the community center, that had an Italian deli 20+ years ago that was very good. I've been told (by a non Italian) that the deli is still there but I have no idea if the ownership has changed as it has been a good amount of time.

Joe's doesn't do greens. I've never had their beans, but that seems about the only side they offer with potential. The others are just stuff you'd find at Dinosaur or some northern backwater like Syracuse.

Also, I'd have given the sausage a try.

Doesn't ring a bell. If one existed, I have to ask myself why I got grinders at Nick's Pizza, lol.

Anyone been to G’s in Hartford? Cheesesteaks and such. Popped up on the IG feed today, looked great

A&S is very overrated. It’s nothing special. Gaetano’s is much better.

I once ate at Primanti's in Pittsburgh while attending a Steelers/Browns game. It was fantastic. Putting the fries inside the sandwich was inspired thinking.

In SECT area;
New London - Hamilton St. Market, Sonny's Market
Groton - Bennedito's
Mystic - Pasta Fresca & Piadina
Westerly - Ritacco's Market, Reale's Grocery. Westerly Packing

You didn’t miss much, the sides are pretty uninteresting at Joes. Burnt ends were good but nothing life changing. It was BBQ.

Used to go to Zarda in Lenexa,KS and get half rack ribs short end, onion rings and beans. Always great. Before Joes and I liked it better than Gates or Bryants.

That you can’t get in CT.

Says you, that’s fine. My whole point was that there’s nothing about the burn ends at Joes that I can’t find at a million other places. There doesn’t have to be a consensus on this, it’s okay.

Yes, recommend the southwest chipotle cheesesteak. Comes with battered fried jalapenos for crunch - pretty unique topping I haven't seen anywhere else but is amazing. A little greasy but sometimes you're in the mood for an artery clogging.

Then you'd love a Pittsburgh salad.

The funny thing about Primanti's is that their fries are decent as a side. But when you put them on a sandwich with the cole slaw, all you get is a soggy, vinegary potato mess.

Shout out to the Rick Reuben sandwich at Meat & Co. within East Rock Market in New Haven. That sandwich is straight HEAT!

Nice sandwich menu. But wth is "old" american cheese?

Agreed, unless you want a sandwich with italian cold cuts — they are better at a and s. Everything else is better at Gaetanos — they are truly impressive with how amazing all their different sandwiches are (meatball, chicken cutlet, etc.).
