As I said in the Duke 99 thread I played the Ocean course in Kiawah. Caddy said it is rated the toughest course in the country. Certainly the best course I have played. For the golfers here, which course is your favorite?

Probably Baltusrol. Our CEO was a member and invited all of us on the management team to play. Played the upper course the week after the 2000 US Amateur, so conditions were still somewhat tournament tough. I was about a 15-16 hdcp at the time and shot a 99.

The year after, played Ko'olau in Oahu, which at that time was the most difficult course in the US, with a slope of 157. It was target golf and felt like someone carved a course out of Jurassic Park. If you were off the fairway, you were in jungle. Sadly, the owners closed it in 2020 due to the pandemic and sold to real estate developers, so it no longer exists.

I was very fortunate having been in the convention industry for many years, and had the opportunity to play a lot of top courses in the US and Canada courtesy of tourism execs who wanted to show off their cities. I think at one point I'd played like 13 or 15 of Golf Digest's top 100. Also got to play St. Andrews, which, if you're really any good, might not be all that tough. But they ask that you're at least a 15 hdcp to play, and if there's weather, well, you're probably screwed as I was on that day, shooting 115. But I did par the 18th in front of a crowd.

For me probably the courses at Turning Stone Casino. 2 of these were built for Notah Begay’s tournament. The first was built for the tournament and the PGA said it was too close to the road so another was built off the casino campus.

My clear number one is Royal County Down in Northern Ireland. Started off in a foggy drizzle then the sun came out on 4th tee. It was glorious.

Other amazing courses:

Baltusrol
Bethpage Black
European Club (Ireland)
Turnberry (Scotland)
Gullane II (Scotland)
Presidio
Harbour Town

Off the top of my head, without looking at the ball rack:
Torrey Pines
TPC Sawgrass - Stadium Course
Ocean Course at Kiawah
TPC Scottsdale
Westchester Country Club
and Tiburon Black in Naples

Addendum: My wife has only played golf twice - on our honeymoon at a Bob Charles designed course at Millbrook in New Zealand, and the Ocean Course. She only plays the best places. Anyone looking for 25 year old like-new ladies clubs?

The 16th is the most intimidating par 3 I've ever played. It's crazy as it's designed already, but day I played we had wind coming across so actually had to shoot left of green into the ocean and watch it blow back.
