OT: Best Pizza in CT

Went to Zuppardi's on Saturday before catching a show at Toad's Place. We had no wait and all 3 pies were excellent. It was the first time there for the other two guys and they were blown away by how good it was. They kept eating even when full. I still say it is my favorite pizza, so consistently good.
I’ve only been once since it’s a little further from Cheshire where my in-laws live than New Haven. So when I visit, it’s usually Modern, Fuoco, Antonio’s or Sergio’s (the latter two also in Cheshire, neither anything to sneeze at) I loved it and want to go back

Not pizza but Tramonti in Thomaston was once again a great experience. My first time in the much bigger new location but still had to get reservations around a month beforehand. Complimentary mussels in red sauce, Italian meats and bruschetta, and a couple rounds of limoncello shots. Portions are still insanely large, pictures don't do it justice.

Just curious, how often have you had these in New Haven?

I live in Buffalo and I travel down to New Haven often and I always stop in at both unless I must have a Zuppardi's fresh clam pizza.

I can easily see someone going to both on any given day and rating Pepe's well ahead of Sally's.

But if you go there regularly, the rating of both should be reversed. Pepe's is the more inconsistent of the two, though Sally's is inconsistent as well.

My family thinks I'm crazy because sometimes I walk in just to see if I can recognize some of the older crew making pizza. If I see only 20-somethings making it, I turn around and go to the other. If I see the long time pizza guy at Sally's in the back, I will always choose that #1 even if Pepe has their best people there.
More than a handful. More than just the pizza goes into it. Then again I don't have the super select double secret Sally's phone number either. So I may not be worthy of judging my own tastes.

A friend of mine has been recommending this place for years now. I've never been. Anyone tried Bobby's Apizza in North Branford?
I've been once. The large is a big, hearty pie. Very tasty, but much thicker than New Haven style. I believe mozz and sausage is the pick here.

Has anyone tried "Apizza Heaven" in Middletown? It's newer, but I have seen some rave about it in particular an "off the menu" Chicken Vodka pizza that people are saying is amazeballs. Was thinking of heading over tomorrow.

LOL - Elmwood Pizza & Grinder in W. Hartford still has that old paneling PLUS an autographed poster of Oksana Baiul from her days of training in Simsbury in the '90's.
Maybe the snowbank she plowed into drunk on vodka was in front of the restaurant?
Lmao, this place is down the street from me. I got a grinder there when I moved back to CT 6 years ago. The old lady hit on me and the food was terrible. So this adds up

My former boss would always get the pizzas for office lunch parties there, there are a bazillion better options.

Have not tried it, but Ill be in Middletown in a couple weeks and I'll stop in. I did try Sicily and despite the negative reviews, I thought their pizza was excellent. Also made the best eggplant parmigiana sub I've ever had. I really liked that place for lunch, and it was busy in there. I can see why.

If I need a quick pie and don't want to break the bank I'd just get Bella Gourmet or Yannis. Nothing to write home about but does the job and affordable. Of course you can spend more and do better at the Pepes location, Harry's etc

Just curious if anyone has been to Harry's Bishops Corner lately? It used to be my go to but they sold and consistency was not good. One day a really good pie and next time not so good. Have not been back in quite some time.
Any 2025 reviews?

The best comparison I can give is a slightly thicker, bootleg version of Mr B’s in Cheshire.

The prices don’t justify the quality of za.

The Harry's in Glastonbury was really good. Not sure about WH location in 2025, but I do miss the Glastonbury one, it was one of the best in the Hartford area.

Antonio the COOK/owner needs to concentrate more on being a cook and not a showman (watch his Facebook videos). The last meal I tried there was inedible due to the amount of salt in it. I'm talking easily 5X the amount of salt than normal. This has been a common complaint of several people I know who have eaten there. Not surprising after seeing how he runs the kitchen.

And NEVER order one of the specials without knowing the prices. A relative paid $50 for lunch "special" risotto. Our neighbors who are new to the area ordered two specials. $120 for a steak and $70 for a pasta "special." I've also heard that they charge over $20 to share a plate.

Stamford Frank Pepe from Sunday night. Somehow, the tip of one slice ended up on top of the pie. This beast tasted like, and had the thickness of, Domino’s, but with a burnt bottom (as you can see from that floating little triangle on top). Final nail in the apizza expansion coffin. Sally’s Stamford is also dead to me. Back to the many local NY style pies and Riko’s/Colony.

Yep, he's shaking everyone's hand all night and talking to everyone instead of cooking but the food was great. I've yet to have a bad meal there. The specials are incredibly expensive, they don't list the specials prices but the waitress tells you them if you ask. I was looking at a wild boar ragu special and she told me it's $80. Never order the specials unless you are okay with the price and never order appetizers because they always bring you complimentary appetizers and the entrees are enormous.

My chicken parm was $32, I have a big appetite and it was three meals worth of food for me. I could see the enormous portions served in oversized pans and wooden boats being a turn off to some but I'll take it any day over a place like Materia in Litchfield which is incredibly expensive and you leave the restaurant starving.

I know it isn't for everybody but I really enjoy Colony Grill. They are planning a new one in Glastonbury. I enjoyed the Avon one for the short time it was here. Hopefully Glastonbury accepts it for what it is (good bar pizza) and doesn't require everything that Avon did. The Colony Grill plans are moving through the regulatory process in Glastonbury, converting space at Somerset Square.

Hit it up today... It's good, but not a special destination pizza. Will say their chicken cutlets and vodka sauce are outstanding, though. I'd definitely return for that.

For the remaining chefs, the second challenge was designed to pay tribute to the competition's host state of Connecticut. Though seafood is often one of the first food items that people attribute to Connecticut, Ramsay instead asked for the remaining chefs to cook perhaps Connecticut's most famous dish in the media. Name dropping famous eateries like Frank Pepe's, Sally's and Mystic Pizza, Ramsay instructed the chefs to make elevated pizzas.

One of those is unlike the others.
